Treatment info for Blepharitis

Has anyone found treatment info specifically for Blepharitis? I'm told the same old things like "scrub with baby shampoo" and I'm not getting any better.

I'm frustrated and hope that some doctor somewhere has studied this terrible condition - and just want to find the answers!

Thank you,

Oliver, London

Hello Oliver,

I had the same experience as you did and found 2 guides that gave me relief!

Three different ophthalmologists diagnosed me with Blepharitis and prescribed the usual treatment regimen including eyelid scrubs, steroid drops, etc.

Unfortunately, it only got worse over the years. My eyes were always red - my co-workers probably thought I was drinking or smoking (I wasn’t). Dark bags under my eyes made me look 20 years older than I was, it was terrible.

After suffering for five years I decided to read everything that I could find on Blepharitis and found two guides that changed my life! The first was an ebook written by Dr. Banerji called “How to treat Blepharitis & Eye Allergies and live symptom free”. The second was written by Dr. Latkany on dry eyes.

After reading these two books, I actually made an appointment in NYC to see Dr. Latkany. It turns out that while my symptoms were that of Blepharitis, eye allergies was the primary cause and was contributing to my problem. I then tackled my eye allergies with the help of an allergist and an allergy shot regimen, and after six months am finally living symptom free!

Since everyone is a little different, it is important to find comprehensive information like this, and work with your eye doctor to figure out what works for you and what doesn't.

I truly wish the same relief that I have achieved for everyone that reads this posting.

Blessings to all,

Christine A, Florida.

Hiya,

I've suffered from Blepharitis for about 7-8months now and i've been to the eye hospital several times as well as my gp and they do nothing but fob me off with creams and eye drops.

I've taken it into my own hands now. i've managed to control the itchy eyes with allergy drops called Opatanol which I find do help quite a bit.

After using different ointments and steriod creams I came across a brand called Eucerin. I'm using they're Aquaporin Active moisturising eye cream and it doesn't contain any perfume or alcohol. It's the only cream apart from the steriod cream (which is not good for the skin) that has actually helped. My eyelids aren't dry at all its really moisturising.

the only problem I have now is the swelling but the dryness has completely gone. i've been told to freeze a tea spoon over night and then place it over my eyes every morning to help reduce the swelling. I haven't tried it as of yet but will let you know how I get on.

Hope this helps.

Hello

i was diagnosed with blepharitis back in august 2012 i finally found help using sterile eye lid wipes then after a month they stope'd working now i have been antibiotics for nearly a month no improvement and steroid drops for a week no improvement as well ive taking FML Steroid drops before and they worked for a week and then stope'd working and i clean my eye lids twice a day and take omega 3 and use warm compression no luck haven't felt any relief for at least 3 months now any suggestions?

anything would be really appreciated

thanks Alex

A friend and I have gotten rid of Blepharitis. She found the ingredient t in an Avon Facial Scrub. (Not available now) so I looked on the internet where I could find it in something else. Her Blepharitis had traveled up her eyelids.

It is in WET ONES. The ingredient is Benzethonium Chloride.

I tore each one into 8 pieces and used 2 on each lid 4 times a day for a week or two then went down to 3 times a day. The last 2 months I used it 2 times a day. If I felt an itch after that I used one on it. Happened once or twice.

Three doctors couldn't find it in my eyes.

It is da bacterial infection in the root of the eyelashes. That is why it takes 3-4 months to get rid of it.

It is possible that antibiotics could work if put directly on the eyelashes 4 times a day. It would have to be for months and cost $2,000 to $3,000. I was told to put them in my eye and didn't help that much. The bottle cost $137.00 for a tiny bottle.

The WET ONES cost about $20.00 for the cure. Hope this helps someone to get relief.

Hi,

I have had blepharitis for over a year and I've been miserable. I've been to so many doctor's; I find Opthamologists don't provide as much help as Dermotologists.

I started with eyelid wips and baby shampoo but it doesn't do anything. It was brutal at the beginning but now I can actually get through my day. I have better days and some worse days. It started with a chilazion and now styes here and there.

I now use LaRoche Posay Efficlar H mouse. I use it twice a day with warm compress and that is the only thing that helps. When I start using it, my eye act up all over again and takes several days to calm down.

I recently read that there is a treatment, IPL, Intense Pulse Light, which is designed specifically for dry eyes. There is also antibiotics but I want to avoid medication and doctor's offices so I will continue to figure it out on my own.

At the same time, I was told I have rocesea which is linked to blepharitis. I will be doing rocesea on my face in hopes it will somehow help my eyelids.

It so frustrating and it's hard to explain to family and friends because they don't know what it is and no one else I know has it. I just want to go back to my normal skin.

Best of luck.

Victoria

*Correction to my post: when I stop using LaRoche Posay, my eyes act up all over again.

Hi, I can relate as I was miserable. I tried the antibiotics 3 times. I realized that the infection is in the roots of the eyelashes and that is why it takes so long to get rid of it.

The wipes I used are the WET ONES in the red box and have Benzethonium Chloride in them. I no longer have Blepharitis. The other person who is the one who found the medicine that worked is my daughter's mother-in-law. Her Blepharitis was moving up her eyelids. She used an Avon Facial Scrub and it was clearing it up. I tried to buy it and they were out of it. I looked on line to see what I could buy that had Benzethonium Chlkoride in it. I realized I had this item in my home and I carry it in my purse.

I used them by tearing each one into 8 pieces and doing each eyelash area twice--4 times a day for a week or more. Then as I was feeling better I went down to 3 times a day. The last 2 months I did it only 2 times a day. I realized that I could have used it 3 times a day and probably cut down one month. Hindsight is always better.

There is a Dr. who is interested in it. He asked me if I rinsed my eyes after using them and I said no I did not.

This is a cheap cure and you can research Benzethonium Chloride on the enternet. Two of us no longer have this horrible itching.

I did use antibiotics 3 times. I told the Dr. after I had gotten rid of it that the antibiotic should have been put on the eyelashes instead of in the eyes. That would probably clear it up too but would be so costly for it takes months not 10 days.

They sent this information to other sights and said it went viral. I don't do face book or tweet. I learned how to blog as the my Dr. didn't seem interested in the cure. I know of no other way to let people know they don't have to suffer.

I hope you give it a try as you will feel the difference in a couple of weeks. Please let me know if you are getting results.

Lynda

Yeah I can relate i was diagnosed with blepharitis over a year ago and have had an awful flare up for going on 9 months now! been on steroid drops antibiotics and anti allergy eye drops with no success yet and the hot compressions don't seem to work. ive brought steam googles they just seem to get rid of some of the oil i know that argan oil has helped a lot of people and castor oil although i wouldn't recommend castor oil very risky going to see my new eye doctor on friday so hopefully a miracle will happen. thanks for the advice i will try wet ones and see what result i get, please let me know if any of you get good results from relief of Blepharitis

Alex

Hi Alex,

Remember the infection is in the roots of the eyelashes. Putting drops in the eyes does hardly anything.

I told the Dr. that they should be applied to the eyelashes. Who can afford to use drops for 3 months straight. I paid for my last bottle of eye drops and it was $137.00 and with Insurance it was a $35.00 co-pay.

The bottle was so small. You would have to have at least 2 a week or more. Imagine doing that for say 3 months. It may work though, if put on the eyelashes.

The WET ONES are the ones in the red box. Be sure what you use has Benzethonium Chlkoride in it. It gives relief really fast but does take 3-4 months. You could shave off one month by doing it 3 times a day instead of dropping to 2 times a day. I did it because I felt so much better and they were not bothering me. In hindsight, I could have saved a month. You can't imagine the relief you get from doing this. It has been about 7 months now and no Blepharitis for me or my friend. Hope you get the same relief soon.

Lynda

hi Lynda,

May I know where can I get benzethonium chloride? I am currently living in singapore and have not heard of this product. how helpful is this product? are you still maintaining a lid routine like warm compress, lid scrub etc?

ive been diagnosed with blepharitis since 3 years ago and have been applying warm compress, use lid care wipes daily but it isnt helping at all..

can you suggest me a way to keep blepharitis under control?

Thanks alot!!

Dear Joanne,

I no longer have Blepharitis. There is a cure.

Benzethonium Chloride is the medicine in the products that get rid of Blepharitis. It is found in the antibacterial hand wipes known as WET ONES. It comes in a red box. WALMART or drug stores or grocery stores here carry it. I checked on the internet to find what products Benzethonium Chloride was in.

You may have to order from a drug store or Walmart on line if you can't get it there.

Let me explain how I got rid of it. I tore each hand wipe into 8 pieces and rubbed each eyelash are twice-4 times a day to start. After a week or two I went down to 3 times a day. After a month I went down to 2 times a day for several months. This is an infection in the roots of the eyelashes. Putting medicine in the eye doesn't do much. I tried 3 times with antibiotics. Did nothing.

When a friend said she got rid of it I jumped on it right away. She had it going up her eyelids.

Two people have gotten rid of this horrible itching. It is not a hit and miss thing. I kept at it for 3-4 months and it is gone.

The 3 Dr.'s who looked into my eyes tried to find it and couldn't. One was the Dr. who gave me the prescriptions for antibiotics and diagnosed the Blepharitis.

This is not just a temporary relief thing I am writing blogging about. I learned how to blog to try to help others learn about the way to get rid of this infection in the eye lashes. The Dr.'s didn't seem to be interested in a cure.

I did blog on one Dr.'s comment and he was interested and wanted to know if I washed my eyes off after using the wipes. I told him no I did not.

There is no need to suffer with this when there is a cure. Please be diligent and work at it for the 3-4 months. You do start to feel better. When I was done it itched once or twice and I used the wipes and it was gone.

Relief is not far way,

Lynda

Hi, My symptoms seem to be a bit different from every one else but just as depressing.

I've been going to our eye hospital every 3 months for about 3 years now and no change. I was told it was Blepharitis at the beginning and told all about the lid hygiene which I fathfully followed....no luck.

One of my biggest problems is that my eyes are running....not just watering, so bad that people have stopped me in the street and asked what is wrong {they think I'm crying} So cant keep makeup on, cant even put any eye make up on. One of the last letters to my GP said Bilateral epiphora secondary to perennial rhinitis!!!!

I've had drops, cream you name it and nothing has helped....the main thing he prescribed at the beginning was a nose spray? Vaseline helps my eyelids when they are itchy but the tears are the main thing with me.

Anyone else come across anything like this

Eileen

Does anyone else wear mascara or do you avoid using it because of blepharitis?

Lynda: Benzethonium Chloride - I did some research on that and that's the ingredient that is found in antiseptic hand wipes, I didn't know that was safe to use on your eyes. Does the wetness get into your eyes? I'd be afraid it would cause damage to the eyes since it's not specifically designed for eye use. However, I'm very interested to learn more.

Thank you!

Victoria

Hi Eileen,

I've done a lot of research and what you have doesn't sound like blepharitis. Bleph is due to dry eyes and if you have running eyes all the time, I don't suspect it the products we recommend will help. However, it is due to block ducts so the warm compress may help. I am going to purchase the Eye Bag that was referred on here. You use it as warm compress for 10 minutes 2x a day...I can't imagine that wouldn't open some ducts.

I found this page for you: I hope it's helpful.

Victoria,

Benzethonium Chloride is the ingredient in the WET ONES antibacterial hand wipes. This is what I used to get rid of Blepharitis. I had no problems with it hurting my eyes. I used it on the eyelashes not in my eyes. The relief was immense.

My friend got rid of her Blepharitis using a facial scrub from Avon (can't seem to find anymore) that had Benzethonium Chloride in it. When I couldn't find it I looked on line for the products that had Benzethonium Chloride in them. That is how I ended up using the hand wipes.

This infection is in the roots of the eyelashes and that is why it takes a while to get rid of it. A Dr. I blogged on his site asked me if I rinsed after using them and I said "No".

This killed the Blepharitis. There were 3 Dr.'s trying to find it in my eyes. This included the Dr. who diagnosed the Blepharitis.

My friend's Blepharitis was moving up her eyelids and that is why she used a facial scrub. I am so greatful she did.

This makes 2 people using 2 different products that got rid of the Blepharitis. Benzethonium Chloride is the ingredient in both or these products.

Now for the mascara question. Yes you can use mascara but you do not want to infect your eyes over and over again. I threw out a lot of makeup. I bought throw away mascara wands on the internet by the hundreds. You need to buy a new mascara and use 2 throw away wands each time. One for each eye. Never put a used wand in the mascara. Never use one wand on both eyes. There are now mascaras that have small lids with them.

There are throw away cotton (not swabs) applicators. One end is sharp and the other is flat. Drug store is a good place to find them or makeup place. I bought a new dark gray eye shadow (could use black) and used 2 throw away applicators each time and never put a used one into the clean makeup. I used that for eyeliner or shadow.

When you use the WET ONES you need to do it 4 times a day to start for a week or so then go down to 3 times for a month then 2 times a day for 2 months. After that my eyes only itched once or twice and I used the wipes a time or two more and the Blepharitis was gone.

I have no ill affects from using these wipes and I have been checked out by 3 Dr.'s trying to find it in my eyes. I am sure they would have noticed if there was damage to my eyelashes. They told me it would come back. I told them it has been 4-5 months. Now it has been 6-7 months since it has been gone.

This is a simple cure the same as antibiotics are now the cure for ulcers. This is not a joke, I am a Grandmother and I am trying to get relief to people because it nearly drove me crazy. If one or two people get rid of it, my time will not have been wasted.

I hope you find the relief that I did.

Lynda

Hi Thank you both for the links.....I will really study them later.

Why I say blepharatis is the fact that the consultant gave me a list on eye hygiene titled Blepharitis

Its not blocked tear ducts apparently its something to do with nasal passages being narrow and tears over flowing because of that but all this Doc does is give me the same nose spray each time.

I do the hygiene thingy but that and the spray do no good whatsoever.

Its very depressing.....Tears streaming down your cheeks all the time....inside outside using computer not using computer et Cant keep make up on cant put eye make up on.

I've got arthritis and and spinal problems.....they are chronic as well....but that's n. o problem I can cope with that I just find different ways of doing things and managing it....but this is completely different....leaves me so depressed

Sorry for the moan

eileen

Blepharitis is an infection in the roots of the eyelashes.

It does spread to other areas for example my friend's spread up to her eyelids.

I found that the wipes with Benzethonium Chloride worked for me to get rid of Blepharitis.

I jumped on the fact my friend got rid of it and used something that had the same medicine in it as her facial scrub.

If it was not an infection this medicine would not have worked.

I am beginning to see that a lot of people will be content to wash with baby shampoo. I wasn't. I killed it and I am trying let others know they can get rid of this.

I think your link answer was meant for someone else as it wasn't me but I did want to get back to you.

Wish you well,

Lynda

Having tried all sorts of remedies for this condition, having had this problem for over forty years.

Trying eye creams, warm applications etc, etc and feeling so frustrated with the chronic condition after all these years,

I have found that a teaspoon of Honey and boiled warm water has helped immensely, applied every night, with cotton wool wiping the lid gently and the eye ducts, my eyes lids are not as red and the crusty bits have cleared,

Also the eyes are not so sensitive to light and outside conditions.

This treatment has helped me, i found it by chance reading an article in a national newspaper about a man who had cured his blepharitis with Honey.

Michael

Hi

I'm sorry I'm so late getting back to this.....but lots of things have been going on, like a cancelled hip replacement because of anaemia, etc etc

My eyes....I eventually {after trying to get a 2nd opinion from my GP} Not much luck there.

I went to a hospital with a walk in eye clinic. The doctor I saw there said I had moderately dry eyes. Gave me much stronger eye drops and said they had to be used at least 6 times a day and the usual lacri lube

to put along my lower eye rims and of course don't forget the eye hygiene LOL

I mentioned how dry my lids were and how crusty they were.....he said just used the lacri lube on my

eyelids as well.....that it was a good moisturiser.

I'm trying that and when I got back from that appointment there was a letter waiting for me from the surgery????? It was an appointment with an eye consultant at a different hospital on the 20th Dec???

I checked him out on line and he's from a different health authority although is seeing me at my health

authority. I wouldn't be surprised if he is from the same hospital that the original eye consultant is from

The one that gives me the nose spray each time.

Oh well we'll see what he says.

Sorry for the ramble

Hileena
