Hi hippies,
Well, ten weeks post op, and compared to many of you an amazinly trouble free journey so far!
Driving and baths and putting on own sox are now a breeze. Enjoying walking esp with my Leki poles......
Knickers and jeans on standing up, or kneeling and re-standing unaided, I'm still working on and winning slowly . Stairs up and down caryring two glasses of wine likewise.
BUT
Shoe lace undone in park yesterday, and I couldn't easily bend down low to re tie it. Had to bend from waist and then only did it with difficultly. Cross, I can't bend low.
Any advice on exercises, etc, or do I just need to give it time?

Hi Mic,
Could you touch your toes before the op bending from the waist? If so, give it time. If not, you will have to practise slightly bending your knee whilst bending from the waist, or finding something to put your foot on, i.e. stool or bench and try bending that way. Failing that buy some slip on shoes or ones with velcro!

Bloody computer!
Hi Mic.
13 weeks post op & tied my own shoe lace on operated leg for first time on Friday & boy did it hurt!
I don't see how it can be done without breaking the 90 degree rule. I shall let my other half continue to do it & wear things without laces when he isn't around.
Time Mic, I'm sure is the answer.
My consultant gave me 2 exercises to do.
Lying flat, pull knee up to chest and hold gently for about 10 secs. Release and repeat.
Lying flat bring foot of operated side to knee of unoperated side, keeping knee of operated side as flat as you can to bed. Like the number 4.
Has helped me.
Good luck, lovely to hear from you again

Hi Barbara
I was amazed to read this, they are 2 things my physio said I should never do again!
Are you in the UK? Did you have anterior or posterior? How far post op are you?
I really hope I can do it again. Eventually.x
I'm posterior and 9 weeks.
I was surprised my consultant said this. He lifted all restrictions at my 7 week check
He also said swimming breast stroke ok whereas Physio said never again.
I have been doing these exercises and it does give a nice stretch, and eases the stiffness.
I'm in the UK. He did say I should never ski or ride a horse! More to do with risk of falling
I do think there is conflicting advice fr specialists and physios. But think we have to trust whoever we are under, as they are the ones that did the op and can see the X-rays
Ta...will try this! Figure r four times on each side...
Also yes...need to give it all time

i daren't do anything I've been told not to at the moment cos I'm going on holiday soon. Don't want to risk any dislocation! I don't have another check up til July but I will ask him if I still have to stick to these restrictions.
I was also told no great stroke & I can't do anything else. Not about to start skiing or horse riding at my age anyway!
hi again,
Enjoy the holiday!
the one restriction i was strongly advised on was bungie jumping, makes sense with hip joint, so recommend you do not do that!

Damn! Just what I was planning to do......not! I'll stick to less scary things.
Looking forward to setting off the alarm at Heathrow with my hip!
Hi mic you can get shoe laces that are stretchy.and you can leave them tied and just slip the foot into the shoe.no need to tie it again.
I don't blame you. The last thing you need is a dislocation. I'm going on holiday at the end of June. Do let me know if alarm goes off for you!!
Sunshine, good food, wine, swimming and beach walks....no restrictions there!
Bungee jumping....I don't think so. Never ridden a horse in my life, only a donkey and wouldn't know what to do with a pair of skis!
Best
Barbara
Hi Ginger,
Thanks, and yet,
i want to go back to normal - laces are fine, its just me being stupid at present as not bending easily! back to the gym....
Take care
