Glad to have found this thread! I have been having this same pain in my arch for a few months now (was working ten+hour days standing on a cement floor) and so much exacerbates the pain and swelling, especially working out. One other thing I have found myself having is charlie horse/muscle spasms in the muscle/tendon running from the big toe to the heel...sometimes so, so bad that I can not undo them. What I have found that worked for myself is wearing Dansko shoes--great arch support while at the same time taking the weight bearing off the arch by supporting other parts of the foot. I had thought maybe my arch was collapsing, for lack of any other ideas as I have not yet been to a doctor for it. However, some shoes with good arch support caused more pain rather than helping. So I just googled my symptoms and this thread came up about fifth. Very helpful, Kyle's info as well, so will work to that end. I also believe that I have a neuroma on the same foot, and between the last two toes. Am I reading correctly that your two issues are also on the same foot?
Very interested to follow this thread and see if this is what I also have. Plantar fasciitis did not seem to effectively describe or encompass the discomfort I have been feeling as that pain truly begins at the front of the heel and progresses up into the big toe, for me.
I'm glad unfortunately to have found this thread(sucks to hear so many ppl in pain). I have been dealing with very very similar problems and doctors and specialists have not give an answer at all yet. I've been to the emergency room a few times, urgent care and primary doctor many many times since this started April 2016. I've been to pediatrist, orthopedic surgeon, neurologists, pain clinic... ER dismissed it as a sprained ankle. Primary doc took some blood work and saw elevated uric acid levels and was treated for gout with no relief. Went to orthopedic and they said it's probably a Nortons neuroma and was treated same day with alcohol/Novacaine shots. The initial injection definitely hit a part of my foot that was in severe pain. It helped for a day or 2 but still had severe pain. I had an ultrasound test to check blood flow to legs and found the leg w. Foot pain has 80% blood flow compared to my arms due to mild peripheral arterial disease. Cardiovascular surgeon said this wasn't the cause of foot pain and swelling. I've had pretty bad pitting edema in my ankles and shins since this started.
The pain is so unbelievably terrible, it feels like having holes drilled into bottom of foot and nerves and tendons being pulled on and torn. It sort of feels like chewing on frozen tin foil on metal filling's and broken teeth, but in different parts of my foot instead of the mouth. Mainly the middle of my foot, between big toe and one next to it. Then also between middle toe and the smaller toe next to that, deep inside my foot. Then also have swelling and severe pain on inside of ankle and arch of my foot.
I have been on Norco 10/325 for a few months and have to take large doses to be able to force myself through a day of work. Doctors say they feel uncomfortable prescribing anything stronger and there are no more options. The pain is a constant aching throbbing pain with pressure between toe bones in middle of my foot. Then have these horrible bursts of what feel like spasms of the worst pain imaginable. After a few days on my feet my ankle feels sprained and next morning feels like my foot has been smashed flat with a sledge hammer making it IMPOSSIBLE to walk or even crawl to the bathroom. This lasts a day or 2 then the cycle repeats.
Next week I have and emg test to see if there's problems with peripheral nerves or base nerves. The pain clinic has said the treatment will most likely be shots in the spine, where I have heard many ppl get releif from anywhere from a few days to a month, with the risk of being paralyzed.
So far 3 xrays, an mri, and ultrasound come up with nothing. Meds I've tried are colchacine and high levels of prednisone (for gout) several nsaids, neurontin, lyrica (no help) tramadol (worthless) valium for muscle spasms (helped sleep through the night) Norco (has helped the most to fight through the pain, sharp pain becomes dull for first few days on feet, then have to take higher doses as pain increases) have no idea what it is or why this started overnight a few months back.
Sorry for the long read, desperately looking for answers.
Interesting information and so insightful. I had fibromyalgia and healed from most of my pain with a natural supplement. But I still have pain in my feet and constant popping. I think mine is related to all the meds they gave me while they were "treating" my disease. I'm happily not on any meds anymore just trying to resolve this recurring foot pain. Thanks again for the information you posted 😊
I recently quit a job that I had been on since the end of May (this year), sadly it was a very physical job which entailed me standing on concrete all day. Sometimes even standing in one place for an hour or longer. Fast forward to present time and I have been dealing with severe pain in the arch of both feet. It is better some days, bad others. I blame the shoes I was wearing along with the fact of working on concrete itself. Most days when I get up first thing in the morning it is unbearable pain, yet as the day moves on, the pain does subside. I have not seen a doctor about it, mainly becasue of the costs (even with having insurance). I do stretching exercises, soak feet in epson salt, and try to keep this up on a regular basis. I have not tried using any inserts in my shoes or buying orthotic shoes. Just stumbled on this page (like so many others did) by searching out arch foot pain. I am trying to maintain an active lifestyle, even though I am no longer working, but if I do re-enter the job force in the future, will most likely return back to a desk job. Of course at my age, just finding work seems to be an obstacle all its own. Good luck everyone. Thanks for letting me vent.
Have you found a solution to your foot pain. I have something that sounds similar. I'm not a runner and do not spend long amounts of time on my feet. I'm 44 years old and have never had an issue with my feet at all. One day I woke up to the excruciating pain on the bottom of my foot. Sometimes there is also pain on the top outer flat area. It hurts mostly when on solid ground barefoot but does also hurt with supported arch in shoes. It's frustrating. I had an exray that showed nothing. Tried icing- no help. I've done the rolling of ball on foot bottom- just hurts more. Hurts when I flex toes inward and twisting to the side on the top and the bottom hurts when pulling toes up. Sometimes. It's very sporadic. I'd love to know if there's a light at the end of the tunnel. It's been about three months at least for me. Possibly more.
Hello im a girl who has been expierncing the same kind of pain he has^^ I noticed you asked him if wearing heels made the pain any better. That happened to me i couldnt even walk one night because it hurt so much and my mother told me to walk on my tippy toe and it helped. . I decided to see if wearing heels gave the same effect. And it did! In fact the pain went away completely. She doesnt believe me and i was wondering if you knew why that was??
Yes I did actually. I'm studying holistic medicine and found that supplementing certain minerals helps alleviate these symptoms. Helps the body heal so that the problem goes away naturally. m.me/crissy0333
I too was diagnosed with Morton's Neuroma on my left foot.
The chiropractor and podiatrist said shots or even surgery could be the worst case scenario.
That would entail some 6 weeks recovery time which I cannot afford to do.
Lately I woke up with terrible pain down my entire left leg and butt cheek. It's sensitive to the touch even. The pain in my left arch is just ridiculous to say the least.
Not sure if you are both having issues but I would like to tell you about what helped me. I just came across your thread. I was taking a dance class and suddenly felt a stabbing pain in the arch of my foot several years ago. The foot and ankle specialist first had me stay off it and it continued to have pain where I could barely stand on it. This went on for over a year. The doctor suggested I do a nerve block up by my ankle on my leg to block the pain in my arch. He then suggested massage to bring the blood flow back to the area to allow it to heal. He also gave me a brace that held my foot in a right angle to sleep in. Between the therapist doing the massage and my husband massaging it every single night after 1 month I had significant improvement and after 2 months I barely noticed it and by the 3rd month no pain at all. It has been pain free in my arch ever since. I wish I could say the same for other issues in my foot as I recently went thru surgery for those things but my arch stays pain free. I know it sounds simple and I was willing to try anything nonsurgical and I was sceptical when he said the nerve block allows your foot to relax so it can get better blood flow but low and behold it worked.
I read some really great reply's on here (I have a similar problem, which led me onto this thread). One thing that I've found is that usually there is an issue upstream or downstream of the area where you're sufferering. As this is in the base of your foot a couple of questions to consider.
1 have you any tight spots in you calves, hamstrings, glutes or lower back? Basically in your posterior chain.
2 if you have, have you had any tissue therapy? By this I mean trigger point release or checked to see that your hips are inline and your pelvis is not out.
3 apart from the toe raises are you doing any other mobility work?
Let me know, i found my right hip was rotated forward which then linked into creating tight spots in my right outer flute, hamstring, calf then into my plantar fascia.. I had to have the hip sorted by a chiro, then do mobilty exercises and have some trigger point release especially in my calves and glutes, but it cured the pain in my foot.
The fascia is all connected so often a problem in one area is created by the actual issue being in another area.
I had back issues and tightness in my planters for ten years that all stemmed from this.
Something to consider. Anyway you may of sorted it out. If you have I'd be interested to know what it was and how you got on.
My dad had 'fallen arches' and the only way he could wear any shoe was to have high arch supports. I'm somewhat sensitive to that as well. My favorite shoes are those with the memory foam so it forms to your foot. I like Sketchers....they're coming out with bigger selection now, not just the old fashioned gym shoe.
Sounds very much like accessory navicular to me. I had this in both feet and am currently recovering from surgery on my left foot. Right foot was done 4 years ago and no trouble with it since. Are you in the U.K. Or USA? I am happiest bare foot or in flip flops as the shoes do not rub on the sides of your feet making the pain worse. All the best with your recovery.
Three things they might resolve your issue: check your blood sugar level, cholesterol and check how much you're drinking water. fix this and trust me you will be fine within few days. but you need to keep up with a healthy diet regarding sugar, cholesterol and water. many people feel a lot better after they took this diet very seriously. another doctor added the sleeping "diet" that you have to sleep before 11pm or so. resolved my issue now, and I hope it will resolve your issue too.
Hi Anabella, I would love to find out who your message therapist is and osteopath practitioner is. I also live in Ottawa, Ontario Canada and am having a terrible time with arch swelling, pinching, aching pain in my arch for 15 months. It all started with a lapidus bunionectomy. I believe my tendon has been comprimised somehow. Anyway after reading this thread I felt like I finally have found people that understand what I am going through! Then I read that you are from Ottawa and that was terrific. If you dont mind letting me know. That is if you are still on here! Hope you are doing well! Tx
Hi Billstein22 I sure hope that if you get this message that you have found relief! I am also struggling with arch pain for 15 months now after a lapidus bunionectomy. I have swelling and walking is killing me. Icing and not walking are the only times Im not in pain. MRI shows nothing. Doctors dont know what it is. I totally feel for you and understand your desperateness! Please give us an update!
Hi sam33700-- I found this thread when researching for a pain I got in the arch of my foot. I'm also a girl, and it helped my pain when I would walk on my tip toes. Did you ever get a diagnosis? My doctor thinks it's plantar fasciitis but it doesn't really seem to fit the symptoms very well. Thanks for any follow up you have!
I suffered from PF for years until I began wearing Easy Spirit Romy gym shoes which were recommended to me by several nurses at a hospital at which I worked.
I began getting slight arch pain about a month ago, but nothing terrible. Three weeks ago, I bent my foot when getting out of the bathtub and I felt a pop and the inside of my arch turned purple and hurt like heck. I went to a podiatrist two days later and he stated I had either torn or ruptured my fascia. He gave me an air cast boot which went up to my knee and told me to wear it for 6 weeks and not to take it off any sooner. I could not walk in this boot and it made my legs black and blue and caused a rash. I went to another podiatrist six days later and he gave me a short boot which has worked out well for the injured foot, but from it being higher than my other shoe, my right foot is hurting worse than my left from overcompensating. I don't feel this pain in my arches are PF. I have little nodules in my fascia and I believe these are fibromas. I am using Advil oral, Voltaren gel, icing, and putting my feet up several times a day. A third podiatrist told me I did not have to wear the boot for six weeks and she taped both feet with some type of elastic bandage. It really gives my feet support, but I can't wear them all day. I do feel better with the boot on my left foot, but it only causes more pain on my right foot. I am scheduled for ultrasounds in about a week. From what I understand, it is a special ultrasound that can only be done by a radiologist. For those who have had ultasounds, were they done by a radiologist? I can't believe that only a month ago, I was walking around a mall for two hours with just a slight bit of discomfort.
Has anyone had foot numbness with this issue? I had an NCS/EMG test done that showed mild neuropathy in the tibial nerve at the ankle and chronic neurological findings for the abductor hallucis muscle. I have been diagnosed with Morton's Foot and Neuromas, but no one has addressed this muscle. I have an appointment with a new podiatrist in 2 weeks for an evaluation. My leg muscles are starting to suffer from this afflication, whatever it is and I am just looking for an answer.
