THR causing scoliosis

Has anyone else had to deal with scoliosis and bulging disks caused by THR ? If so has anyone seen a lawyer to address this issue?

Dr's will not redo the hip implant as it is secure but is too long.

Martha,

It would be very difficult to prove that the scoliosis and bulging disks were caused by the THR, as there are so many cases of older people who have this condition and who haven't had a FHR.  Scoliosis and degenerative disc desease runs in my family.  None have had joint replacements or any other accident that could have caused it.

Hi Martha, I suffer with my back due to bulging disk, I had 4 months off work with it, I've had my disk put back in now 3 times, and I have got to be really careful the way I bend or move, the day I was seeing the consultant for my hip, I thought I'd put my disk out again trying to get off the toilet,so reading your post this happened to you after your hip replacement, I'm just hoping my THR doesn't cause me any more problems than I've already got now, I've been waiting 5 weeks this Friday since seeing the consultant who's going to do it, I did mention at the first time I went to see him I have a history of a bad back, I'm just hoping nothing goes wrong after reading what's happened to you.

As for a solicitor you may find they will take a case on just for the money, but if you signed a consent form to go ahead and have an operation I don't think you have much chance, all I can suggest is keep going back to your doctor ,but all they say is there's nothing more we can do.

Sorry for being so glum, but if you look at the negative side there's always a positive side, good luck and keep your chin up.🤞

Hi Gray,

I have severe degenerative disc disease throughout my spine.  I was 44 when a back specialist looked at my MRI results and commented, 'if I didn't know better, I'd think that was the spine of a person in their 80's'.  Later that year after suffering with sciatica and barely able to walk, I had surgery to trim the bulging disc.

At the age of 49 I had to have a FHR.  My hip specialist was made aware of the condition of my spine.  He wasn't concerned at all.  Long story short, I'm now 8 months post FRHR and have done amazingly well.  Make sure that your doctor is aware of your pre-existing conditions prior to the surgery, and you should be fine.

Best wishes

Thanks will do, I had MRI and hip scan recently so I'm just hoping everything will be ok, on thing that's worrying me a little is I don't think I can lay flat on my back for the duration of the operation, if I have to have the spine block will that numb my back as well ?

Actually, I had an epideral and chose to stay awake during my FHR.  You will be placed on your opposite side, not on your back during the surgery.  They used a strapping mechanism (like a tight seatbelt) to keep me on my side and prevent me from rolling over during the procedure.  The spinal block numbed me from the lower ribs down.  I felt pressure in my hips only, not my lower back.

Thanks Kimberly, I've heard all different stories on this one.
