THR Right & Left 3 months apart of each other, I’m still having issues with a slight limp on right side ( waddling gait~ It’s extremely frustrating, I’m 47 yrs old, I was anticipating that having this surgery would alleviate the limp and it didn’t.
I’m interested in knowing if anyone else has struggled with the same problem.
i had mine done just over a year now and have had nothing but problems . one leg longer then the other. in more plain than before surgery . just found out a month ago i have a hardware malfunction and am waiting to see a new surgeon. off work again till this is corrected
hi I had my RTHR almost 17 weeks ago. I’m still using a stick to walk because otherwise I’m limping and my understanding is that shows my leg muscles arent strong enough to walk un aided. theres something called the trendleburg gait test ( medical test) which is where you stand on one leg and try to stand without leaning or holding onto anything. I cant do that yet so I know my muscles arent ready yet.
your limp may be due to that but if you’re worried see your dr.
and remember were all different / heal at different speeds. I know I thought I’d be walking independently by now but to me shows how bad my hip was.
anyway best wishes
try physio and exercises to strengthen muscles especially adducters on inside of legs. i had same problem despite not coming off crutches too early and these are helping, and I am almost limp free, although I have lots of other post hip op problems. best of luck.

I am 52 and had THR 8 weeks ago tomorrow and my experience has been good and was able to return to running week 4 taking it easy of course and off walking stick day 10. I attended a sports clinic physio at around week 3 and had some great discussion with them on returning to running. If you had a pronounced limp before then after the op you really need to focus on strengthening the ass muscle on the operated side as it needs to stabilise you. It does take a real concerted effort and concentration when walking . I did this and no issues but I was fit before the op and did have a slight limp that is now gone. To be honest with you having had the ops so close you may not have had time to stabilise one muscle and then the other one is weaker. I would advise going to physio to see how you can get the muscles all working together again and get the gait right.
I would say to anyone who has had a THR to use those two crutches until you are walking strongly and with a good and even gait regardless of what anyone says. You will know when you no longer need them because you will simply be able to walk perfectly normally. You can check how you are walking by watching yourself in shop windows.
Cheers Richard
Hi Keith , I absolutely agree, I wish I had waited , I had met my deductible & would have had to have had other hip replaced within 1-2 yrs so just went ahead and did it. I’ve been back to surgeon several times since , He indicates everything is fine however It’s not. I had the SUPERPATH ANTERIOR APPROACH, It’s soppose to be less invasive etc .
Thank you for taking time to read my post & for your advise .
I’m happy every worked out for you with you THR
How long ago was your surgery?
May I ask who did your problem Superpath surgery and where was it carried out Cheers, Richard
Are you familiar with this procedure ? Is was done in Boynton Beach , FL.
Thank you for taking time to respond to my post, I was thinking at first it might have been that but now I’m if its something else.
Yes I am familiar with this procedure. Cheers, Richard
I’m not sure if this will help, but I have read on other boards about concentrating on heal to toe walking to to help alleviate a limp. I was limping before my surgery and tried it. It actually helped. I was able to walk with out a limp (I was using a cane to get around). Post surgery when I caught my self starting to limp I concentrated on heel toe walking and it really helped me. At this point I am walking normal.I’m 55 and 10 weeks post op. Two surgeries in a 3 month time span is a lot to heal from. Give yourself time to heal, keep doing your exercises. Best of luck on your recovery!
