Total hip replacement

I've had hip pain for almost 10 years, my surgery was last Monday and tomorrow will be a week.

When I I was taken to my room after surgery the pain in my hip was totally gone. I read this site before surgery and it helped me to understand what to expect and relaxed me. Information is provided by the people who have been thru the same thing you will be going thru and everyone heals differently. Keep an open mind and don't set yourself up for failure because you're stronger than you think and will get back to the life you want if you just take it one day at a time and listen to the doctors and your body. I'll be back tomorrow and post again and answer any questions you might have.

Very very true ! Well said!

hi troll ,

Congratulations !!!  and thank you for sharing -

Isn't it amazing how the nasty, grinding OA pain is gone ? Okay, there are other little pains and discomfort showing up during the healing process, but try to remember this moment !!!!

very inspirational and encouraging ...

today will be an interesting day for you but I am sure you will do very well..

big warm hug

Thank you so much for posting this. I'm due for L THR on 28th October and hoping for a good outcome like yours! Hope you continue pain free.

I've heard some people that have great endings and some not so great. I have rarely slept 7-8 hours in a row usually 3-4 is the norm for my adult life. I'm making sure I do what the doctor and therapist tell me and then a little more. The biggest thing I have that helps most is the support of my wife Katy. I couldn't even begin to imagine doing it on my own, her biggest help has been patience and understanding. She needs plenty of both to deal with me on my good days

I thought I would cry reading your post. I know everyone is different but hearing there was no hip pain wow that would be wonderful. I know there will be other pain but I can handle that. Thanks for your post. All the best to you😊😊

Hello Anna, I still fight back the tears when remembering that moment, thanks for the response. I think I will keep writing on this site for me and anyone that might have questions or fears about the program.

Oh please do! I've been in pain for over two years and I'm really looking forward to the op but also quite nervous. Need to think positively and imagine recovering well so your posts are helping a lot. I want my pain free active life back!

Your post was so comforting.  My greatest fear is that I will wake up in  the recovery room in intense pain.  My surgery is tomorrow.  I'm looking forward to relief of the hip pain after so long but I fear that one moment in the recovery room.  I'm having a posterior  with general anesthesia.  I'm taking some copies of previous posts that have made me optimistic so often so that I can read if things are bad.  Everyone is just so supporting.  Whether they have had good or not-so- good experiences they are willing to share and advise and encourage.  This is so great.  And it comes from all parts of the world.  Couldn't do it without this site to rely on.

Hopefully I'll be back here this weekend.

Hi Patricia.

You'll be fine truly you will ,I hade the same

proseedur as your having 12 weeks ago

As well as the Gen An I had a leg block

which ment I had no pain after when I came round in recovery,I remember hearing the machines bleeping and saying to my nurse am I alright?

Yes she said I'll give you some morphing then I was back on ward.Only had paracetamol and

codien from then on

So try not to worry all that pain will be gone.

Think of you lots of love😢😅

To The Troll,

Great handle and great post! And bravo on your first week completed (I am 2 weeks post my 2nd thr, so we are not far off in recovery, although I am finding the 2nd recovery much, much easier).

Please keep posting. I know you will reach many people still needing to be reassured about taking the thr plunge and overcoming some of the bumps along the thr journey.

Good luck and big hugs - even trolls need hugs.

hi patricia,

of course you are nervous. ..it is major surgery. ..

just surrender ...you are asked to take a deep breath, then you wake up and it is done ...

seriously. ..

good luck, darling. .. sending you love and light. ..

I am looking forward to your first post-op post. ..

big warm hug

Linda, Linda, Linda, yes even trolls need hugs you're funny. Well today the home nurse removed the bandage and I have therapy added four or five new exercises and everything went well. This morning before I was wide awake I went to get out of bed like I used to and was nearly out before I knew it or felt any pain, Katy did have to help me out but I'm still in less and less pain every day. The scar is pretty good size and is healing great plus I have a great shark fishing story I'm working on lol. To everyone that has surgery coming soon remember that laxatives are your friend and have a laugh or two even if it's at your own expense. Laughter is the best medicine. Every day gets better and easier. I had my surgery in Bradenton FL and the staff, doctors and everyone involved were top notch.

Oh yes - thank goodness for humour!

A little known but not-so-uncommon side effect of pregabalin is loss of bladder control. It is not great to learn this week one post-thr, let me tell you. At first, the diagnosis was a UTI. But results came back nunh uh.

At first I kept a stack of undies and pads on the shelf near the toilet with kleenex, but soon - you guessed it, my husband brought me diapers (okay depends), Huggies' baby wipes and and a diaper pail. Luckily he was already on the other end of speed dial as the invasion of pillows left little room and he has been known to sleep through tanks rolling in right next to his hootch in training..

We've had many laughs over recent weeks - thank goodness - 'cause sitting on the raised toilet seat, feet dangling, undies and nightie dripping was just not that much fun and not so attractive either.

My advice from thr #1 - be patient, do exercise and watch out for restricted activities but most important - listen to your body. If you are tired have a wee nap . Trolls need naps too!😄

Take care. I can't wait to hear some Troll Tales.

Hi Patricia, I hope that all went well with your surgery, I'm sure that you won't feel like going on the site and comment today I know that it was several days before I I did. Keep in mind mind that you have had major surgery and your doctors want you you to get better as quickly as as possible. They work for you and so does the staff at the hospital so if you're in pain they have just the thing for for you. They will wake you up to see that you're alright and get your vitals and give meds, take them. Rest when you can and do the work it will pay off for you and the pain will be going away a little bit every day sometimes by the hour. I'll keep checking back hoping to see a wonderful post soon.

I forgot to tell that my wife and I were going on a vacation to France on Aug 3rd and my surgery was scheduled for Aug 22 just6 days after our return. My 2nd pre op appointment was Aug 2 and they found out I was diabetic and wanted me to cancel our vacation, I wasn't going to tell my wife that and we went with a prescription for diabetes and tramadol for pain. I couldn't do alot and just relaxed and enjoyed the view of the southern end of the French Alps. It was exactly what I needed. Surgery was postponed until September 26. Got my blood sugar under control all due to my wife Katy finding great recipes that were both filling and delicious, the bonus was I dropped 27 pounds and felt ready. I knew that my wife would be supportive and do everything she could to make it easy for me because that's just who she is. Everyone else first then our dogs then her. She is my whole world, the first thing I see and think of when I wake and the last thing I see and think of when I go to sleep. For me it's easy because of her. A little pain now is a great trade for a happy fulfilling life from here on out. I love you once, I love you twice, I love you more than red beans and rice.

Glad you took the trip - the grandeur of the Alps had to be therapeutic.

As for the rest of your post ... beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. And it captures my feelings about my hubby (aka Nurse Ratched, aka Hottie depending on the time of day), so well.

Thank you for your most excellent posts Troll and your willingness to share private emotional thoughts. Who knew that trolls were so deeply passionate. But perhaps this is only true of The Troll.

Linda

You might not believe this but I call my wife nurse cratchet too!

That's rich, what are the odds ? It's actually easy to be so open when you're unknown.

I'll let you in on a little secret....real trolls eat quiche lol. Did you have your surgery in the states ?

Rich indeed!

Re quiche - I wonder if you might be teasing me a little. I have it on very good authority that trolls are extremely allergic to all dairy products! You might have gotten me with fried mushrooms with a dash of garlic and red wine ...

I had my surgery here in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. I am thinking of writing my surgeon to tell him how different this experience has been than my first - so good this time. It is extraordinary - my husband and I figure that I am several weeks ahead of last time! 😀
