hello,
i am almost 52, was in a car accident in march , MRI arthrogram confirms I have torn labrum in a few areas as well as osteoarthritis. I am now off work because of the horrible pain and difficulty doing the basics such as going up stairs, putting on socks, bending etc in addition to difficulty sleeping. the specialist told me that I am too young for hip replacement and he doubts another specialist who deals with torn labrum would do surgery on me to repair it because it is not a clean tear and I also have arthritis. He said I may just have to live with it! I am in constant pain, can't babysit my granddaughter, have to now apply for disability through work. There has to be a better answer than this! He stated that he would try an injection to see if it is the hip labrum or arthritis that is actually causing me pain. If it is arthritis he can just keep doing injections. However, I am positive it is torn labrum causing me pain due to the clicking and lockin and my hip pain only started after my car accident. Help !! Why can't I get a replacement and how on earth am I just just suppose to live with this? I asked the specialist "what am i supposed to do about work? He stated "I don't know"
help!!
That is just ridiculous! You should be able to get a hip replacement if needed, which it sounds like it is. I would get a second opinion. Good luck!
Can you afford a private consultation? Are you in U.K.?
Don't give up!!! Keep pushing for a hip replacement. A second and third opinion might be called for, but just don't quit.
I understand that now in UK over thirty per cent of hip operations are private. I suspect that is the grand plan. There are dozens of people under fifty who have had hip replacements. It seems you are put off having one if you smoke and if you are overweight or "too young" although there is no problem having the op privately, probably with the same surgeon even. It seems it is not just hips that are falling into this elective surgery black hole which is even more worrying.
I am unsure what a torn labrum is but i got my first artificial joint at 49 yes they said it was young and it would need replacing after 10 years which i had done last year also pain relief has to be taken everyday i would ask to see a different surgeon or check with gp to refer youto a different hospital good luck anyway
Rubbish - get a second opinion ! 😤
Hi Kidape, sorry to hear this you need a second opinion. At 55 I was told by one hospital too young. Ask my GP to send me elsewhere. Went to my.local hospital. Saw a surgeon who had no hesitation in telling me I needed a hip replacement. Had I not been going on holiday. He would have done it urgently. Had it done at 56 ceramic ball & socket and titanium stem. He told me it will last a lifetime.
Oh my goodness, thank you so much everyone. I am getting a second opinion.
a torn labrum is the ring of cartilage surrounding your hip joint. Apparently if you have that and arthritis they won't repair the torn labrum either because you are just going to have a hip replacement simeday anyways and it often doesn't work.
The specialist also told me they are two separate things. Which has me confused because if they give me a hip replacement does that not include fixing the torn labrum?
I am am in Canada and this is public healthcare.
The speciialist also also went on to say it is a huge decision to have a hip replacement. He told me it is not like getting a hair cut. Haha. He said that complications may arise when I need the second one and I may be worse off then, meaning the operation is so complex it may not work,
i know there is a website called hiprunners for people who have had replacements and still run. I am a runner, well jogger and the specialist told me in no uncertain terms I will never run again,
any more suggestions, I would love,
thanks so much!
One more thing, pain meds do not work nothing ! And I am allergic to anti inflammatory meds!
Hi, I am a 51 year old woman and my hips were damaged by a type of arthritis caused by my Chrones disease. Initially I was told I was too young for hip replacement but I would not take no for an answer. I told the consultant that I needed my mobility back now when I am relatively healthy. Eventually they agreed and I am 4 months post op from a right THR which was done at an NHS hospital.
My advice, don't take no for an answer, do your research (most artificial hips last 15+ years now) and don't let the b******'s get you down!!!
Good luck.
Thank you ! Do You know if your labrum was scraped out when you had your hip replacement? Is this particular the procedure?
I meant part of the procedure
Dear Janeane
May I. Inquire why your hip replacement only lasted for such a short time?
Cheers Richard
I'm in the US so I'm not sure how things work in the UK, but I'm 31 and just had my hip replaced.. If possible, please see another specialist!!!
Dear Lisa. I completely agree with you!
Cheers Richard
Yes - they need to get down to clean bone to insert the cup part of hip replacement into your pelvic bones, then it is cememted or at worse screwed into place.
If Canada is the same as australia, you only rate a hip replacement not on the amount of pain you are in, but on your ability to function, what a crock. I was told my inability to walk in the end, and then when I finally saw the specialist in the public system, he told me he should have seen me five years previous, be the squeeky wheel, I wish i had not been so trusting of my local GP, as I was a mess when I finally got to the hospital. 10 days between first outpatients appt, and surgery, is pretty urgent, rating up there with cancer patients, but even that blew out, I developed a clot in lower leg, surgery cancelled. Had to wait another six weeks.
I was in a similar situation, but younger than you at 44 years old. Also had a torn labrum and osteoarthritis, and was dealing with crippling pain. One doctor told me no, so I got a second opinion and he told me yes. He referred me to an excellent doctor out of state to do an anterior approach replacement, which is better for younger patients that are in okay physical shape.
it was the best thing I've ever done. The pain was gone immediately and my life is back. I'd either keep pushing this doctor or get another opinion.
Thanks so much! did the specialist who did yours state why the other specialist refused to do it? I wonder why the differing opinions, so frustrating. How long will your new hip last? Thanks again
thank you, do you know if there are injections for torn labrum pain? Or is this just for arthritis...the cortisone shots.
