hi Im due a toal hip replacement with a bone graft impaction. My operation as been cancelled twice now and hopefully should go ahead on the 30th nov.
Im 42 and so nervous im having general anesthetic, im in so much pain im finding it hard to function i struggle to pop to town or do the shopping because within an hour i need to go home due to not coping with the pain .
I will not be able to weight bear for 6 weeks or so after op due to the bne graft ,im so not looking forward to it but can not wait to be pain free ...all i want to do is cry or sleep at moment ....has anyone else had the imapction ? x
Hi. Im 19 and im due to get a thr and my hips moved down in the next few month. This will be 10th op for my disability and i know exactly how you feel. Im in pain all the time and can barely walk. Iv always had my ops through general anisthetic but now i hear thr are done with an epidural. That makes me more worried though. Hope you are ok
Epidural is a walk in the park compared to general. Much easier on body and the first few hours after op are painfree. I was given heavy sedation both times and heard smelled was aware of nothing. Just slept through it. No need to be afraid but know that is easy to say being on the other side. Best of luck whatever you choose.
I know epidural is not for everyone, and I believe that general may be better for some especially the more complex conditions as it's easier to keep you knocked out.
Personally I was out in and out in an hour from a straightforward operation under epidural with no sedation. I heard everything, chatted to the anethesetist and listened to my ipod music, but felt absolutely nothing.
Thankfully I don't have the extra complication you have, so no advice from me there, sorry.

i was told i would be having a spinal but when i met the anesthatist he said it would be a general,
10 operations oh dear i feel for you i hopr your sorted soon
thanks, i wouldnt mind an epidural but the thought of the possibility of being able to hear /see/smell anything turns my stomach n scares the life out of me
I was in the same boat but listened to and trusted the anethetist. Took the leap of faith and went for it. So glad I did. Saw smelled and heard nothing. Slept through it.
Even with the epidural, you can elect for maximum sedation, so you are 'out of it' just like a general.

Hi Karen,
Welcome to our hippies family where we share our personal stories -
I know that there are some hippies here who had a bone graft - I am not one of them ... Because this requires additional surgery time, you would probably get General Anaesthesia - I chose GA (twice) because I absolutely did not want to take any changes with smelling,or hearing or even slightly feeling anything -
I had no bad reaction or side effects - I took a deep breath, then open my eyes in the recovery room - pain is controlled by medication -
I know, not fun to be non-weightbearing for 6 weeks - but the pain you have right now will be gone !!!
It is a journey and well worth it ..
come back here any time okay?
big warm hug

Yeah. I was only a bit stressdd aboit it because some people said they woke up during their ops under it
I am guessing that the epidural had not worn off, but the sedation had - there is a difference.
the epidural/Spinal Block is the bit that numbs you below the waist, the sedation keeps you unaware of what is going on.
I had the epidural, but no sedation. I was awake for the whole operation and heard it all (not for most I know), bit I felt absolutely nothing.
Talk to your anethetist, make sure he knows of your fear, and instruct him that you want to be totally sedated. If you do come around, make sure he knows so he can pump in more sedation.
I think people accidentally come around if the op lasts longer than expected, they do not like to pump you full of too much sedation so you can be brought around as soon as possible afterwards.
Hope this helps.
Best wishes
Graham
Yeah i dont think i could cope with being able to hear everything thats happening tbh
Thanks renee....i will ...its nice to hear and talk to people who know what your going through xx
