Total knee replacement.

I had TKR 12 days ago. I have never had so much pain. I usually have quite a high pain threshold but this pain tips any I have ever had. I feel like I have a elephant leg. Just found this forum and it is good to know it's not just me suffering like this. I feel that I have been sent home and that's it. Found some usefull tips on the sight. My question is there has been no mention of follow up foR for my knee. I have to go to have my stitches out to morrow and not due to see specialist for another 4 to 5 weeks. when did other people start OR and did they have to arrange it themselves.

Because I had my op in another county...couldn't travel 40miles for physio...GP arranged at local hospital..went once for assesment then physio discharged me n said I was doing fine....not helpful at all!

I said to my husband 3 wks post op I would rather gone n had triplets with no pain relief than pain from this op..at least once it's over the pain eases!

It's all to do with nerve pain where they been cut in op...horrendous ...does gradually improve but no one tells you extent of it.....only someone who has had op understands!it's why this forum is good as we all have experienced it....hang in there x

Thanks for your reply. I will speak to my doctor. I feel like that I was rushed out with there's your medication now go home and get on with it. Just found out now that I have to go for a scan as I may have a blood clot. I had phoned the hospital 2 days after release and they had said you probably have done too much just rest. Eventually went to doctors who took a blood sample and she's phoned first thing this morning and she is aranging this for me. I'm going to chase physio up with my doctor are what hhappens.

Hope it all goes well x

Hi!

Stick with this site and the support that you get from all over the world will help you get through😄👍I discovered this site when I had my first TKR in October 2014 and was in terrible pain and awake in the early hours of the morning! Just had my second TKR (4weeks ago today) & completely understand what you're going through, although friends, family etc never do!

Have you got exercises to do and physio arranged? Do you use ice packs, rest, elevate and take pain killers regularly? Invest in some Bio oil or similar to massage the scar and area when everything has healed up.

Try to keep cheerful and you'll find the everyone on this site is very helpful and supportive.

Take care Glenda😄

HI i think i know how you feel mine was the most painfull thing ive had stick with the pain meds and try ice packs my tkr took about six weeks before the pain starts to calm down i think its a long haul before you get a nights sleep try and relax and put your thoughts in another place good luck ps you also seem to get a lot of other pain around the joint ie calf and thigh muscle and keep at the exersizes

witch are painfull but do get a bit easyer with time

Thinking of you & fingers crossed that all is well with the test results😄👍

Hi Glenda thanks for your reply. No physio arranged I'm chasing that up.I am doing excersices to do which I am doing. Will try the ice packs and elevate the leg. I am taking my pain killers. I just felt that i was thrown out after 3 days and that was it. Trying to get comfy to sleep is a nightmare sleeping at the most 2 hours 3 if lucky. I have been a bit better last 2 days. Hate sleeping on my back going to try my side tonight. I am having my clips out on Wednesday so will take your advice about Bio oil. Will be glad when pain and swelling recedes. Feel like elephant man. Never mind 50 shades of grey I am 50 shades of red blue purple you name it. Feel like leg will never be the same. Thanks again.

Thanks Alan trying to think of a nice holiday when it's better hopefully it will be all worth it.

Thanks sure it wil.

Life will get better I promise but it takes a long time-probably 6/7 months with my first knee but pain subsides week by week so stick with it! Make sure that you ask about the physio as you should be offered some although it varies from area to area in the UK (as I guess that's where you are? I'm in Buckinghamshire) When they took my clips out the nurse stuck steri strips on and another dressing in case the little staple holes bled and I was instructed to rub the oil in when it was all healed. Give it a good massage as it helps break down the scar tissue and moves the fluid so the swelling reduces. Take care😄

I'm in Bradford say no more.!

Hi Pauline, I too am on my 12th post op day, Defo not really prepared for the pain, and lack of sleep, and the constant  drip of my own voice to poor hubby, can you? Will you? Have you? And so it goes on. I too have had no follow up at this stage I.e. Physio appointment, just home with a sheet of exercises, which I have religiously stuck to, screamed at em, sometimes with frustration, or pain. Then there's the psychological effect, mind games, chewing on thoughts of, will I get over this, when am I going to walk without 2 crutches, life I thought was already on hold prior to this, and was really looking forward to a nice holiday post op, My pain threshold is I believe high, but this is a different ball game. Sometimes think I can see a glimmer, bent to pick something up off floor, no AIDS, just did it automatically, desperately trying to leg raise, the pain of that, and pushing down on the rolled up towel really is something else! My staples are out on Wednesday, I've already seen the wound, had to change dressing, as thought a bit of water was in there, give me a rag to bite on LOL I'm probably one of the most impatient people ever, and love to keep house, it's my hobby (saddo) everyone knows this, and so received lectures on don't overdo it we know you, there's about as much chance as 'overdoing it.' As me running a 10 mile marathon today.ive already bought my bio oil, working on the bend, and just generally trying to get this all time consuming programme off the ground daily. Thank God for this site, most post ops are rest and you'll get over it, this is 'I know you've had your leg sawn in bits' but hey no rest you've got to be up and at em or you'll seize up! Mentally I can still laugh, but underneath bricking it, in case I don't get walking without AIDS' that's the real reason I had it done in the first place, not wanting to run marathons, but just to stroll out, without a crutch would be flipping great. Good luck I'll watch your postings, and torture chamber here I come!

Good morning You are all saying exactly what I am experiencing ( and Glenda, my op was 4 weeks ago today, too). The pain is horrendous but it's the feeling of abandonment that makes it so hard to bear. I really feel I've been chucked onto a scrap heap marked 'another one done, where's the next, box ticked' and left there to rot. Sorry for moaning but it's how it is. I even dreamed yesterday that my husband left me because I was a failure at rehab!!! Woke up sobbing.....it would be funny if it weren't so painful, miserable and depressing.

Do you think I should copy this post to someone in authority? Would they carry on as they do, if they knew how we all felt????

Sorry, bad day today

It's a long hard road..one at times u loose despair of n think why did I put myself thru this? I sadly have to repeat it again as implant loosened....am dreading the repeat of no sleep n the pain...my revision op is apparently longer n more difficult n recovery longer n happens in two days!!

Has anyone else on here undergone a revision?would appreciate some feedback x

Wish I had known BT this site when I had mine done as I too felt the same especially in the night awake n crying with despair x

It takes at least 3 mths for things to settle down to a lower level of discomfort..you just have to take constant Meds to cope with it n don't miss them as you will struggle.

Anytime you want to chat..message me I too have to repeat it again this week as mine has failed!! ...only someone who has this knows how u feel x

Tiger, I could not agree more. I was typing my post as you were doing yours, and yours is much more expressive of how I feel.

As you say, I thought 'life being on hold' was waiting for the op.....now I know I can say goodbye to much of 2016, even if all goes well....

Like you I hate hearing the drip, drip of my own voice asking for help. I'm just not used to it, I am usually the one helping......

I am tempted to give up on goals like 'walk 50 yards' etc. I just want to sleep, rest, get better and have a holiday......I had no idea how long it would take before I could do those things

Thats true. You just lay awake and think about it. I was just looking on the internet and found it. Helps a lot to speak to people that have been there and no the problems. Hope all goes well for your Op. I will let you know how my scan goes. Take care.

Hilary, that's so kind of you, especially as you have your revision this week. I will be thinking of you...and feel free to message me too if you'd like.

wishing you all the best xx

Just read your post made me smile knowing its not just me feeling this way. Exactly the same for me sick of hearing myself moan. Tell me about the towel excersise ouch.! Never felt so much pain. Not seen mycwound yet not looking forward to it. At the moment wished I had never had it done. Speaking to you all on the site as helped a great deal knowing that it's not just me. Going to be more assertive and make sure I get all the physio and help I need. Onwards and upwards and be more positive.
