Hi, I am due to have right hip replacement soon. I am forty years of age and have a two year old. We live in the country and most of my family are in Ireland. So I'm a bit nervous. Please can you give me some tips, esp with my son. Apart from getting a bit depressed, I'm mostly worried about him. Any advise appreciated.
Hello, Trixybelle!
A THR is major surgery, and you won't be able to do much for your very young son for a couple of weeks, beyond cuddling with him! If I were you, I'd make sure that there will be plenty of help for dealing with his needs. If you try to do it all, you might compromise your own recovery.
As far as tips, for preparing for the surgery, and how to deal with things afrerwards, you might want to check out "A laymans guide to Total Hip Replacement from one of our users - Rocketman54", which is the last of the resources listed in the pinned discussion at the top of the thread page called THR-Useful Resources: http://patient.info/forums/discuss/thr-useful-resources-487147. Graham (Rocketman) created this page so that many good ideas regarding pre-op, post-op and recovery issues, based on his experience and those of other users on this site, would be in one place.
Wishing you all the best with your surgery and recovery!
Exactly what AnnieK said. If I did not have my wife to help me the first 2 weeks I would have been in deep trouble. I am also a bit easier to handle than a 2 year old. I have been compared to a 5 year old. Get a family member and or Friends the first few weeks Best of luck
