I have thirteen until this rather unexpected surgery. My history: Total left hip in 3/2014. Heterotropic Ossification removal in 2015 and 2016. Partial revision (cup liner and ball) 10/17 and Severe Staph infection removal in January. Now for the total "rip out". My question is: What kind of pain will I be dealing with (both immediate and recovery)? How hard is it to get around with the spacer in and no "real" hip? If anyone could provide advice on this, I would be grateful.
My mother went through the “no hip” for a few months due to infection. She had her shoe built up. Her surgeon told us that in the old days of hips some woman in a similar situation climbed mountains with no hip! Could be anecdotal of course.
Hi,
I have heard of people futting their full weight on the spacer but I couldn't.
At the beginning it was very sore. Lifting the leg in and out of bed was uncomfortable, standing up etc. But Walking with crutches was OK.
The pain eased over a couple of weeks and I got about OK. I did try my stationary bike (not a good idea) exercising in a pool (OK but be careful as you go into the shallow end or you put too much weight on it) and walking (I did quite a lot of walking. I did drive a bit (5 mins up the road) but probably shouldn't have.
I had the spacer for 5 months. Getting a 'proper' hip was great - no pain to speak of.
I'm now 9 1/2 months on and although I limp a bit I do most things and am planning to cycle from Newbury to Bristol on Monday 70 miles to celebrate my 70th birthday.
I hope your recovery is as successful
Mike
