Total Hip Replacement

Hello you guys,

I want to throw in my current experience to 'warn' that it can happen! I am at the 8 week plus stage and out of the blue 72 hours ago I developed inflammation, heat and swelling at the base of my scar. It hadn't crossed my mind I might have a problem at this stage. My Physio has been 'overworking' me but I have also discovered, through the internet that there are internal stitches which can take 3 - 4 months to dissolve. Eureka! At least I have an answer if not yet a cure. I am on antibiotics and using a cold compress and have high hopes of feeling better in the next couple od days.

I am just 20 weeks post op and still not back at work because internal stitches caught nerves and I had to go in hosp tues to have steriod injection in area of pain, today I am feeling quite bit better apart from some pain in groin, I have been told that if this pain doesn't go I will have to have another injection in about six/eight weeks am hoping that within next couple of weeks this pain will ease. It hasn't been as straight forward as I thought it would be, just keeping fingers crossed

Hi,

Thankyou for your heads up warning. Very useful and hope you heal quickly. So far so good fr me 15 days post TLHR, but now will watch carefully any new swelling or heat as I am going through my recovery exercises.

Cheers

Georgina you must be feeling thoroughly fed up. Do hope all improves from here on.

Fed up is an understatement because been off only stat sick pay so really need to get back to work, more walking/excersise I have tried over the weeks and physio with doctor hasn't helped so just praying that this works and can get fit so can get back to normal xx

Hi. I'm about 22 weeks post TLHR. Technically, my experience has been perfect. Was weight bearing within a few days and walking without aid by a week.

Totally different to the utter screw ups with TRHR and revision, with yet another revision scheduled for May

Just wanted to add that despite brilliant and early recovery from this one, I've had lots of pain beneath the scar. To the point where ive wanted to writhe at it. I've assumed it's just a matter of the muscles waking up and repairing, but has been quite distressing.

It lasted about 4 weeks and is now easing, thankfully.

Poor old you - not a god experience. Fingers crossed all goes VERY well in May.

Thanks and best wishes to you, too, HH.

I hope the inflammation subsides, and things get back to normal very soon for you.

 Thanks for the heads up.

I think a lot of us are under the impression that as we do so well in the early days that it will be all plain sailing from then. How wrong we can be! It's easy to feel good and overdo things. I have been doing really well but woke this morning with a stiffness and ache that wasn't there yesterday but I did do quite a lot yesterday. While I'm sure it's nothing major, I still see it as my body telling me it's still early days and to be patient. Patience isn't one of my star qualities I'm afraid.

We we all need to be aware that there is an astounding amount of work being carried out by our bodies every single day and to give it the time and resources to carry out this outstanding feat of repair. Just because we can't see it or feel it, it doesn't mean it's not happening. I would just love to be able to see inside each day to see the progress and to see the muscles etc repairing and growing round the new implant. I think then I might understand exactly and behave accordingly.

I hope things are resolved for you very soon.
