Two days post op, when does it get better?

Hi , well had my op late Wednesday, just got home a few hours ago, op was a doddle nothing to worry about , had epidural with sedation but the sedation didn't work at all so knew and heard exactly what was going on but felt nothing , was great.

I am walking with sticks and finding it painful, I can actually feel the implant!? Or is this in my head ? It's a hard pressure pain up my thigh in to my hip. Not pleasant at all but hoping it will settle down, the normal pain I have has completely gone, most of the time if my leg is rested I have no pain but when I walk or go to loo or do my exercises the pain is bad, is this normal?

Quite normal. You have had a major 'butchering' inside your leg and this will take time to heal. You should find that the pain diminishes as time goes by and that you will be able to do more and more. Don't worry!

Yes all normal and yes it does get better. We all recover differently so don't try and compare yourself to others though. The first two weeks are hard going. Do your exercises, take pain relief, accept all help given and rest, I kept a bit of a diary of each day including photos and was amazed at the progress I had made after the staples came out. Be kind to yourself, and do not try to run before you can walk. Too easy to strain muscles. You will Feel A bit better every day, walk a bit longer every day and a bit more independence every day and before you know it you are well on the road to recovery!

Good luck

Hi Rachael. Sounds perfectly normal to me. I'm 14 weeks post op & can still feel mine. It's early days yet, give it time to heal. I was told it can take up to a year.

Hello Rachael. You need lots of rest for a few days. Go easy on the walking. Most of us spent 3-4 days in hospital. When I got home on day four I spent most of the time resting. My whole leg was swollen so much of the time I elevated i. Remember you have had major surgery. I didn't start going out till day fifteen. Now on my eight week birthday and walking with out aids but still get aches and get tired

Look after yourself

Thanks so much everyone, nice to hear from people that have been through the same experience, I had problems with dizziness and sickness in hospital a and feel like I am recovering from a sickness bug but consultant said its normal after epidural and new drugs in my system , at least the hip pain I had before is gone , it's a different pain and sensation now but one that I know will pass

Hi Rachel my op was 2 weeks ago tomorrow, I came home after 3 days. I can get round the house without any crutches and walk outside with one. Went to the supermarket yesterday and had my clips out today. It feels better, that pricking sensation has gone. I feel I am doing really well and do the exercises continually. Must admit haven't had much pain at all and only take a couple of painkillers when I go to bed as I find it difficult to sleep on my back. I too had spinal block and sedative. Every day will see an improvement. Keep up the exercises!

Well done Rachel. Your pain is normal, I am 3 weeks post op an for the first couple of weeks it felt as if I had been kicked by a horse! You will be glad to hear that it does get better, just don't try to do too much. Although you have exercises to do a lot of the healing takes place when you are resting so feet up with a cup of tea when you feel like it! Good luck for your recovery x

Hi dear rachael ... you are just2 days post-op, so yes - it is normal /// I had dizziness as well while in the hospital and thiought I might pass out ... remember that, in addtion to it being a major surgery, you also lost a lot of blood - that's what they told me --- take it very easy ... have a very good night - see you in the morning - warm hug

In France you spend a full week in the hospital doing nothing.

yes you will kind of feel the implant but soon your brain will make the adjustment. My worst pain was butt cheek pain. I found a pain cream worked pretty well, in France it is Volterene, it is sold in the UK under a similar name. Off and on my shins and my ankles would hurt and the pain cream completely took away that pain. For the butt cheek pain the cream would knock it down quite a bit but not completely. Get the 2% it is much better than the 1%.
