Three years ago I had a sudden acute urticarial attack. Antihistamines didn't work but prednisolone gave immediate control. The dosage was 20 mg per day reducing to 5 mg slowly. The only side effect was the thinning of my skin, which I can live with. Recurrent attacks are easily controlled with 10 mg per day if started quickly. At the start I got mild hallucinations but they quickly disappeared.

Used with discretion under the control of my G.P. it is the only drug giving me a comfortable life.

Hi

Its always good to hear when someone else has what you have been diagnosed with. I have just recently got chronic utracaria and its unbearable. The doctors dont know why its just errupted out of the blue. I tried different antihistamines which had no effect whatsoever and now they are trying me on predisolone for a two week course. Can you tell me your experiences with this drug. Did it work for you and how quickly did you see the benefits from taking the drug. The worst time for me is night when i just get hot and extremely itchy and cant sleep, its so uncomfortable. Any suggestions what i can do to help at night to ease this. Did you have any side effects with this drug also. Now that youve had urticaria do you find it sometimes comes back for no reason, and would that be something i have to look out for.

Thanks for putting your experience online, it helps people realise that thery are not alone!!!!

Hi,

I realise it is some time now since you were diagnosed with chronic utracaria - I have just been diagnosed with it and I'm finding it unbearable too. No antihistamine's work. I have had blood tests but nothing has shown up. My eyes have completely swollen up too now on top of the intense itching day and night. Today my Dr has prescribed me Prednisolone and I am desperately hoping it will work.

I would be so grateful to hear how you are now, how you have got on with the steroids and whether you still need to take them from time to time.

I feel so alone with this conidition and it is so upsetting. It was such a relief to find your message on here.

Any tips or advice would be so welcome.

Thank you!

Hi, my 10 year old daughter is just recovering from a bout of chronic urticaria but with edema and joint pain. It's been 3 weeks for the poor girl. Antihistamines did not touch it and initial steroid doses were too short duration so had no effect. It was only when she went on to 40 mg a day that the symptoms subsided. Were tailing off the steroids now after a week and hope they have done the trick. Unfortunately the side effects for her have been very bad nausea, tummy pain and headaches. Re the underlying problem - have all the tests to rule out SLE etc and allergies. At present docs are saying they don't know he cause but likely to be autoimmune not an allergy. Re symptoms, we have found oat baths really cut down the itching for a few hours. Porridge oats work best!

Hi I started with chronic urticaria 18 months ago this went initially from the top of my body to the bottom after 12 months. Yet again anti histamines etc did not work just been put on prednisolone for a trail period of a week to see what happens first day today and already I feel better. Good to read all the comments I will let you know
