THR---on pain meds

Hey everyone....I'm in the USA....I've posted about losing height and going to Disney!

I keep thinking of questions. I'm on painkillers. You're on pain killers do they wean you off before the operation. Not sure how that's going to work. I'm going to a new doctor on Wednesday and I'm looking forward to it! I'm overweight but have lost a lot. Not sure I am where I need to be.

My doctor took me off all pain meds a week before surgery. Good luck with your surgery!

Starting a week before my THR I was told not to use any ibuprofen products or aspirin. I think it would have been ok to use acetaminophen (tylenol). Your surgeon will tell you exactly what to do and what not to do before surgery, and it varies from surgeon to surgeon. If you really need pain meds, he will prescribe something safe for you to use.

I was told to to continue taking my meds as normal and im even allowed to take them on day of surgery

I was told to reduce my weight to a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or less.

See my website for a link to a BMI Calculator.

Graham

Hi I was told to continue with my meds and even take them on the morning of the surgery.

Good luck with your surgery !

Snap i think all hospitals have different rules. Where are you getting yours done? X

Hi Sarah I got mine done in the Spire Hospital in Leeds, but was told to take the pain meds the morning of the op, also when being discharged was told I didn't need to bother wearing the TED stockings, so they went in the bin!!!!

There are so many varying rules, I'm now 12 weeks post op but still have to use a stick when out and still have pain on the outside of my thigh - thought by now I would be walking unaided and back to "normal " it's certainly taking much longer for recovery than I thought!!!!

My consultant told me that all hippys will be exactly the same in 1 year so not to compare myself with others!!!

When is your surgery Sarah and where are you getting yours done???

Anyway good luck with the surgery and recovery, look forward to reading your posts xxxxx

Congrats on how well you are doing.

My operation is on monday and it is at sunderland hospital but im having a total hip replacement and reconstruction done haha xxxx

Hope all goes well for you on Monday Sarah, I'm sure you will be glad to get it over with!!!!

Take care xxx

Thank you. I will be posting threads nearer the time with updates xxxx

I'm 12 weeks as of today!

I was told by my surgeon's assistant the same thing... "After 12 months, if you took physical therapy or didn't, you'll have an identical outcome"  Seems that really, just waiting it out would be lots easier.

The pain on the outer thigh, when I go to PT, they make me do the hardest work. I lay on my side, knees bent, bad leg on top, feet held together and do the "Clam" which has twice had me in tears. Those big muscles are really hard to get back to normal. I'll attach a photo of the "clam" and I have to raise and lower that leg for 12 minutes, holding it up for a count of 5 each time. Holy Majoly it hurts. Pain pill 1/2 hour before I go and it doesn't phase the pain. Now, both my knees are killing me. He said that's because I'm also working important muscles and tendons around the knee that also stabilizes that hip. The "Clam" and I always call it the "damn clam" - glad my therapist has a good sense of humor. He even massaged my scar with cream and showed me the exact way to helo it become less obvious.

Hi must give the "damn clam" a try!!!!!!! Just thought I'd be a lot further on with my recovery by now - damm!!!!  Another thing that is bothering me these past 2 weeks or so  is severe lower back pain, I'm not doing anything different that I am aware of, but it really does stop me from walking further!!!

Have you had anything like this??? It just seems to me to be 1 step forward and 3 back at the moment!!!!

I really need to go back to work, however, that still seems such a long way off, and of course people now think I should be completely back to normal - I wish ha ha!!!!! .......

If I had back pain? It would be from laying on my a** on the sofa watching TV all day for so long. Lower back muscles can get weak and cause pain, but I'm no pro or have any real knowledge. Maybe, you are also straining your body when you twist, sit, etc,,, and can cause nerve pain or a spasm. Yeah... we all heal at different rates and have our ups and downs. I still need my pain pills... out of my cold dead hands they'll have to take them away from me.

πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚Know what you mean - I've never sat on my fat a*** for so long it really is boring meπŸ˜•πŸ˜•πŸ˜•πŸ˜•πŸ˜• I suppose my back ache is due to posture, even though I think I've done nothing different - but hey only another 9 months to go to being "normal"  πŸ˜ƒπŸ˜ƒπŸ˜ƒπŸ˜ƒ!!!!!

Never thought I would say it, but I would really like to get going back to work, this sitting around, exercising, jigsaws, THR website work is getting monotonous.

I know what you mean Graham!!!!! I have had enough of sitting around now, but it looks like it's going to be another month or two for me ......gr!!!!!!!!

I think I'm going a bit stir crazy - every day seems to be the same😁😁😁😁

Just need to get out into the normal world again lol!!!!

Have a few weekends planned for April, but even that seems so far away, just need to get rid of this damned stick and walk properly without my back now playing up!!!!

How do you find walking with the poles you got from the camping shop???

I am wondering whether to go to a private physio just to get some advice re posture and exercises as I must be doing something wrong these past 2 weeks to get such bad backache, why it's just started now???  CaN do without it though as it stops me from walking further.

Im getting a bit tired of hearing "time and patience" is what I need - well I'm afraid to say that they are running out very fast, as I said earlier it seems to be 1 step forward and 2 back !,,,........Rant over,

Anyway hope your recovery is going well x

Not sure you would need to be weaned off before the op..maybe on the day of the op??  Well done for loosing weight..so very hard...I wasn't told to loose weight tho am 2 stone over weight for my BMI..but we know we need to and for the sake of our hips!!  i am sure you will be given lots of info.....what is odd is that after the op there seem to be many different views..on sleeping on your back mostly....and giving crutches up too..told crutches /canes/sticks are your friend not your foe.

Will look to see your future posts.

Ali

Stir crazy really sums it up.

The poles are great - they get rid of the pounding that the arms and shoulder takes.  I mainly use them for balance - not to support me.

I have aprivate physio, and she is fantastic, if you find a good one, hang onto them, thay are not easy to find.

They do seem to churn out "time & patience" for every situation, don't they.  My recovery is like yours, one step forward, and two backwards all the time.   Some days I feel great, can walk, quite fast sometimes, other days it's almost impossible to move.

Rant away Carol, I feel just like that some times.

Best wishes

Graham - πŸš€πŸ’ƒ
