Time to change

I've been on citalopram again now for coming up to 6 months altogether. 2nd time on them. first time they were great until I felt they pooped out on me. this whole time I haven't had any improvement in anxiety and the depression keeps coming back. I have recently upped to 40mg. the longest i was on a dose was 18 weeks on 30mg and barely any improvements whatsoever. I'm fed up of being anxious and depressed and feeling like i have been hit by a trick every day. it's like the worst hangover the whole time I've been on them. headaches brain fog palpitations weakness shakes all over body pain. it's been terrible. I thought they might work a second time but I don't think I've seen any improvements since being on them at all. terrified to change again so don't know what to do anymore. has anyone been on the meds a second time and it didn't work the same? thanks guys

Hi,
I haven’t been on a medicine twice before but I have had many med changes since I started. Citalopram was the first ssri I was ever given and honestly I felt like I was just taking a sugar pill..no improvements at all. Not even on the highest dosage. Changing meds is a scary thought especially when you are feeling so bad but if citalopram is not working for you then changing can’t be worse than how you feel now right? Always follow your Drs advice! I’ve had the most luck with paroxetine (Paxil) and Sertraline (Zoloft) Take care!

hey thank you for your response. was it just anxiety you suffered or was it depression also x
what current med works for you? I tried sertraline and didn’t do too good on that hence going back to citalopram which isnt working at all it seems. did you find it hard switching meds? that’s what worries me the most. getting a lot worse. I have heard paxil is a good med aswell.

maybe you should talk to your doctor about changing your SSRI and maybe trying snri. I’m not familiar with this but my friend said snri works better for her

I had depression as well but that was secondary to anxiety. Usually the Dr will cross taper drugs when switching to help prevent side effects and also to prevent you from being without anything at all! i would not let fear keep you from switching!

I think what worries me about switching is all the horror stories you hear about withdrawals lasting a year and permanent damage and all of that. I think that’s the only reason I have stick with citalopram again for so long tbh. did you find switching difficult withdrawals wise? you said you have been on paxil and sertraline? how were they both for you? x

thank you x I have been looking into snris aswell x it’s hard to know what to do isnt it when feeling do unwell.
did you have to try many before you found the right one?

this is my first time ever so I’m ok so far on lexopro but its only 2 weeks so far

I actually just added a med to my sertraline, BuSpar at first i was anxious because i read it could cause serotonin syndrome but im a week in and i can see a improvement in my symptoms and ive not reached theraputic dosage yet so im very optimistic. honestly when my dr told me I had to come off paxil due to pregnancy i freaked out bc i had heard its the hardest to come off of but my transition to zoloft went very smoothly even with all the added pressure of pregnancy. Paxil worked better for me than zoloft based off my OCD tendencies but wasn’t safe for pregnancy
