Total right knee replacemen

Hey everyone! Had the replacement on Monday and I'm going home tomorrow. Pretty painful which I expected....my one question. Has anyone ever developed blisters

Around the bandage? I hit the post button too soon!!!

I did! But i didnt notice it until a week later!

Sorry no info but best wishes and prayers for you!

Blisters? Maybe you are allergic to something. Have the nurse look at it

Yes I had 3 big blisters and 4 small ones.  When the nurse took my dressing of she noticed them.  Said a rew other people had same and put it down to shock to the system. They were painful but took about a week to burst.  I had to see my local nurse to keep an eye on them.

Did mean to say my blisters were after I had a righ total hip replcement

This forum is for Hips, not knees...??

Yes it is, I had my hip done on 4/5/16. I prefer this board to the knee board and a lot of people have the same issues!

This is a problem usually associated with people pre-stretching fabric based dressings at the point of application in theatre. They think that they are helping, but what they are doing is robbing the dressing of its ability stretch with normal post-operative swelling. As a result the dressing becomes tight causing skin shearing and blisters.

If you have a fabric type dressing this is the most likely cause. Please educate your surgical team!

Hi Lizard.  I had a LTHR on June 17. When the dressing was removed 2.5 weeks later, it was obvious that I had a bad skin reaction to the dressing.  Mine had blisters but it was more like a burn all around the side and top of the dressing.  Probably at least 12" of burn.  It has been soooo painful -- the most painful part of my recovery.  I saw my surgeon yesterday and he said he had seen that kind of reaction only once before -- and he has done hundreds of hip replacements!   It will probably leave my skin discoloured (not a tragedy -- I'm not showing my bum off very often any more!).  After about 5 days I was prescribed a cortisone cream and that has helped a bit.

I hope your blisters clear up soon and aren't too painful.

Leslie

As always, thanks for the comments. Still in the hospital, hoping to go home today. My iron is low which explains my fatigue. I was taking vitamin c and iron for weeks before the surgery. The doc here stopped it, being non essential. 😡 They don't want to do a transfusion due to an infection risk!

Good luck, Liz.  Hope they don't have to do a transfusion but it does sound like you are getting good care.   Blood tests showed I was low in iron about a year before surgery.  It has been increasing slowly with me taking iron but still not normal.  I had to stop taking it a week before surgery too.  Keep us posted....hope you're home soon.    Leslie
