Tiredness after thr

Had surgery 12 weeks ago and am still so tired. I am 77 and had surgery after an accident. I had no idea what to expect as far as recovery was concerned. Is it normal to still feel tired? Other people seem to be back to normal. My doc says that because it was such a shock to my system recovery might take a little longer.

It's normal and common. Heck, it was a massive operation. The key is that you are not in any pain as before. Eat, sleep, walk and have fun

Dear Eve

Yes it is perfectly normal to feel pretty drained after all it is a pretty large surgery even though hip surgery is pretty common place these days.

Some people make a quick recovery which I believe is very much down to one's physical condition.  It helps to not be overweight or a smoker and to be only a moderate if at all drinker and a positive go for it attitude.  A little bit of good luck is also useful!

How is your mobility now and your pain, I hope that has gone.

Cheers

Richard

Hi Eve..I posted a few days ago ... 12 weeks after surgery, and Im shattered!! people all reminded me that it  is a major op...and I see its not progressive! one day good 2 days bad!some days keep going back to bed!!

I.m 79 and have the other hip scheduled for 4 weeks time!

Courage!!! and I didnt have an accident but was in considerable pain beforehand!

Best wishes Merelina

Hi Eve, I'm pleased you've now had the op, I'm still waiting in a lot of pain for mine, should be about end of October I hope..... Im 75 so it was helpful to me to read your post as I won't be so impatient now to be up and around doing everything if I follow on like you. Maybe it's our age? We may feel 21 in our heads but operations remind us we're not! I'm sure you will get other replies more helpful than mine but I will follow this post to see what other people our age think.  if I'm like you after my op I shall catch up with all my TV recorded programs and all the books I keep meaning to read!! Happy recovery!

"...Is it normal to still feel tired? Other people seem to be back to normal...."

Hello Eve-

Forget other people. You are you. "Every case is different", as the docs love to say. But, it's true.

Give yourself another month or two. Do your exercises. Rest. Walk a bit more each day. Rest again.

Come December, plan a little getaway holiday to a nice warm place. Enjoy your new hip joint.

Hope this helps.

Hi Eve.  I am so sorry to hear about your accident.  I'm not surprised you feel so tired as you had no time to prepare for the surgery so the shock alone would be tiring enough let alone the surgery.  Be kind to yourself and patient.  I am 49 and had my surgery at the end of June and had known about it since February and still found it shocking.  Everyone says it is routine surgery which it is but major all the same.  Best wishes for your recovery.  Xx

Thank you merelina and everyone else for your replies. It helps to know that you are not alone. I have never felt my age until now. Never had bad arthritis etc. I decided to cut down a tree, a branch got stuck, i pulled it and fell. Took me 2 hrs to drag myself inside to a phone by which time I was sunburnt and dehydrated. I live in Australia in the tropics.

The only pain I have is muscular and I walk unaided indoors. Like you I feel that it is one step forward and two back! Imagination doesn't help either!

Hi Eve,

Warm welcome to the hippies forum where we share our personal experiences and stories -

well .. you are in good company - your doctor is right - you fell, broke your hip, had to drag yourself for 2 hours to get help, then the surgery - Cut muscles, tendons, perhaps forcefully dislocation of joint, repair to break, hardware placed, etc --- anesthesia and the whole post-op experience following -

Healing takes a lot of energy - not only physically, but also emotionally, mentally and spiritually -

The hip itself is healing without needing our help, the rest is trying to catch up and that might take some time ..just go with it ... stop criticizing your self and be so harsh, darling ...

you are doing an excellent job -  give yourself a pat on the shoulder end let your body know - she will appreciate that --- seriously ... and come here anytime you feel like it okay ...

big warm hug

renee

Thank you renee for your post. It really helped. I actually managed to drive down to the local shop today. Only five minutes away but have been too nervous until today. Wore me out but it was a good tiredness. Again, thank you.

Hugs back.

Hi eve

Im 70 years old and had a hip replacement 20 months ago.  I always feel tired but have to keep myself going.  Like your doctor says it was a shock to the system and takes time to recover and get back to normal.  I know it gets trustrating but keep going.

All the best Brenda
