Time Between Both THR...šŸ¤”

Hiya Guys

As the title says, was just wondering what time people had between having both THR.
Now I know we’re all different, I’ve just had my RTHR and my left will need looking at some time. I’m hoping I can get a year ish between op’s, but I guess I will have to see.

So what’s the time gap, some of you have had between op’s…

My recovery is doing well at the moment, only 4 weeks yesterday for my THR. Getting 3 to 4 walks in a day and keep up on the exercises. :+1:

I just had to get back to work quickly and I only waited 9 weeks between operations so I had three months off in all I had to convince the surgeon I would be OK and I made a really great recovery on the first one that it was allowed, and now I am fine but the left was my strong side and needed doing first really I was given the choice and that was a mistake, but OK now and getting used to less activities and enjoying life again.

i had my left hip replaced three years ago and was told that the other would need doing in the future .
it has become more and more painful and i am seeing my consultant on monday for his opinion
the xray shows bone on bone so hopefully the wait wont be too long
good luck

Hi Pete
I had my right hip replaced 6th August and my consultant is talking of replacing the left January/February time .
I’m 3 months in and my left hip is definitely grating more as I’ve put pressure on it as I’m still limping pretty badly with my right.
All the best stay safe Lynnex

Hi Pete,

I had my right hip replaced in July this year, my left is booked for later this month.

I had my rthr done mid January this year and my lthr done end of July. I had the superpath method done for both so that probably makes a bit of difference. They said I could’ve had the second one in as little as two to three months after the first but that I’d probably want to wait longer to give myself a break. I’ve found the 7 month gap to be about right. I was left with a leg length difference after the first op so wanted the second one doing as soon as I could as it was causing me issues with my recovery as I felt I couldn’t walk properly with the difference in length. Luckily the difference was sorted with the second op. I’m now just over 3 months after the second op and my hips are feeling pretty good. Good luck whatever you decide.

I had my left hip replaced in August of 2017 and my right in April of this year.

Hello there !
I’m just over 2 weeks post op on the left hip. Staples came out 4 days ago, physical therapy started last Wednesday. around the house, I walk unassisted, but I take the walker if I need to be outside…just in case. I also have a cane, and that is taking a bit getting used to. I should be back to work sometime in Jan 2019, Feb the latest. Will be keeping an eye on the right hip as I have no issues with it so far.

Hi

Following my surgeons advice I opted for a bilateral hip replacement. Both done at the same time, the advantage being one operation and one period of recovery. I am now almost six weeks post op and dong fine. Walking ok without crutches, the only issue being that I am still having problems sleeping. Walked 3 miles last Wednesday and hoping to do 5 miles on Monday. Will be tired afterwards and need of a sleep! I am 67 by the way , and would definitely recommend bilateral if you need both hips doing.

I had TLHR January 22nd of this year and TRHR September 7th of this year. I did not want to deal with the pain any longer and my right hip started to lock and my right leg was shorter than left. As long as I was in good condition to have the surgery and I am thankful at 62 there was nothing to keep me from having it done. I am still limping slightly and I went to the mall and did great but standing still started my right knee to hurt. My surgeon told me to give it 3 months and I would be walking better. It is getting better each day just taking my time and not over doing it. I hope you are doing good and soon you will have the other hip replaced.

Both were done this year and exactly 3 months apart. I had the most painful one done first and the worst one second. At 3 months the first, (left) was fine and ready for anything. The second (right) is taking longer to progress. My right leg was lengthened about 1/2" so, its taking the tendons and ligaments longer to stretch. They won’t do both at once where I live. I’m just getting back into surfing. Riding bike is the easiest to do. My longest walks are 4 miles for now. Myself and others I know all had a longer recovery on the second one so, if you seem to be doing worse on the second one don’t fret it. Good luck… I’m 58 by the way and fit.

May 31st , left hip and September 6, right hip.

So pleased you’re doing well, Pete. I may need my left hip doing at some point and, like you, I’m hoping it’ll last quite a bit longer. It doesn’t really give me much grief at the moment so there is a chance it may settle down now that the right one is dealt with. Maybe you’ll get lucky too? I do know one or two people who had both done at once. Having been through one recovery I wouldn’t have wanted to have both legs useless for a few weeks but they are perfectly happy and say it was OK. If you look at this site you will find people who have had the second one done after just a few months and others who have waited years. I don’t think there is a ā€œset timeā€ that is ideal. It’s an individual thing. I would just take the advice of your surgeon.
