Tinnitus and excess mucus

This started a week ago at night I started getting ringing sensation in both my ears which persisted that night and wouldn't let me sleep went to the Ent department and got diagnosed as eustachian tube blockage as I had popping of ears and had to constantly swallow so that the ears feel better had a Pure tone audiometry done which should no hearing loss then had a tympanomarty which showed a bit increase in the middle ear pressure got prescribed with anti histamine and antibiotics any idea when the tinnitus goes it has decreased ro an extent it doesn't disturb but if I close my ears I can hear it anyone experienced the same?

Hi this is very common and absolutely nothing to worry about. When you have negative middle ear pressure (as occurs in blocked eustachian tubes) it dulls your hearing. Your hearing can still be normal but not quite as good as it usually is. This can mean that you hear tinnitus instead of the outside noise. It usually clears up within two to three weeks or sooner, depending on how long it takes for your ears to stop blocking up. Because it is something you don't usually hear, your brain takes a lot of notice of it. It is the brains way of telling you something isn't normal. The best thing you can do is to enjoy it like you enjoy the sound of the ocean or a running river. If you feel positive about it your brain won't take so much notice as you are sending it messages that everything is ok and there is nothing to worry about.

Thanks alot for the reassurance 😊

Hopefully it'll go soon fingers crossed

The ringing is still der its so irritating

It's only been a couple of days. I have it all the time and it doesn't bother me. It's because you are worrying about it that you are tuning in to it so much. I lay here quietly and wondered if I had tinnitus now, and it is there but because I am not concerned about it I don't listen for it. Keep telling yourself that it is normal. Millions of people have it. It doesn't kill you, it won't drive you insane and it has no negative effect except that you are worrying about it. Try and keep your mind busy until you stop thinking about it. It's like any obsessive thought, the more you distract yourself, the less worried you will be. Play music or TV at a quiet volume, keep your window open so you can hear outside sound. I promise that even if it stayed with you for the rest of your life, you eventually won't notice it because you won't think about it. Because you have been unwell, the chances are in 2 weeks it will be gone but give your body time to completely heal. Tinnitus is not a bad thing, it is the worrying about it that is the problem.

I am trying my best to avoid getting distracted by it 😞

Hi olizzieo

Update about my tinnitus it has decreased from what it was earlier after prescribing me some steroids as I had inflammation in the nose is this a good sign does tinnitus caused by inflammation go away?

Yes absolutely!!! That is great news. I hope your next update is that it has gone for good!!

Although the ringing increases ad decreases again and again sometimes unnoticeable

That is what tinnitus does with a lot of people. It gets louder and softer and sometimes is unnoticeable. It seems to be the nature of tinnitus. There are very few that get loud, constant roaring tinnitus. Those that do are often suffering from hearing loss as well as tinnitus.

The ringing and the post nasal drip is der this bilateral ringing is too irritating at times increases when I lie down and I'm evenings, can it take this long for the tinnitus to go? O should I just live with it?

Tinnitus is most often noticeable at night when it is quiet. That is when you can put music or TV on, open the window - anything to increase sound around you so you don't tune in to the tinnitus. I would expect it to go in a few weeks to months, depending on how long your eustachian tubes stay blocked. It sounds like the tinnitus is just being noticed because of the blockage in your ears.

Guess it's not gonna leave me soon I have to learn to stay with it really distressing n depressing

Do you still have to pop your ears often and if so how many times a day are you popping them? If you feel like your ears are blocked up or you have post nasal drip, go back to the audiologist to have tympanograms to see if the pressure in your middle ears is negative. If it is, that would be the cause of your tinnitus. If it's not, find an audiologist who is a tinnitus specialist so they can assess you. If you still have symptoms that are affected by your nose and ears then the tinnitus is probably because of them. Some times it can take months to clear up so don't give up hope.

Ya popping of ears when ever I swallow and post nasal drip is also der why does it take so long for it to go

If you still have those problems that that is most likely the cause of your tinnitus. There are lots of viruses that can take a long time to clear up. I would go and see an ear specialist and if they don't solve the problem, go to another one. Try and find an ENT that specialises in eustachian tube dysfunction.

Happy to say that tinnitus is 90 % gone nasal congestion n post nasal drip decreased, popping is still der bilaterally thanks alot olizzieo will let u know when it's completely gone

Fantastic news!!! I'm sure it will all be gone in the next few weeks

It's good I had tinnitus came to know about hazards of loud music which I used occasionally for a short time it really opened my eyes towards ear protection now I'm gonna get a noise cancellation earphones so I don't have turn up volume when I'm studying
