I have acid reflux for a year. Various prazoles and other medication have reduced the severe symptoms but I have a variety of mild to moderate symptoms pretty well all the time. I am now on rabeprazole 10mg 2x a day.
I have been trying a diet of low acid food which may have helped slightly and gives me a little confidence in what I eat. I am working this diet out myself by testing food with ph paper as books and the internet seem very contradictory.
Has any one else had success with this low acid food approach?
Can anyone advise on eating raw veg? eg sugar snap peas, carrot sticks, baby sweetcorn.
If your not seeing results by trying to reduce your stomach acid your problem could be low stomach acid. Symptoms for excess acid and low acid are the same. If you have low acid antacids will make it worse. Try taking digestive enzymes (with betaine hcl in them) with food. This works for me. If I forget to take the enzymes and have a bit of a flare I will use Zantac followed by a couple of dry cream crackers and this settles it down.
Thank you for your reply. I have heard of this and shall do some research. Would you take the enzymes as well as the rebeprazole and then drop off the rabeprazole if things improve?
I'm not a great believer in antacids. Th enzymes. If this doesn't happen the un digested food gasses off in the small bowel causeing bloating pain and bile reflux. Google lowoxalate.info. This explains the leaky gut syndrome which can be complicated by un digested food. When I took proscribed antacids it made my problem worse. I know that if I forget to take my enzymes the resultant bloating causes bile reflux which causes horrendous belching, trapped wind, acid reflux. When this happens I take a Zantac to stop the stomach acid reacting with the bile(from the reflux) and eat a couple of dry cream crackers to mop up any remaining acid. This normally settles it down. If I stick to the enzymes I can eat almost anything.
