My Pre-operative Assessent will be in 21st of this month and then just waiting for the date of my left Total Hip Replacement. My surgeon wants to do the posterior method, with me as a day case. Has anyone else had their operation done this way, and how is your recovery going?
Not sure what you mean by a day case, but I assume it means in and out in one day. I had my operation at 3pm. At midnight I stood up on my own and used a walker to get to the bathroom. At 10am the next day, I climbed up a flight of stairs using crutches. At 2pm, I was release to go home. By the third day, I was using only 1 crutch. By 5 days, I didn't need anything, though I still had a slight limp. Within 3 weeks, the limp disappeared.

I think you mean out patient surgery. Yes I checked in at 7 am and checked out at 4 pm. I had the anteriorapproach which is in front. Actually I had two the within a year of one another. Both worked out very well and I'm at full capacity a year after my last surgery.
I amazes me that I was in and out ty he same day. I'm sure everything will go well for you.

I stayed three nights after Surgery posterior, I can’t imagine being sent home same day.

I had posterior thr in april. Had op at lunchtime wednesday and went home friday afternoon. Nurse told me I could shower on the thursday which I did, that was a surprise. I have had no pain since op. Good luck with your op.
Wow, are you human or what? 5 days and no walking aid? Had my
Op three weeks ago.
Was told to use two crutches for 4-5 weeks then down to one! Managing on one around the house, bur when I try without, it's dodgy. Don't want to be too cocky incase I do more damage than good. My surgeon said most cases he gets when patients have problems are the ones who've tried to do too much too soon which results in dislocatiom - a much bigger problem!
I guess everyone's different at the end of the day......
Same here Bridget. Seems quite normal to be in that length of time - after all it is a major op. My surgeon said he was going to massacre my leg 😁 but that I would be fine as long as I did as I was told and not get too cocky too soon! Good luck and have a speedt recovery! I have been told that the reason for asking/telling you to follow the 2 crutch 1 crutch, walking stick is because they have place a prosthetic inside your femure and it needs to have stability to take your weight and the heavier you are the more weight goes onto you ball and socket sending the weight though into the centre of the femur, the time allows the bone to calcify and make the hip solid hence minimising the risk of dislocation and or fratures.
But each person has to make their own choices, remember though that a revision is a much more complicated surgery than a straight original hip replacement.
Elizabeth are you in the UK? What kind of operation are you having? A day case sounds incredible. I don't think there is any way I could have gone home the same day but very interested to know your operation details. Sounds amazing!
I had to have the go ahead to leave hospital after my hip op and as it was a weekend there was no one to check if I could walk up and down stairs etc. Also I had my op in the afternoon so the spinal anaesthetic acts for about four hours so would not have warn off. As soon as I was checked by the physios though they said I was OK to go home. Which was the following day. In my case they then discovered my blood markers were very high so the surgeon said I had to stay in which was annoying as I just sat around playing with my iPad and being bored stiff!

I'm going to pack overnight things, just in case! I have worked in an orthopaedic theatre as a nursing auxiliary over five years ago, and have not heard of total hip replacements being performed as day cases before.

Yes, I am in the UK, in the North East. I am to have a posterior hip replacement. I asked the surgeon about the anterior approach but he said research shows that the posterior approach is more proven. I am having it done through the NHS and am in such discomfort, I'm not going to argue with him!
My surgeon used to do anterior and changed back to posterior as he felt there was less damage done. I must admit after the op I could not believe that my hip had actually been replaced. If you have a good surgeon that is much more important.
Please can you give me the name of your surgeon? I have never heard of day case for a THP and would love to be able to go home! I have been told 5 days in hospital....and if there was a way to recover faster I am very interested.
I have heard of day cases in the US but then they have physio back up at their homes, unlike U.K. on the NHS. In my case because I had it at a weekend none of the physios or OT people were working and we had to show we could walk upstairs before being discharged. I saw the physios on the Monday morning and they said I had passed the tests and were discharged as far they were concerned. It was the surgeon who made me stay in because of my blood markers. Otherwise I could have left the day after the op.
Hello Rose, my surgeon is Mr. Michael Reed in Northumberland, under Northumbria Healthcare NHS Trust. My daughter will be supporting me for my first week following the operation and popping in after work. I don't think he'd release me without family support.
I too, will have the stair assessment. This is the standard for all hip replacement patients. I work for the NHS and had not heard of hip replacement patients leaving hospital care so early, but the vast majority of the patients I have dealt with were much older than I am.
My pre-op assessment has now been put back until Oct 12th, so just a matter of waiting now.
Same day starting to gain Traction in the USA. SEVERAL SURGEONS DOUNG IT IN THE Chicago area. You have nurses visiting immediately and therapy. Not all individuals qualify for it. More the younger, healthier, and less complex places. I was glad I spent 3 days in the hospital. Posterior and feeling good
Best of luck. I don’t think things would have worked fast enough when I had my hip op to come out the same day. Prepare for the op, have the op, get over the spinal, climb up stairs, be discharged with the appropriate meds (which takes forever)!! I had my op at lunchtime.
