Can anyone give me some advice On 20mg prednisolone for pmr and gca. I take pred in morning after breakfast. We are going to new Zealand from UK to see our family. We fly from Heathrow to LA, 4 hrs there, then onto Auckland. Not sure about when i take my pred as my body will not know what time it is. My GP has not given me any advice so i know how helpful and knowledgeable you all are so i decided to turn to you lovely people thankyou
What all of us in Europe who travel long haul semi-regularly do for travelling east to west, the long day of travel, is to take our normal dose the day we travel, whatever time that is, and then about 22 hours later take an extra proportional dose to take us to the same time of day at our destination. For example, leaving the UK for Vancouver I would take my normal dose in the morning and then 22-ish hours later would take another dose of about 1/3 my daily dose (the time difference is 8 hours) to take me through until the next morning when the next day’s dose would be due. Then, while away, I would take my usual dose at the same time as usual in the morning. I only do this for pred, anything else I take at UK time, wherever I am, but ordinary pred does need to be taken in the morning as usual and no gap left - or you risk a flare, the last thing you want on holiday.
Coming back on the red-eye flights I would take my dose as normal and then 24 hours later - by which time you are usually home.
Does that make sense?
PS - when are you going? Where to? Have a lovely time. I’d love to go to NZ! We have several members in NZ on the HealthUnlocked forum as well as a few UK members with family there.
Thank you Susan for the question and Eileen , as ever, for the answer. I am off to California on Monday and was wondering how to manage my pred. Last time I struggled as didn’t think and just used local time so was 8 hours late taking the meds with obvious difficulties. Many thanks.
hi Jillian…where in California are you coming to?
San Diego. Where are you? I hope not near the fires?
PPS - coming home, if the pred is due before 24 hours, take it, don’t wait…
hi…in the San Francisco bay area…bout 75m south of the fires. it’s been horrible and stressful for weeks! my health has really suffered!
Oh gosh poor you! How stressful. On our first visit in 2008 we experienced fires near the city and couldn’t leave S.D. for the week we were there- but nothing compared to this. The only positive though is that when we are struggling- it is nothing compared to what the poor people are suffering as a result of these awful fires. It puts things into proportions doesn’t it?
AMEN…it certainly does!
my daughter’s best friend just lost her house in the fires, burned to the ground…so it has (indirectly) affected my family.
so very sad!
Eileen has explained it well.
The only thing I have to add is a hint someone gave me on this site. Take some Rescue Remedy with you. I took 2 before take off, then one every 4 hours while flying. I had the best long haul flights I have had in years. I slept well and did not suffer any jet lag at all, which I had been dong in recent years.
I do hope we put on some good summer weather for you down here. This week tho, we are having an icy winter blast. Summer always seems to come a little later now , than when I was a child.
Which part of NZ are you going too ?
Thankyou everyone for your helpful replies. It will be 07.00 when we arrive in Auckland so I will have something to eat and take the daily pred then.
We have 2 weeks touring around the south island, then up to the north island to spend 3 weeks with our daughter and family and then 2 weeks slowly making our way back up to Auckland.
Cant wait to get away from the cold and damp and doctors appointments, really need the break.
Hopefully my CRP levels will have reduced so that I can pack my running kit!
Happy christmas to everyone xx
Funny isn’t it - winter here in the Alps seems to be coming later! The heaviest snow the last couple of years has been late March and even later - by which time it is soggy and no use to man nor beast in a ski resort!
It was snowing here in England on Wednesday to my horror.
Apparently it has been snowing all over the region today - except here! But pretty high up really and I think it looks patchy. Should be driving through Cortina d’Ampezzo on Monday - but we’ll wait and see if it snows there. The long way round is so low it doesn’t snow but the road is awful - with a 45mph speed limit for miles and miles!!!
I haven’t planted all my bulbs yet!
Better get a wriggle on then!!!
It did snow here a few days ago, high up. Mind you we would love to have one white Christmas here, that would really be something. I am off to travel through Cortina d’Ampesso on the internet now to see what I am missing. I hope it is wonderful scenery to enjoy at such a slow pace.
While you are at it - google dolomiti superski webcams - loads of lovely views this year, they must have spent a fortune on new cameras! I live at the bottom of the one called Kronplatz…
Wow ! Amazing pictures with the night lights on.
