TKR one week ago today

Had TKR last week and it was an outpatient surgery. Haven't seen any others that were done outpatient. Went into the surgery center at 5:30 last Wednesday morning and was home by 1:00. Home health came to visit that day and two days following and my PT started that day as well. Anybody else have this surgery done outpatient? Slow healing process so far but I know I'm early in the game. Have really enjoyed reading this forum. It has helped me Put things into perspective.

Its offered at our hospital/ortho group. I was given option but bilateral pkr i deferred to stay overnite in hosp. Thats great you qualified for it! Sounds like you're doing great! I am interested in your recovery as opposed to traditional plan of care. What state do you live in?

OUTPATIENT???  REALLY???

I can't even imagine doing that.  OMG...

Yes...very slow...prepare for a year's worth of work.  Keep that in mind if you ever get tempted to say: "I'm x weeks post-op.  I should be better than I am now."  Big no-no.  Click my picture and then select "See All Discussions".  Lots of stuff there and in so many posts all across the Forum to help you out.  Great people on here.

Don't think I would like to have a TKR as an outpatient . It is serious surgery .  What next , heart transplants while you wait ? .

I live in Louisiana. Home health came out of the day of the surgery and the next two days and drew blood, took vitals, etc. PT also came day of surgery and started a few exercises with me and is coming 3 days per week to my home. Go to the Dr. Friday.

Wow. Outpatient!! Crazy! I was in hospital for one night. Well, it's been quite a difficult journey for me in so many ways, but I can say that this forum really helps me put things into perspective. I finally think I can see the light on the other side. I'm just starting week 8. So good luck to you, and happy healing.

Thanks so much.

Lol!

How about drive-up appendectomies?  I know the hospitals don't like to waste bed spaces, but for a TKR?  I had an overnight before I went home.  Slice, dice and send you home immediately with 2 1/2 pounds of metal in you?  Really?  Unreal...

When I had mine done almost 20 and 18 years ago I was in hospital for at least 5 days . I think that really helped with my quick recovery . Physio next day , and nursing care and pain managment until I went home .

Glad you've already been here reading! It really does make you see what the real deal is after TKR. Out-patient. Wow. I'm in Oklahoma, did a two night stay. Glad you were able to fit that model. Do keep us posted as to how that's going. Read everything Chico Marx has posted.. :^)

Good healing to you!

Hi kmoe, obviously your not in UK, where are you, don't think we do outpatient knee replacement, I hope your doing ok

We don't run the NHS like McDonalds yet .

Hi and amazing news re your day surgery. I could not have gone home that quickly. You are a legend! I wish you joyful days to total recovery. x

Thanks for your post kmoe11 and so happy to hear your o/p experience for your TKR was positive. I am in Florida and will be having a PKR o/p on 7/26. My surgeon believes if you are considered healthy without complicating medical factors, o/p is better. (plus less chance of infection) Good luck and keep us posted with your progress. I will be following closely!

Thank goodness for that, I suppose there will come a time when you can ring an 0800 number and get do it yourself TKR and maybe HR instructiins, save a packet in hospital stays, must be sure to have a good disinfectant

Obviously I'm being moderated for posting an amusing post LOL

Wow, I can't even imagine leaving the hospital the same day. I was on the regular orthopedic floor for 4 days, one of which I had a blood transfusion. The next 5 days were on the transitional floor in which you had PT 3 times a day. In the hospital a total of 9 days. Then I started out patient PT. You are certainly a trooper!

Hi Kmoe,  I'm 45min. n.e.of Atlanta and it's not uncommon here. I've read there is a group in Pittsburg doing it now too. However,..that doesn't mean you won't go through some tough times, sleep, swelling, etc.

I know several people that are in pretty good shape in about 4months.

If I had it to do over again I'd get a FitBit right away and learn not to over do it!!!

Oh my goodness.  I had mine done almost 2 years ago in England and was in for 4 nights.  First night they kept us in a recovery room, then the next three in my own room.  Some people have catheters fitted initially, luckily I didn't need one.  Physio started the next day.

i was considered pretty fit, just can't imagine in and out in one day, WOW.

please everyone remember that your recovery is very much an individual thing, we are all different, but I was told before the op to allow 9-18 months.  I would agree with that and I did my exercises religiously.  If you dare to look at the op on YouTube it is a major operation, you won't be ok in a few weeks, it all takes time.  Same with the bend we get initially, we are all different.

This is the best place to get advice.  It was my Bible/lifesaver etc.

good luck
