Hi Jess,
Sorry to hear you are suffering from this.
I have something very similar. My GP eventually referred me to a gastroenterologist, who eventually arranged for me to have a capsule fixed in my oesophagus by endoscopy (with sedation), which stayed there for about 48 hours before detaching and exiting via the digestive system. It is called a BRAVO acidity monitoring test. It measures any acid coming up into the oesophagus, and WHEN that is happening.
Previous tests had not detected what this test found, which was that I have really significant acid reflux up into the oesophagus AFTER meals, called post prandial reflux.
I absolutely identify with what you say about avoiding eating out. I also find the problem with my voice/throat very difficult. At it's worst my voice will suddenly "lock up" and I am reduced to a squeaky voice for awhile. It also feels horrible! I also have alot more mucus in my throat after eating, sort of like a catarrh, which I have to "clear".
If you have a good relationship with your GP it is worth doing your "homework" to try to find a specialist that you would like to be referred to, and whether they have access to the BRAVO test, as not all centres do it. On the other hand some doctors get a bit annoyed if one asks for a specific test, so you could say, "Do you think this procedure might be helpful?" rather than sort of demanding it!
I suspect you will just have to accept a general referral for assessment of your condition initially, rather than your GP being able to ask a consultant if they would do a specific test at first.
The way this problem is effecting you I suspect you could be seen by either a gastroenterologist, OR an ENT consultant, but one who has a special interest in ENT issues related to acid reflux type problems.
What area do you live in, in terms of possible suggestions, if that might be helpful?
Are you already on any medication for this? Some doctors would automatically put you on a one to three month trial on a medication to try to reduce the acidity of any reflux coming up after food. Another possibility would be to try gaviscon advance after every meals to see if that helps.
Anyway, just some thoughts, which I hope will be helpful.
Best wishes. Nigel
