THR - need some advice

Hello,

I'm two weeks post op and up to a couple of days everything seemed to be going well with my recovery...in the last couple of days I've noticed the top of my operated leg feels very heavy and achy and there is a bit of joint pain (feels like cramp but not as severe), I am walking around using crutches and have no problems with the movement of my leg - could anyone advise if this is normal?

Many Thanks

Donna

Hey, Donna, at two weeks you are barely into the recovery of your bones and soft tissues, and you can expect all sorts of issues like you describe. If you are really concerned about any symptom, then you can always make a call to your surgeon's office for reassurance or explanation. Sounds like you are doing very well, and may that continue!

Hey Annie,

Thank you very much for your reply, I did think that would be case, will see how I get on over the next few weeks, take care.

Hey donna

I have had both my hips replaced since december. The recovery for them both has been like a rollercoaster. One week you think you are doing great then you have a bad week that you think your getting knowhere and the pain seems to be to get worse. If it is unbearable l would maybe call the hospital just to be on safe side but if your hip feels ok and the pain just feels like wound pain its maybe just where they have cut through your muscles then it might just be that. I stiĺl have off days where l get pain across my lower back or where my scars are. I am almost 8 weeks post 2nd op but l would still expect bad days.

Remember how big an op it is they have cut right through all your muscles and sawed and drilled your bone. It can take months to heal correctly and as my surgeon said to me the other day your body has to re adjust to walking diffrent and your posture is diffrent.

So my advice would be if your hip still feels the same and you are still feeling like you are recovering give it time. If the pain continues or gets worse then see about it

I am sure you will be fine.

Hi Laura,

Thank you so much for your reply, today is a better day been up and done exercises this morning and doesn't seem to be as bad as it has been over the last couple of days.

Hope your doing ok.

Take care x

I'll echo Annie and Lors. You get allsorts of weird and wonderful aches and pains. most are transient and those first few weeks are the toughest for your body. As you do more the more your body complains.

My surgeon bans any exercise bar walking so your body can concentrate of healing. At 8 weeks I still get tired but am just starting to swim and go for long walks now. I get a heavy feeling even now and the joints always feel a little stiffer than my originals! At two weeks you should still be very gentle on yourself - a bit of walking and then plenty of rest with your feet up. Be patient!!!!

It's early days yet donna, you will find you get up's and down's, the swelling may get worse before it get's better, mine did.. I get spasms, but only on a night, is that what you are feeling?

Hi welcome! sounds like you are doing fine! walk rest ice! Its early! Im at 3 weeks and a couple days im feling good and then couple days not-physical and emotional rollar coaster is the name of the game. Ive learned -be kind and gentle w urself ( i dont always actually do that ) but when i do it helps alot.Theres tendon muscle stuff going on and lots of moving around in there during a rather brutal surgery. Muscle tendon femor bone and your new hip all have to re align and get to know each other and work together! Always post here when u need Blessings and continued good louck!

Like Annir says, two weeks is really early, you have probably just overdone it a bit - so easy to do, and everyone does it.  In our minds we think we are further through the healing process than our bodies actually are.

Don't forget, you are using muscles that you probably haven't used properly for ages - it takes time to get them working right again.

Hey Donna,

Warm welcome to our friendly forum of hippies -

I agree with previous comments as well - early in recovery and using muscles that have not been used properly for a while -

so much healing needs to take place - isn;t it great that you have no problem with the movement of your leg?

Have you watched this surgery on youtube - It comes with a big warning though _ Not for the weak of stomach - After having watched it I was in awe of the (my) body and her ability to heal all the damage done -

Come back here if you have any question or concern, okay ?
