I have genital warts on my penis and pubic area that have been diagnosed as being caused by HPV. They started appearing around February (just a couple) but in the past month or so really blew up suddenly and now there’s a decent sized patch of warts, about 8 or so. I last had sex with the person I’m assuming I contracted it from in early December and have not had sex since. This person (female, age 25) recently tested negative for HPV and all other STIs. She got a pap smear. She is the only person I’ve had sex with in the past 5 years. This led me to believe it may be a yeast infection instead, although it is not typical of the red rash and flaking typical of a male genital yeast infection. Still, I started applying clotrimazole antifungal ointment to the warts, and they started to subside. Soon after, I saw a doctor again but the warts were almost not visible at that point, but based of what I told the doc, she also diagnosed it as HPV.
I have been prescribed podofilox gel to remove the warts, although it doesn’t seem to be very effective and mostly just burns my skin off. The antifungal ointment seemed to be way more effective. The warts even started to return to their prior appearance once I stopped using the clotrimazole.
So what do I have? Is is possible for male yeast infections to resemble genital warts caused by HPV?
Although my past partner’s HPV pap smear test was negative, is it still possible she has it? She has said she has some “small white bumps” on her inner thigh near her vagina. I sent her a picture of my warts so she could compare them to hers and she said they look similar, just smaller than mine. I now have a small patch of new warts growing on my right side inner thigh near my scrotum that started appearing about a week ago.
Is my case typical of HPV warts? Aren’t break-outs supposed to last just a few weeks? Not several months?
