Didn't have pain behind my knee until about 12 weeks post TKR. Those muscles are so tight now it's hard to start walking after sitting, but once I get going it's fine.
I've increased my stretching in that area and it is helping but the recovery is so slow.
I'm 7 weeks and starting to walk well but I do get that tightness behind the knee and a pain on the outside where the tendon joins which seems to restrict bending past 90. Will ask PT about it next week and respond if anything useful comes out of it.
Recovery is slow, but most times it's good to ice behind and on top of the knee. All you can do is continue to exercise and take pain meds to control the pain enough so you do exercise fully without overdoing it. Without pain meds you won't likely push hard enough to improve
The only thing that helps is ice behind the knee and stay off of it . So people say it's the weather. When I think about it, before and during the rain it hurts. This didn't happen when I had my other knee done.
thanks so much, I appreciate you checking into it.
I live in Southern California, What's rain??
We don't really have weather, just warm. Hot and oh my GOD!!
Ice seems to aggravate it but that's my Fibromyalgia! I know I'm on it too much but that's my life...go. go go. I've increased my stretching in that area and it's helping
Thanks. My doc did say to do the exercises for the rest of my life. Right now the pain so bad I'm sick on my stomach . I have been walking around trying to take care of chores of the day but even when I rest it's does not help.
I don't tolerate the pain meds either and have to take a dose of anti-nausea at the same time, and snack on crackers or fruit about mid-way through the medication cycle, since an empty stomach is more likely to be nauseous. I was told no housework for three months. Can you hire some help?
No I can't hire. I do a little at a time of what needs to be done.
Patty, I had that at 7 weeks and still do sometime and I am 6 months now. Be sure to ice top and bottom of leg at same time while elevating. Make sure you take an hour 2 times a day and rest, ice and elevate with leg above heart. This is extra rest besides any you are doing after exercises, or being up and about. If this does not elevate some of the swelling then try finding a way to lay where you can put you leg up on the wall. I have my bed next to wall and still do this for 20 minutes before going to bed at night. Don't know if it will help you but worked for me. I understand the swelling makes the throbbing intense.
Right now your job is to heal and take care of your leg. The house will wait....I know it's hard, but take care of you.

Pam,
thank you so much for your input. I realize everyone is different in healing but I was really getting worried about this. I thought I did something to mess it up. Good luck to you and your new knee. God bless you!
Hi yes in the back of my knee were you bend your leg hurts me also. I go to PT and the therapist said it's the muscle area which is weak. Just excerise it as much as possible. Very sore in the back I also use biofrezze to rub my knee and the back of the knee. Feel better.

I'm about 7 weeks TKR and have a little swelling and lots of pain in the back of my knee. My PT says to stretch my leg- this seems to help. I also ice and keep my leg up.
Wow, I hope all goes well. I wasn't going to have mine done that close together, I was too afraid, lol thanks for your response. I have you in my prayers
im three months Post and like others that have commented ice, lots of ice and elevation. Your body has been through a lot and 7 weeks really is still very very early. Lots of rest...my knee quit swelling at about 10 -12 weeks but it still is stiff if I sit to long. I'm doing PT three times a week. I take Celebrex twice a day and Tylenol for discomfort. The pain is much better as the soft tissue heals. Some days all I would do after PT is ice all afternoon. Keep moving and working hard in PT. best of luck
