I'm currently two weeks post op from getting my syndesmotic screw, plate and pins and I feel physically I'm healing well but emotionally I've completely hit a brick wall.
I was doing really well mentally for the past year or so give or take the odd bad day and now this..
I find myself crying when people even try to interact with me.
My next appointment is in 6 weeks and I was given no ROM exercises but have been doing light self physio anyway as my appointment was incredibly rushed due to having to get my staples out also..
He said I'm healing incredibly well and I honestly feel 6 weeks is far too long away.
I have basically no pain, mild swelling now and surprisingly a lot of flexion..
I'm a student nurse as well as a support worker for two places, I'm really missing being active and being able to drive..
Its refreshing hearing other peoples journeys suffering from similar injuries..
Hi Supersian:
Welcome! It is hard being couch bound/house bound when you are used to a very active and involved life. Plus you are a medical professional. Sitting around is a HUGE adjustment but It DOES get better.
Feel free to write to our group or reach out at any time.
We have been there and/or are there, and we care!
Mary
Hi, SUPERSian! You are not alone. Trimalleoar fracture right ankle 8/14, went on antibiotics, and had surgery 8/25. Still in cast and no weight bearing yet. Had a little breakdown within first month, but feeling very stir crazy and hoping for good news at xray next Tuesday. I bought a knee scooter (with a bssket) and it has been a lifesaver since I hated the crunches. This is a very long journey and hard mentally besides the physical limitation. Hang in there and take care.
hi there,i know what your going through as i had my left ankle fused two years ago.at first it drove me crazy (three months in plaster and about four learning to walk and trust it again)but i addopted the attitude of the british forces S.A.S,in the same way that their injured soldiers re habilitate after being injured baddly in warfare, there are plenty of things online about this but the main ones for me were routine, cleanliness and fitness, just because your legs dont work at mo doesnt meas you cant look after the rest of you i.e weightlifting pressups etc,but the one that made the most difference of all was shaving, washing and eating healthily, sounds like im asking you to suck eggs i know but its supprising how easy it is to reach for the junk food and become lazy,i also made the london bridge out of match sticks, sounds mind numbing i know,im a plasterer by trade and love playing sports so looking at something like this was just plain weird for me,but do you know what....once i got started i didnt want to stop,(it took two years in the end haha),trust me when this is all over you wont even remember half of it and youll hit the ground running, just dont burn yourself out trying to make up for lost time, good luck stay calm, make the most out of the oppertunity to relax and look after yourself properly and you will be fine,i feel for you beleive me but you will get through this, the human body is a wonderfull thing but even through this it needs to take its own time.good luck and just relax
