I had my opinion on Monday day and so far nearly every time I try and stand waves of nausea, light-readiness and vomiting occurs, I had a GA and have never had problems beforeš©
Hi Wendy,
I feel for you. I experienced exactly the same for the first 3-4 days. I didn't eat a thing in hospital. Even the smell of food made me physically sick. I didn't have a GA, it was the morphine and codeine that did it for me. It will pass but if you're concerned, please speak to the nurse. I'm assuming you're still in hospital?
All the best to you,
Dawn x
Hi I didn't have a GA or morphine or Cocodomol but felt like that for a month!! Spaced out, very faint sick, awful. Then it wore off. Xx
Hi Wendy don't worry this will pass. People react differently to GA and also the morphine and other opiate drugs that are given post op. Also if you have had a spinal then your blood pressure will be low and this will add to the dizziness you feel when you stand up. All of this coupled with the fact that you are not keeping any food down will add to the problem. The nurses can give you someting for the nausea so maybe ask for that and try to eat something. Stick in there it will get better :-)
I wonder if this could be a side effect of the pain meds you are on. Do the nurses/doctors at the hospital have any idea what is causing this and what they can do to help?
Oh Wendy..my worst nigtmare...I was pumped full of anti sickness meds via a drip and after that with tablets. have they given you anti sick stuff? So awfukl tring to recover and filling so unwell. i was so lucky to have a sympathetic surgeon who knew my phobia. i also suspect the painkillers are doing this to you as well as the GA. I asked for painkillers that were not opiate based and managed very well on parceatmol and brufena dn the occasional codiene.
I hope you are feeling less horrid now.

Thanks for replies. I was given to different anti-sickness drug in hospital but they didn't seem to help. I have been taking co-caramel but haven't had any since this early this morning. I am trying not to take any painkillers to see if things settle down.
HI Wendy,
As said, this will pass. Every one is different, so sensitivities are different also. I did not have a GA for my THR's, but have had them in the past for other surgeries and my body reacted the same as yours. You are still pretty fresh out of surgery, so just give it some time. You can also ask to adjust your pain medication and make sure they are giving you something for nausea.
Your body has just been through significant trauma, so it might shout at you a bit, but in time all will calm down.
Sorry you are so sick. It is miserable.

Its the pain killers, if you are on Morphine they need to change you to something else.
I too have real problems with morphine, I even told them before my surgery that i was sensitive to it, but what did they use morphine.
Second time round they told me they would not be using morphine but something else that would not have the same reaction, worked the same as I was in no pain, but also not vomiting everywhere.
Feel for you horrible.
good morning wendy,
I am sorry to hear that you're so sick and hope that you are feeling better this morning ...
there can be so many things that might cause nausea, vomitting and lightheadedness - I am sure that you are in good hands and will be taken care of -
I had lost a lot of blood, apparently, during 1st THR surgery and past out at some point when physical therapist wanted me to walk -
Take it easy and please let us know how you are getting on, okay
big warm hug

I am a bit anaemic even though I took iron tablets before the op. I am feeling better today thanks. One thing that I have noticed is that my foot on the operated side sticks out to the side, which it didn't before the op, strange. My surgeon reminded me that I will need the other side done, but I told him that I think I will keep it as long as possible, I never had an option of what type of anaesthetic I could have.
Hi dawn,
what pain meds did you use.
im 1 week post op, and have paracetemol with a very small amount of codeine. The latter makes me light headed and nauseous which stops me walking around.
cant take NSAIDs either.
Hi LDW,
I only used paracetamol on discharge from hospital. I was told not to take ibuprofen whilst on the anti coag medication. Now that I am off that, I prefer to take ibuprofen if needed.
I must admit to feeling like I was a bit short changed in terms of effective pain relief but I couldn't bear the sickness whilst on stronger meds. Now at 6 weeks, I am hardly taking any pain relief, which is great. After years of relying on it, it's a great feeling not to be popping pills all the time.
Dawn
Yes I feel the same re "short changed".
how did you manage to get around enough and do your exercises when pain level high?
Today has been better, no vomiting, but a bit light-headed when standing. I am going to try paracetamol before bed, last night was a bit difficult.
I just took the maximum amount of paracetamol per 24 hours, which was only 8. I found I had to be really careful with the timings otherwise I would run out. I found that I needed to take some during the night but it didn't leave me a lot for the day. At some points, I was counting down the hours until I could take them again.
Thankfully this has all passed now and barely taking any now. But it wasn't easy at first.
Thanks dawn. That's helpful.
btw did you ever get any groin pain?
Well done Wendy! See small triumphs each day. No vomiting today and tomorrow light headedness will be less. Try to eat something. I think I lived on soup and ice cream for the first few days. Also drank lots of water. You are doing great.

I have a few Tramadol and Codeine left over for just such emergencies !
Yes chicken noodle soup, small helpings throughtout day. The walking with crutches is getting a little better each, but I have quite a bit of buttock pain on my reasonably good hip
