I had to be there at 7 and I was first on the list. Walked into theatre at 0845 and came round at 11.30. On the ward in time for lunch. Time whilst waiting passed quickly, having group and save taken, visit from surgeon and visit from anaethetist, as well as doing paperwork. Had a GA by choice. Good luck, soon be over
Hello mark, based on my experiance last year i guess it will be around 5hrs from your arrival time. I was told to be there at 12:45pm and I went down to OR at 5;30 back in my room just before 7pm done. I hade epijural with light sedation and can recommend this as recovery is very quick and no grogginess.Best of luck
that's perfectly normal as a response, mine initially was the same. However, I will say that I am also perfectly aware of the the singular uniqueness of every person. So I took the negative things and forced myself to see them as worst case scenario.
In hindsight, I'm glad I did, as my operation (now 10 days ago) went smooth as a baby's bottom.
I'm trotting around the house, have slowly begun to take the dog for (slow) walks again, and am even starting to be able to get slightly further than 90 degrees in bending.
I do still tire easily, but I refuse to not do anything because of it. It just means doing less and resting in between the things I do.
Just keep in mind that you are you, and that you decide how to approach this. Stay positive is all I can say really. I'm happy I had this done, and will have the other done as soon as the right one is healed enough.
The benefit of no pain is something to look forward to, remember that!
For some reason my first attempt at replying has gone for moderation. I had to be there at 7, went into theatre just before 9, was first on the list. Time In between taken up by seeing nurse, surgeon, anaethetist and having large arrow marked on leg to be operated on. Woke up in recovery at 11.30 and was back on the ward in time for lunch
My first attempt at the op I arrived at 6am and at 11.30am had the op cancelled due to builders walking through the theater area (that was a Friday). Was told to go back at 5pm on the Monday evening, went down to theater around 7pm and was back on ward around 10.30pm.
I have to say I was more worried about after the operation than the operation itself as my thinking is that my consultant has performed this operation thousands of times and I was in good hands. We all have our down days but I can honestly say that the pain and moveing around after the operation was much easier to deal with than I had imagined (I think we all imagine the worse cast senario).
possibly because the negative stuff tends to be at the front of your mind before the op and tends to dominate the forum as we all have questions about the crap bits. BUT, many people have had this op and found it immediately eases the pain. You will have pain after surgery but its different to the pain you have now. instead of the endless grating, deep ache you have now, you will have a healthier, healing pain plus the knowledge that eventually, you will be your old self. Im almost 3 weeks post op and it has been tough, there is no point denying it, but i know that eventually the discomfort i have now will ease and ill be able to walk normally again. Use the negative posts (together with the positives) as an archive for your own recovery but dont dwell on them too much now.
as for op time, it varies a lot but i was in surgery by 10 and back on the ward by 12. Go for a spinal with sedation if you have the choice. Ive had both and the spinal was a breeze compared to GA.
Hi Mark, My right Hip was replaced last saturday, and now, just a week later I am tending to use the walking stick on the right side to support the left leg, so my weak leg has now become my strong leg, I am left sided, and the left hip is giving pains now, glad I had the right one done first, its all Ok the only thing is the toilet riser I ffound one oline that is a good substitute for the one that they give you if you cannot fit in it, just message me if you need the details, it arrived the next day, and it is still difficult to go to toilet, but possible, it has worked three times now so I am getting used to it. Incontanance products, google that...
It is all new to me and I am healing up fast, dressing changed for the last time tommorrow, I had glue and steri strips no stitches or staples, and I can walk on two crutches now about 3/4 mile say to the shops and back with a backpack for shopping, soall going to plan. Yes it is sore after the operation but that fades and I was home in 3 days, I sleep fine on my back with a wedge of pillows behind me, and just taking it easy for the next two months waiting for my left one to get done.
Looking forward to hearing more form your experiences here in days to come.
You will be fine and not having it done for me at 54 was not really an option and waiting would have wasted both of my legs away, however,
still being in good shape has helped I am sure.
Kindest regards and wishing you a speedy pain free recovery.
I had to be at the hospital at 7.30 am. Saw a nurse who sorted out compression socks, physio who showed me how to get on and off bed, surgeon very briefly and anaesthetist to discuss level of sedation etc. I was second on the list of my surgeon and ended up being taken down to the theatre area at 11.30am. So it was quite a long wait - I was tired and had a lie down and tried to go to sleep!
I was nervous about having just an epidural as I had had a general the previous time. I was awake the whole time. I felt sick and cold at first but anti sickness injection worked quickly as did a warm blanket! I shouldn't have been nervous as it all went ok and at about half past one I was drinking tea in the recovery room whereas the peson who had had a general before me was still groggy.
i was more anxious about having my left THR than having a brain tumour removed 2 years ago!
i went in at 7am (Bournemouth Hospital) and the surgeon and anaesethist came to talk to me. I explained why I was nervous (about the nerve block and sedation). I was 2nd in the list and was due to go down at 9.30. There was a delay abd I walked down at 10.35. The theatre staff do their stuff and apart from the anaeshetic(can't spell) I didin't know anything that happened. Not sure what time I was in recovery, but I was on the ward at 3pm.
I think the reason it appears that there are negative posts is because the hospital Doctors etc don't tell you about things that may happen once home.
i am in my mid 40's and tomorrow it will be 7weeks since op. Everything is settling down and am pain free! 😀 apart from a bit of puffiness and tenderness in my left ankle and foot.
i am so pleased to have found this forum as I realise my after 'symptoms' are not unusual. It is a pity the hospital don't tell you this.
Hope all goes well tomorrow. Good luck and let me know how you are.
Hi Ian. you sound like you are doing really well in a short space of time. I had a toilet seat riser and thought they were a universal fit. 6 weeks later and now taken off! Have got 3 grabbers, a sock aid and the trusty shoehorn. Don't know what I would have done without them.
I am left handed too and sleep usually on left (operated side). At long last can sleep on that side, but not for long as still a bit sore. I think I started to sleep on right side at week 4, as couldn't bear the discomfort in my heels.
Do you know when you will have the other hip done? I have a horrible feeling that I will develop arthirits in my right hip and have to have that one done too. So I need to see what I can do to keep that one going.
I've had both mine done. Had to be at the hospital for 7am and was taken down at 11.30 first time and 1030 second time. It sounds like a long wait but to be honest you are constantly talking to nurses, doctors etc. Think of it like a train ride, just sit back and enjoy the view, let them do the hard work ☺
I was pretty much told to listen to my body. And yes, there were some rules set regarding stairs, sleeping on the side with a pillow and so on, but for the bending, my doctor simply stated that I should see how it goes. 90 is the rule, but if you can go slightly beyond without any pain, that's okay. No tension allowed. And the first 5 days, I couldn't. After that I suddenly notiiced that bending forward while sitting on the bed, I could reach my foot. Now, at 10 days, I can put a sock on without aids.
I just keep exploring the boundaries of what's possible, while staying within reason given the operation.
I had my Left hip replaced 4 weeks tomorrow and already up and about on no crutches around the house and only one when outside. Yes Its a bit nerve racking the night before but it will soon be over and you will be on the mend and that awful pain gone. I had to be at the hospital for 11am and was down in surgery by 12.30. Don't think they like to keep you hanging around too long. Its a few days of discomfort but then you soon feel the benefits. I am one of the POSITIVE ONES!! Take care and let us 'Hippies' know how you go.
I had to be at ward for 7.30, and was told i was first on list, others were there but they were all knee ops.
my surgery was booked for 8:30-9:00, but everything seemed fairly relaxed and unhurried, I went to theatre at 8:45, and spent time being prepped for epidural, with was a bit harder than expected as the Anaesthetist said i had some arthritis in my spine that made it difficult.
