hi everyone
ive had a hip replacement in april which went very well after being very unwell for a number of years. recovery since operation has gone quiet well except last week i over did it ie walking and was left with pain from hip and at one point had difficult weight bearing. after resting for almost 4 days hip has once again settled down.
has anyone else experience this? would be interested in hearing from anyone that has
having my second hip replaced in february 2015
You are doing well. Personally I believe you can overdo the exercise/walking and it's advisable to err on the side of caution. During my 14 month recovery I made sure I put my legs up after any distance walking. Swelling is a warning fir instance, but you've got through it and will know your limits next time. Pain? Had it for a year even lying down. I guess we all gave to get to know our bodies and treat our implants like a newborn! Or at least with respect.
i feel brilliant now since operation but was really worried will need to be abit more careful now
how are you feeling after your operation?
I had a THR back in February and after a painful start things slowly improved.
I too get pain from groin area if I walk more than a few hours, but it does settle down after rest.
A new hip can never be as good as your own healthy hip..but still far better than a worn one caused by years of arthritis.
Im now waiting to have my other hip replaced, and with some trepidation I must admit.
In fact I'm frightened to death of something going wrong or ending up with a leg discrepancy...but I'm still getting it done.
hello, im having my other hip done on february 18th 2015, im feeling ok about it,have a very good surgeon who i trust completly. im more concerned about the care i receive from nursing staff which wasnt the best ....
Hi Paulus,
Did you get an anterior or posterior THR? Is there MORE pain after the surgery than before? You still have pain after one year? Did you lose a lot of flexibility after the THR? I have AVN and my leg is some days great and some days terrible. I'm getting an anterior THR soon and I'm so scared.
The hospital and patient stories say recovery in days and in six months walking well and after a year, most of flexibilty back and feels like your own hip. But here, everyone is having problems.
Should I wait longer? So many second thoughts, never had surgery before...
Thanks for any advice!
Like I responded to Paulus' comment - do you really have pain after a whole year??? I'm having a THR, first surgery of my life. The thought of the surgeon cutting my bones is terrifying to me! All the posts here say the pain is worse afterwards than before. You even have pain lying down? I don't have any right now without the surgery.
I have avascular necrosis so they want to do the anterior THR. Something does feels really weird with my leg and x-rays and MRI show damage but now I'm having second thoughts. Should I wait?
Are you glad you had it done? Does it feel like your own hip before?
I am mobile and almost painfree after 14 months. But I had a terrible 10 months. And i am a funny shape due to a huge implant in my tiny bones. I dread the next one. My other side now slightly more painful than the operated side and I'm unable to lie on the operated side as it sticks out. Also on my back as it probably is too big a circumstance.i.e. all the way round. Hence my pursuing this issue of sizing. ...
Hi Jody..that's a lot of Qsts ha.
UK surgeons seem to stick with the tried and tested posterior approach, that's not to say there's anything wrong with the anterior which seems to be favoured in the US I believe.
I hadn't had surgery before either, and like most folks it was a frightening prospect.
I did have post op pain from the joint for about 12wks,but very gradually things improved and 10 months on I'm fairly pain free apart from the odd time after a long walk when I do get joint pain the next day,but nothing compared to the agony before the operation.
Its not quite true that everybody's having problems..from the thousands of THRs done annually, the unfortunate folks who do have problems are still a small minority, still small comfort if your one of them.
If you want to maybe delay THR I can recommend non weight bearing exercise such as swimming or stationary biking which builds up the muscles needed to support the hip and knee joints..I'm waiting for my 2nd HR but the affected joint has improved significantly over the last few months since using an exercise bike every other day..try it,you've nothing to lose.
My decision to go ahead with the op for me was easy,I could hardly walk more than 50yards.
Once life becomes impossible you have to take the op risk, there's nothing to lose.
If you decide to go ahead with the op the main advice always given on here is to choose a good surgeon with a proven track record...but do try very pre op option first,it is still major surgery after all.
Whatever you decide good luck.
Paul UK.
Hi Paul,
Thanks for the awesome advice! I hope and wish I'm one of the lucky ones with no problems at all. I can't believe I can never run again:-( I'm going to run to the mailbox every day until my surgery, just to enjoy it!
Your post-op pain of 3 months sounds like a long time. Do you take pain meds that long? I'm like you were - can't walk the mall or the grocery store without a cane for long - it went downhill in only 2 months!
I felt very intimidated asking any surgeon about his track record and don't know anyone in this big city who has had a THR. Consulted with 7 different surgeons, so I just went with my intuition. I'm working out my upper body and core but I need to do the stationary bike.
Good luck with your rehab, maybe will visit UK afterwards as a treat to myself!
OMG, your implant is so big it shows? That scares me about my upcoming THR even more - the surgeon said they use a bigger ball to avoid dislocation, I guess the whole thing is prob bigger. I hope it doesn't show on me:-( I'll have to eat more to get bigger thighs!
Glad your pain and mobility went well, but a whole year of my life recovering sounds very sad. I'm going to do every thing I can to avoid THR on the right!
Yes I did take painkillers every day for a few months, and gradually lowered the dose over the next few months until I didn't need them.
Looking back now those three or four months of some pain soon passed and it's now hard to remember exact details, the brain has a way of blocking unpleasant times IMO.
If you can still manage to run,how bad is your hip?..Icould hardly even walk before my op.
If you search the net you should find some info on any surgeon,at least you can in the UK.
Defo try the stationary bike, but don't expect instant results,it takes time to build up wasted muscles.
If it works it could help a few folks delay their THRs..who knows.
Ill report on my progress for sure.
I have a brother who's lived in San Francisco for 25yrs..he loves it.
You already know from your first op that this is major surgery. The discomfort and tme it takes to recover are reflecting that. Yes you can over do it but rest usually takes care of that. it is all about knowledge. I came to this siite because I have a problem following a THR almost three years ago but I realise now that my problem is nothing compared to some. The only problem with this site is that most if not all came here for the same reason as me. They have a probem. It does not reflect the thousands and thousands of people who have no problems at all after surgery. You have to put things in perspective or you will terrify yourself. Also, you should google your surgeon if you feel you cannot ask him about his success rate. I do not know where you are but here in the UK they have just started publishing surgeons records on the internet. I looked up a couple of mine and it was good to see they have a good track record. At the end of the day it is only you who can tell when you are ready for surgery. You are in control of that. Since your first question noted above you have deviated a lot and now appear quite scared about your second op. Maybe this site is not for you?
