Thr now, after 13 weeks of pain and suffering with non-displaced fracture, now displaced

Fractured the femural neck of my left hip on May 14, along with jamming it up in the socket so my left leg is 1/2" shorter than the right.  After telling me I don't need surgery, attempts at physical therapy (I was in so much pain I could cry), NOW he tells me he thinks we should do surgery.  Anyone else have a similar situation?

See a different doctor! That is terrible treatment. I'm sorry you had to go through it. If in the US find another doctor now. If you live in the U.K., report him and ask for someone else. I don't know how hard that is there, but I certainly would not trust that doctor. Good luck to you...

Thank you, Peggy.

Dear Janet

That must have been so painful. Sounds as if you are getting things back on track.

Good luck Janet.

Cheers Richard

If you're in the UK, demand to be seen by a surgeon at RNOH (Stanmore or London), they are the leading experts in difficult cases like this.

Elsewhere ?  get a new surgeon / hospital.

Dear Graham

Yes they have a good reputation. I've been going backwards and forwards to there regarding my ankle revision this year but I picked a very experienced surgeon at the Southampton General Hospital called Mr Dunlop for my hip revision recently and he did an excellent job. Quite by chance he was trained by the wonderful surgeon who did my primary hip back in 1997!

Cheers Richard

Hi Janet,

Do you like this surgeon at all ?

Sometimes we do not consider the standard to get a surgery authorized by insurance ... Perhaps a non-displaced fracture would not have been approved for hip replacement surgery and not that it IS displaced, it is ..

The reason why I telling you this is that my surgeon quit - the endless filling out of forms and getting surgeries approved were taking away time in which he could have performed surgeries ,,, he also was close to retirement and opted to go early -

So what I am saying here is that you already have a surgery date, right?

If you feel comfortable with this surgeon, why not just go for it ...

please come back and let us know your decision, okay ... you are not alone -

Hi Renee:  Thank you for weighing in.  FYI I am in the United States.  I actually like the doctor very much, and I don't think there's been any impropriety in my care other than I first saw his P.A., who ignored my claims of a "pulled groin" and my short leg, so the fracture wasn't diagnosed until it was three weeks after it happened.  I went to the emergency room when I fell, and the doctor said I was "lucky" they didn't detect the surgery while I was in the hospital, because they would have done an unnecessary "Pinning" surgery.  I believe he honestly thought it was going to be okay and no one could have predicted that 13 weeks later my bones would move.

I am not against surgery, I just wish it would have been determined before enduring the last 3 months of pain and suffering and wasted time to only now be starting over with the whole process.  I have a surgery date of September 6, August 30 if someone cancels.

I appreciate your comments.  Thanks very much.  Big hug back at you!  Janet

I am happy you like and trust your surgeon --- I am so sorry for the pain and frustration you had to go through though -- Maybe this happened for a reason ... unnecessary "Pinning" surgery is also major surgery with long recovery time and then find out a year later hip replacement surgery would have been better -
