I have been suffering with this horrificly painful condition for 1 year 6 months.Ive had physiotherapy steroid injection and a few painkillers is anyone here suffering with the same.It has went away however returned with avengence.Really fed up trying everything worked through the pain for 3 weeks my job involves walking 10 + miles per day any info or self help please is appreciated
I know how you feel. My 14 year old daughter has this right now.She also has tried basically everything with no relief. She doesn't go out with friends much, due to she can't walk long distances. She is scheduled in July to have the bursa removed and the inflammation around it taken out, she also is getting her tendon and trochanter bone smoothed out, and reattaching her tendon back to the bone. All the orthopedic surgeons ,chiropractors, and physical therapist that she has seen think this should help. We are hoping for a great outcome because she is miserable with this. If you have tried everything with no relief this might be an option. They told us since it's been so long her bursa and surrounding areas that are inflamed might be too thick and aggravated to go back down. Bursas grow back, so find out the cause to prevent it from returning. They all believe her left glute muscle is weak and not working like it should. She's been doing therapy for months working on getting all her muscles to work the right way, so hopefully she'll have a healthy bursa when it grows back and this problem doesn't start all over. Good luck to you,I hope you find something that works.
I also suffer from T.B. had injection physio and strong pain killers. Reading all the comments on this site it appears nothing works. Its a horrible condition to have and if any one reading this can shed any light on how it can be made easier please help us.
Hello , I feel so bad for you because I suffered with that too . It is an ugly ugly illness that takes total rest for six months to get rid of and I mean total . I finally broke down and did the only sensible thing and that was to get an orthopedic surgeon to do the surgery arthroscopically . Now life is great and I am so happy I did that . It's been six months , since my left hip was done and still doing some physical therapy but only a few minutes a day . Take care and I hope you get some relief. I had tried all the things you're supposed to do , I used to be in nursing . But there is nothing , that really helps except for anti-inflammatories, naturally and total rest or surgery . Good luck to you . Warm regards
Hi please can i ask what surgery did you have. I am due to see my surgeon next week.
Kind regards
They cant do surgery ive had this for 2 years intense physio steroid injections and painkillers unfortunately its not gone it has temporarily calmed to control
When i first had this i was hoping it was my hip bone however its not they say they cant operate however my job involves walking alot 10 miles per day average i cant lose my job due to this ill fight it i hope my next injection is effective i was a fit 3 x per week at the gym 2 x football now i cant run for a bus ill beat it though π€
Sorry annette i thought you were asking me apologies π
Hi Annette, after trying everything there was I had to opt for the surgeries because I had it on both hips . I found an orthopedic surgeon who does it arthroscopically . It's important that you get a good MRI that shows the hip area so he will know how much you need to take care of . For me I just needed debridement and IT band windowing which is very important to prevent future episodes . It is extremely hard to heal trocanteric bursitis alas you absolutely do nothing and rested including not sitting and getting up and down , which is very hard . Find a surgeon who does it arthroscopically because the downtime is very small . I am doing fantastic now good luck to you. Connie
I am so please for you..that you have managed to eradicate this debilitating T.B.
I have seen one orthopaedic surgeon who said he did not do any surgical treatment for it as it did not work and made it worse. I was devistated. I have been dealing with this for years it started 5 years ago i finally could not cope any more 7 months ago and stopped working ( sickness ) . I have asked for a second opinion and see a different surgeon next month.
I also have muscle wastage in both hips and from the buttocks to the femur. As well as tendinitis in both. I am on morpine patches and gabapentin 600mg 3 times a day.
I am from the UK I dont think the procedure you mention is done over here although i will ask when i see him. Thankyou so much for the information you have given me. I wish you all the very best for the future
Annette, I'm so sorry for what you're going through . I have an injured neck and low back and then was in a car accident which caused the bursitis in both hips . I hope you can find an orthopedic surgeon that does the surgery arthroscopically it's a bursectomy with IT band windowing and debridement . They can do that if you don't have too much arthritis in there but still getting those out was the best thing I ever did and then doing physical therapy I'm still working on my left hip and it's been six months but it's doing really well I can sleep on it now just have to do a little more PT . I wish you all the best.
Hi Patricia
I feel for your daughter they say it is common in adolescents especially girls i see my surgeon in August i will be mentioning an op as ive hung around 2 years nearly taking lots of horse pills injections physio etc so thanks kindly π
This is really helpful to hear. I've been in physiotherapy for a long time now and had a bad hip problem for about a year longer than that and it's just not going away. My physiotherapist seems totally stumped so this is really informative because I think my problem is quite similar to your daughter's. I have bursitis from snapping hip at my ITB and weak gluteal muscles that is causing all sorts of problems so I have weak, painful, exhausted legs, a tight and painful lower back, and infflammation and sharp pain from the bursitis. It's a nightmare. The only thing that seems to help at all are high dose turmeric supplements, so you might want to look into it for your daughter. Thanks for your comment.
Hello, I hope this information helps everyone. I had TB ,following a car accident.
Hi also have a bad back and neck and usually TB comes from injuring your hips if you already have herniated and bulging discs or sacroiliac joint dysfunction . Which I had . One of the things that is worth looking into is the damage that steroid injections due to your tendons and bone . I found out it destroys them and I've had 3 on. Neck, 5,on low back and hips . But I will never again . If you read my post I finally got an arthroscopic surgeon to cure the TB.
My brother is a chiropractor who has a large physical therapy side and machines. The best advice I got from another doctor was to rest my hips for six months and do nothing . But that's very hard to do, you have to get up and down from a chair. So that's extremely hard on hips . Getting a walker for a few months from a used store will help also take the pressure off your hips to rest them . If you do get injections work on strengthening your buttocks. Using isometric exercises as you lay on the floor is a good one and just squeeze them and hold for 10 seconds times 10 times . Then repeat twice a day . I am so sorry for what you're going through because I've been through it and it is hell especially the nights.
I have been in physical therapy for nine years 2 to 4 times a week and that's the only way to keep everything strong. And swimming is really really good for your hips and strengthening without putting stress on those tendons and muscles . You can read my other posts as to the action I took but I hope and pray that you find relief and get better soon . There is life after TB . Following my surgeries which were quick but a lot of PT afterwords for four months . Now I can sleep on either side and sleep well and no problems . Physical therapy after the pain has resided is the best advice if you can't find an arthroscopic surgeon who does the surgery . Good luck to everyone. Used to be a nursing years ago and several of my family are doctors and physical therapist . Please research online as much as you can about this and learn from other people. And God bless you all who deal with horrific pain .
Thanks for your reply. She actually did take high doses of turmeric, it had great reviews. She also tried capsaicin cream, unfortunately neither worked for her. She had surgery July 14, they removed her bursa, cleaned up the area, smoothed out her trochanter bone, got rid of the bone spurs, and cleaned up her tendon. She is recovering now and still no weight bearing on that hip, so we will not know yet if it worked until she gets back to walking. We are hoping for a good outcome. I feel terrible for everybody dealing with this as I've seen her suffer with it. Hopefully you can find something that works for you long term.
Hi, what type of doctor do you see to diagnosis this condition? I have been having pain since November 2015. I didnt know what it was or what was causing it. I had an MRI and X-rays. My neuro was going to send me to a pain management doctor for injections in my lower back. (I have HNP in neck, thoracic and lumbar) I looked up the "impression" on my MRI, and that when I found this condition. I am sooo very tired of the pain, esp. at night (as whoever has this knows). I read that this condition "usually fixes itself". Well, as I said, this has been going on since Nov. 2015. I dont want to waste my time having injections in my lower back if they arent going to help with this leg/hip pain. Again, what type of doctor should be seen? Thank you
Hi
My Pysiotherapist was the first to diagnose T.B. The injections are best done under xray into the bursa. I have had the condition 4 years now.
I think you mean ultrasound instead of xray.
If it really is Trochanteric bursitis then in theory it will eventually get better with corticosteroids, icing, rest, and probably some kind of fix be it physio or surgery to correct whatever is causing the bursa to be inflamed. There's probably friction and pressure on the bursa from an overlying tendon or muscle. Bear in mind though that ITB can't really be stretched as its a non elastic tissue.
A lot of cases of TB are actually misdiagnosed though and could really be tendonopathy which can have bursitis as a side effect. It's a weakness or tear in the tendon. I'm pretty certain that it's what I have and I have pain in my lower back at the top of my hip bones. It can be caused by weak gluteal muscles and get worse on increasing exercise level. I started the gym in October so I'm pretty sure that's what's wrong with me. Some days I literally can't walk.
I'm not saying this is what is wrong with anyone, I'm just sharing it as an option because it's important to get the correct diagnosis and I wouldn't have been told this by my physio or gp.
Hello poodle,
I am so sorry for what you're going through. I have very bad neck from a neck surgery several years ago which is causing more problems because it's all metal and herniated and bulging disc in my
Low back. Though after a car accident three years ago I got TB in both hips and it was the most awful time in my life , no sleep for six months pretty much . I know that a rheumatologist is who you're supposed to C-4 that , however I had a pain doctor that finally ordered an MRI of my hips and we found the inflammation and TB . After trying everything I opted for the outpatient surgery . And now just about a year later from my first hip , after having the second one done seven months ago I am doing great . I still have issues with my back and neck but I must warn everyone to stay away from injections if you can . If you research it you will find that they do lasting damage to your tendons and bone that will never go away . Good luck to you . I found the only way to get rid of it naturally is to literally do absolutely nothing for six months and that means getting up and out of the chair even or sitting too much . Lots of ice lots of natural anti-inflammatories . I did that with a walker and after four months I said no way I'm living with this anymore . After doing everything including physical therapy I opted for the arthroscopic bursectomy with IT band windowing end cleaning out all the mess in there , call debridement . I hope you find someone there that can help you with this and good luck to everyone . Having TB in both hips is the worst nightmare . There's no way anyone should have to live like that . Take care and feel better soon .
Kind regards, Connie
