Total hip replacement

Hi

can anyone tell me if it's normal to get intermittent calf and foot swelling 10 weeks post hip replacement. Mostly if I'm on my feet a lot it happens.

many thanks

sue.

Sue,

Put your feet up, you're overdoing it.  Just like I overdid the walking today, four miles was a bit too much in one go with no sticks, and no stops.  I should have stopped off at the pub 🍻

Hi Sue

Yes it is 'normal' - as long as it goes away when you rest /put feet up - it's called lymph odeama and is just lymph fluid collecting in the tissues - can happen after any leg injury / surgery and can go on for months / longer - I had it quite badly after tearing an Achilles' tendon on left side - now expecting right side to win the swelling race post THR ! Probably a sign that you need to rest more / maybe doing bit too much xx

Hi Sue

I still get knee, calf and foot swelling post op two and a half years post THR. I was told by therapist its a sign of over doing things i need to rest more in between with leg up.

Dear Sue,

warm welcome to this wonderful forum of fellow hippies where we share our personal experiences and stories ...

I echo previous comments ... it is normal and a sign that you might have been overdoing ... at 10 weeks it is easy to do so but remember that you had major surgery and are still early in your recovery -

How are you getting on otherwise? Are you walking with a cane or any other aid? Is the swelling red and painful?

Don't hesitate tocoem back here with any questions or concerns okay?

big warm hug and take care

Hi Sue my foot has been swollen since the op. I've seen 3 different doctors and all they say it's plantar fasciitis. The main thing is to keep your leg elevated and to not over do it. I'm 10 weeks on Wednesday and I feel lazy but I think my foot swells up the more I walk about. If yours is only intermittent it's obvious that you have been doing too much.

Hi.

Thanks so much for your reply I don't walk with any aid and the swelling is not red sometimes there is a dull ache. But think I do just need to rest

more than I am.

I am doing ok other than that.

Best wishes to you and thanks again

Sue
