I am due to start stage one of a two stage revision on the 24 feb due to an infection. The first stage they will remove my hip and I know I won't have a hip for at least two months. Has anyone had a two stage revision. I'm in Scotland. Thanks
Oh my goodness. Never have heard any one havingbthat procedure. Did you get a second opinion?
I can't imagine live ng like that. Sending you blessings and hugs.
Hi Cherrelle I am just on the road to THR and want to get both done at the same time to get it over with quickly, will see what they say as I am in terrible pain and rattleing with three Naproxin in 24/36 hrs every 8hrs when working to ease the pain.
What has gone wrong??? Kind regards Ian.
Oh my cherrelle, I have never heard of this and cringe at the thought. Did you obtain a second opinion? What do they hope to accomplish doing it this way? Can they not clear up the infection beforehand?
My prayers and best wishes to you for a good outcome.
Dawn
Oh dear Cher,no hip joint for 2months sounds horrendous and
Ive never heard of it before.
As others have said I'd get a 2nd opinion.
Wrightington hospital Wigan specialise in revision surgery,it might be worth getting in touch with them..with the freedom of choice act you can elect to use any UK hospital,if you don't mind travelling that is.
Hope you get it sorted out.
OMG, I am so sorry to hear that u developed an infection. THR do have so many side effects. I have had three one was a recall and revision. I thought that was bad . Having the two stage surgery with an infection involved is the only fix this complication by removing all the components until the infection has cleared up.
I had had revision surgery due to a recall on the THR components. Infection is always a complication in the back of my mind. Always my biggest fear.
Do u know what caused the infection?
It seems like a nightmare to most. Most of us are lucky to not to have those complications.
I hope that The Lord will give u all that u need to sustain u thru this journey.
i hope that u will have the best care and back on UR feet in a few months.
Many blessings sent UR way.
PLZ keep me posted or PM ME ON HOW UR doing.
Thank you everyone for your replies. I don't know what caused the infection but whatever it was it happened very early into my thr. I have my suspicions that it came from a knee scope to remove part of my meniscus at eleven weeks post of hip replacement. The thr had damaged my knee. Within days of my knee scope my hip was sore hot and swollen. So I do think it came from there. I appreciate all your kind words. Thankfully infection is rare. Stay well.
Are you going through that process?
How will you stand on that leg? Since it won't be connected to the pelvis. The loose bone will stick up under the muscle.
How long between the two procedures. I guess you will be in wheel chair for a while. How are you going to get up from the loo .what about steps.Do u have them? I'm really concerned for you.No way would I do that it's so primitive.
Hi there. I don't know if you are still monitoring this discussion but I am probably starting two stage revision of my hip joint in the near future. I think my infection came from colon surgery for bowel cancer, though who knows.
I was just wondering how you coped during the first phase and how successful the phase two was.
Hi
finally getting the second stage completed tomorrow morning.
2 years of pain 3 infections & 2 cancellations.
Cant wait to get back on the Rd to recovery.
hang on in there :-)
Simon
Sounds like you have had a very rough time. Mine has been a bit sore for years but I just thought it was wearing out or something. Came to a head last September, I saw a bone infection specialist in November and am booked in for my stage 1 on March 22nd.
How long were you between stage 1 and 2? Were you partial weight bearing? Apparently every case is different but they think I should be able to put some weight on it.
Good luck tomorrow. I hope you are over the worst.
Mike
Hi Mike,
Stage one was Sept 20th, so my spacer was in for nearly five Months.
I have been on two crutches ever since & been able to partially weight bear sometimes.
they recommend min 3 months to give the antibiotics time to take affect.
as you say, it will be different for everybody.
I had a particularly fun time as the original Hip replacement was of the uncemented type & involved having to split part of the femur to remove it.
I was in Hospital for 5 days on IV antibiotics & then home with daily home visits by NHS home team to administer daily IV drip for about 8 weeks.
Final stretch now so pretty upbeat about tomorrow.
hope you have an easier time of it Mike.
Simon
Bl***y H***! 5 months! The partial weight bearing sometimes was sort of what I am expecting. My surgeon says they may have to remove some bone if it's been damaged by the infection which will mean a longer spike.
But the plan sounds similar: 10 days in hospital and then antibiotics for 6-8 weeks.
Good that you are still positive after such a long tough journey. Hope it went OK today
Mike
Hi Mike,
sorry for for the delay, no wi-if on the ward.
All went well just got out yesterday evening, on one crutch straight away & no pain apart from usual post op stitches.
seems that I still have half inch leg difference but heel spacer takes care of that.
onwards & upwards, physio & exercises & get back to work.
2 motorbikes in garage waiting for me to get better!👍
Stick with it mate.
I wish you the best of luck in your recovery. I'm almost finished with 6 weeks of antibiotics after developing an infection within a month of a hip revision. Lucky me, I had to have my femur split, to remove cement for me and my stem is quite far down. I was told that was where my stability comes from. It sounds like you are due for some good to come to you!
Thanks Candice, long Rd & painful but well worth it.
the difference is amazing.
Sounds like you have also been through the Mill.
I hope you & Mike get sorted & on the Rd to recovery soon & you have good friends to support you during the process.

Hi Simon, Great news. Only one crutch!! Keep progressing. I've not ridden a motorbike for a very long time but I've got a couple of pushbikes in my shed that I hope won't be too rusty by the time I can jump on again.
