Hi
I had my left knee replaced about a year ago and when l was being given anasthetic to put me out you also get a injection in your groin which numbs the leg from waist down. I never seen them give me it as l must have been asleep. But l defo got it as when you wake you can't feel your leg for a while and it feels like a tonne weight.
Well l had my right knee done on the 21st. My surgery was at 6pm at night and it was same consultant and anaesthetist and she told me she had started a new way of numbing the leg and it had been very sucesful. This time they done it in front of me. What they do is an ultrasound further down your leg just above my knee. So you see it on the screen they look for the muscle and inject loads of this stuff in while she watches on the screen. Then l was put asleep.
Well l have to say it made a huge diffrence. The did not think l would be up and about the next day but l was at 7am with very little pain. And it continued for a few days and l was home. Then suddenly l got the pain l had with my 1st one it was agony. So l never got away with the pain on knee replacement it was just delayed. I spent 2 days crying with pain and the 3rd it started to ease. Thank god thats my last one for a while. Had 2 new hips and 2 knees and an ankle fusion all in 2 to 3 years. Hard going.

HI Laura
Sound like you have been through a lot
I had my surgery 4th July and am almost fully recovered
Stay strong knowing that it will get easier and it will all be worth it !
I've had one tkr this year and am having the other knee done next year. One question. If you have OA in knees does it spread to other joints? I've only been married coming up for 4 months and I hate the thought of my husband being a "carer"
I bet you cause problems at airport security , with all that metal .
Yeah l recovered quite quick from all my replacements. I start my physì on 14th dec. To think l never new l had OA u
ntil 2-3 years ago . Up to then walking was a huge part of me and husbands life. We walked a lot on holidays we would always go twice a year. Then. It all stopped when l was about 42 years old. I have never been a holiday or walked. I worked full time as a bank manager. I had to give up that position and drop 2 days off my week. It came from know where and is now my life which l have to try and make most if 😆
Laura
No louise it should not spread but l think a lot of peoples do. There is a blood test they can do to check its not related but l had it and it showed nothing. Unfortunatly my husband has become my carer and l am 44. But thats the hand we have been dealt.
Maybe when my knee recovers things
wiĺl get better.
Laura
I am only 44 too 😡
Not quite sure why they gave you this to numb your leg if you were asleep anyway. I had TKR 5 years ago. They just gave me epidural so I was awake throughout the operation. I hate coming round from anaesthetics so this was my choice.
Sarah
I hate the thought of it. We've only been married nearly 4 months. I'm 51 and he's 43. I'm fine now, just worrying about the future.
I had an epidural too but they also sedated me because I didn't want to hear what was going on. It's just like being asleep, no anesthetic. They wake you up when they're finished, no grogginess or anything
I had that without the sedation for my second tkr . Spent half of the time listening to music and the rest talking to the anaesthetist . Was an interesting experience , a bit noisy at times with all the hammering and banging .
Don't worry , I'm coming up to 20 and 18 years since mine , and have had no problems .
Was it not weird? I don't know if I'd fancy hearing all that going on lol
Oh good. Time to stop worrying then 😁
Someone I know with osteoarthritis said it's far worse pain and trouble in the knees than other bits of body, so I am hoping that is true!
I am hoping keeping the weight off and keeping moving will keep me active and mobile. I agree it is an unpleasant thought but i think rate of progression must vary a lot? As knee is largest weight bearing joint, I think with other joints it's not so bad...well, hope so!😕
Hi Louise Are you in the UK? Having my 2nd TKR on Friday and and I know the antithesis will want me to have it done this way. Were you knocked out for the complete operation, how long was it before you came round? Anything else you can remember about it?
This group is suppose to be to give people confidence and support with regards a knee operation I had a knee replacement with a spinal injection and sedation. I knew nothing Yes! You are given an injection to help with pain and infection before you leave the theatre. I was in a ward of eight ladies not one person was in agony. Little pain and uncomfortable especially sleeping but nursing staff are in hand if you need painkillers nothing strong. I enjoyed a lunch then out of bed within two hours for a trip to the bathroom with a frame walker. I had another knee operation age 15 l am now 68 They kept me in bed three weeks that was agony in what you could call the older end days. I am due a replacement on that knee 3rd of Jan l am nervous naturally but really wouldent like to have read your message if l handnt experience nine operations and worked on an NHS ward it would scare me big time.
No it was very interesting , had a great conversation with the anaesthetist . Could hear the noise but could not feel anything at all . I may be crazy but I enjoyed the experience . If you're not going to be asleep you don't worry about waking up .
I was away for over 2 hours. After I was given the spinal, don't know if they gave me a sedative at the same time. All I remember is seeing my leg being lifted up in the air and me saying whose leg is that? Lol. They wake you up as soon as they're finished and take you back to the ward. I felt great, had tea and toast then had a wee sleep.
I might actually do this next time. I'm saying that now haha, might change my mind when the time comes
There was 6 of us on the ward. We laughed for the two days we were in. The nurses were brilliant, a couple in particular were hilarious 😂
