Hello again. I know I have already posted today about a different subject but as the one query has nothing to do with the other I thought I would be greedy and do two! Right, I have been getting severe pain on the top of my right hip bone. It feels like it is badly bruised (it isn't). It is at it's worst when I get up after sitting for any length of time (half an hour or more). It then wears off after walking for a few minutes. Does anyone recognise this as part of their PMR pain or is it something unrelated? I am due to get an appointment for a dexa scan any day so maybe this will show what is up. I am also getting dreadful knee pain at times which the rheumi thinks is osteo-arthritis although I think it feels more like nerve pain. I am having an x-ray on this tomorrow. When this is bad I can't walk for about ten minutes, then it eases up and is ok to put my weight on.
I went for my second gastroscopy yesterday (first one showed severe oesophagitis and an ulcer). Good news is, the ulcer is gone. Bad news is, it was caused by a 'sliding haiatus hernia' which was hiding under all the inflamation! Anyone else got this? Apparently that is what is causing the gastric reflux disease. Not sure if this is down to the preds or just a coincidence that I got it just after starting them (Jan '14). Sorry if this post sounds a bit confused and rambling but to be honest that's how I'm feeling at the moment! Take care everybody, Debbie
I think I know this discomfort Debbie and I have used a massager which I paid £100 for - and find this helps enormously, probably helps circulation to the muscles and joints. Certainly there is a tender point where my thigh meets my hip and I have rubbed in some anti-inflammatory cream I bought from the chemist which relieved it very quickly. I hope yours clears up quickly too.
Debbie, along with the PMR pain which is pretty much under control I too have the odd pain here and there. Mostly right hip and shoulder. I put this down to a sports injury when I was in my twenties that as I'm getting older is rearing its ugly head.
i had a gastroscopey prior to my diagnosis which revealed a sore in my stomach at the top where the pipe meets the stomach. What caused this I have no idea and whether it has got better or worsened since I started taking preds, (dec 13) I gave no idea.
what symptoms did you have that prompted the gastroscopey and what have the dr's suggested in relation to your new diagnosis and pred medication. Regards, christina
Hi Christina. My symptoms are: Regular, severe acid reflux even with highest dose of omeprazole, noisy windpipe when breathing, especially yawning or asleep, sores in my mouth, food tasting of plastic(!) and not being able to raise my voice above a certain level (all of which I still have btw). The first gastroscopy found very inflamed oesophagus and stomach and an ulcer. They changed my meds to Pantoprazole and did a second gastroscopy after six weeks (yesterday). I have yet to see my doctor for her opinion on this. They gave me next to no info at the hospital. Getting really cheesed off with it all! All the best Debbie
Hi Debbie, given what you have said, along with the pantoprazole eat some yogurt when taking your preds, at least until the powers that be decide what further action should be taken so that your stomach and your preds can work together in harmony. All the best, Christina
Hi Debbie I also suffer with bad knee pain, It got worse when I had To go up from 8 to 40mg of Prednisone .I take a teaspoon of Manuka Honey 24+ and Yogurt on a morning and find this helps with Reflux.
I replied on the other comment too - I'd suggest it could well be trochanteric bursitis which would respond well to a local cortisone injection rather better than to the oral pred dose. I had it badly in early PMR and it did eventually respond to the 15mg/day oral pred I was started on but it took some months before I suddenly realised it had gone!
Just checking - you aren't on bisphosphonate for "bone protection" are you? That's alendronic acid or similar - they are totally contraindicated for anyone with such gastric problems.
Thanks everyone. Some very helpful advice as always! Eileen I am not on any 'bone meds'. Thanks for the 'heads up'. I will definitely be saying no if offered those again! Take care everone, Debbie
Hi Debbie,
I too have had that bruised tender feeling on that bone area above hip, it's the Iliac Crest. The Gluteus muscles attatch there. Before PMR I had trocanteric bursitis in my right hip (have it again with PMR), yet my LEFT iliac area hurt. Physical Therapists didn't seem to care, I now assume it's if we are using those muslces to compensate for the pain in the trocanteric pain. But they are now teaching me that so much of the hip involves groin, hamstring, back, hip flexors, quads, knees. Also, if we do NOT keep our range of motion mobile then things can tighten up and pull or cause stress on other things. Perhaps see if your doctor recommends a therapist like mine did.
Just didn't want you to feel alone about that pain. Yes, ive had it so bad in past that I couldn't take a step for a few minutes until it subsided. strange huh?
