On my six week after total hip replacement. Was given home excercises to do when I left hospital. No physio follow up etc. so felt I was able to use one crutch. Can you advise if this is o.k. Also when sitting down for any length of time. On chair supplied on loan. By nhs. They are uncomfortable but necessary I suppose. Does anyone experience the feeling (I Can only describe like I am sitting in something arched like half a cereal bowl) know this sounds strange but it's how it feels to me.
Hi Jean If you are 6 weeks post op you should be able to use one crutch {inside at least} but only if you feel happy doing this......If you dont just keep using 2 crutches until you fee ready to give one up.
I was sent home after 3 days with a piece of paper with exercises on it and that was my physio Do it yourself.......you tend not to be so good at doing them if you are not answerable to anyone Or that was me anyway.
As for the chair.....I had the loan of a chair.....is it one of those beautiful {NOT } brown ones......still its better to be using the correct chair.
I dont think i felt anything like that. Can you ask your physiotherapist {even if its on the phone} about it and see what she says?

Eileen
Thank you Eileen for your reply. It helped me Knowing you left hospital with a list of excercises ,and no physio planned and have to sit in the chair provided. At least I know it's normal. I will be seeing my surgeon next week so will mention the strange sensation I feel when sitting for a while. Hopefully he will throw some light on it for me.. Once again thanks for your reply and have a continued recovery.
Take care
Jean,
Thank Jean
I hope you get the seating sorted out when you talk to the consultant
My problem is that 4 weeks post op I fractured my greater trochanter bone {apparently the femur} They discovered after I had done that ...I have osteoporosis and that is why if fractured so easily.
They said there was nothing the could do, it would heal itself, but would take a long time......7 months later I'm still on crutches

Hi Jean, isn't it strange how different hospitals treat you so differently. I was lucky enough to come home with home physio calls. After two weeks she encouraged me to use one crutch around the house during the main part of the day which I am doing for most part. I was also given a list of exercises which she checks I am doing when she visits.
i get a weird sensation in my leg mostly at night, like a heavy pins and needles feeling, so uncomfortable. The only thing I keep saying everything is far better than the pain I had before lol.
good luck.
Thank you for your reply. Your comments do help. Yes different hospitals do treat us differently and How right you are. Far less pain now than before operation. On the whole I would say I am doing good. But sleeping on my back and lack of sleep is quite trying., and I will have to have more patience But know will get there in the end.
bye Jean

If only I could say that.....but I'm much sorer that before ther THR and cant see an end to this awful pain mostly from my fracture

Hi jean
I also had the delightful experience if getting the big brown beast. It was the most uncomfortable thing my rear end has had the pleasure of gracing. When I went to my preop I was given a chair high I used my own chair and bought 2 square thick cushions which I used from my second day out of hospital. All I can say is it worked for me and was probably against ever recommendation made by the OT but it was comfortable. For me the most important thing was I felt normal I was sitting in a normal chair.
Hi Jean, I am 6wks post Op, I was offered the seat and chairs raisers which fitted under our settee which worked great and just had an extra cushion behind, so it was good to have a comfortable seat, same hear with the excercise plan but hubby keeps me to this and checks I am increasing day by day, I am seeing my consultant on 16th to see if he signs me off, still on two crutches when going on walks, one around house
Hi Jean,
i think I know what you mean about the weird feeling. Mine felt like I was sitting on the corner of a hard-back book. That lasted about 3-4 weeks, but has gradually eased off. I just put it down to healing pain/weirdness
Hi Jean I'm 7 weeks post THR now and the feeling you're having is exactly the same as I feel but I had my check up on Tuesday and was told this is perfectly normal and that I had to continue using my NHS chair until 12 weeks - I call it my throne ha ha - I honestly thought there was something wrong with my new hip but they laughed and said no it was normal. As for the crutch I wwas told to keep using it as I need a knee replacement on the same side and this would take some pressure off my bad knee but I'm pottering around the house without it. I've also been told I can go back to the gym now but must see a personal trainer at least once and explain about my hip so they can tell me what to do and what not to do. They also said my scar was 'wonderful!' but I've been using Bio Oil on it and the lumpiness is going
Good luck and remember everybody heals at a different rate and you know your body and you'll know if you are doing too much x
Thanks for your reply. Glad I am going for my. Check up 10th Sept. We must be on the same wave length. My scar is great. I think that's because I have also been using Boi Oil. You answered the question re strange sensation whilst sitting which is normal. This forum is wonderfull got all my questions sorted.
thanks take care.
I was really scared before my op but this forum helped alot - I tried to not read the horror stories - I'm so glad I had it done and will be okay about getting my knee done which hopefully will be in about 3 months I'm sure everything will be fine at your check up x
Also 6 weeks tomorrow. Big brown chair also and NOT comfortable. Have needed cushions. Have several chairs which are ok in height and I move between them during the day. Have not found sitting very comfortable and do recognise the cereal bowl analogy also like sitting on a book corner that someone mentioned. Feel I am walking well with minimal discomfort. One stick in the house but still prefer the two crutches outdoors. Was also given minimal guidance on exercising and no surgical stockings. Saw surgeon last week and he seemed happy with me and said just to continue mobilising as my body allows and to get rid of sticks etc when I feel confident. No big rush. Ankle swells up if I do too much. Standing still for any length of time also not comfortable. Went to my art class today for the first time and they all clapped when they saw me and said I am looking much better than preop so that is good. Feel free from that awful bone pain so the various aches and pains of now are more a nuisance than anything else. Will be good to get a decent nights sleep however as still on my back but hey ho it is early days.
Hi Jean I am 10 wks post op THR I was only in hospital two days , and sent home with Phisio sheet , in my 6 weeks post op I saw my Surgen who said everything had gone great .I was able to drive and left my crutes at the hospital , I walk perfectly with no limp , on my 9 th week I went away to a log cabin and was able to cycle it felt great ! But I will say if I sit for to long I feel like I'm sitting on something hard and curved and that's with any chair . Also at 6 wks I was told I could sleep on my side with a pillow between my legs . Hope all goes well for you and let us know why you get the pain an sitting regards Sandra x
