Hi everyone, can you tell me where you all got your 'gadgets' from - pickers, bed/chair raisers, toilet raised thingy (!). I'm having my OP at the Nuffield & unsure if they provide or is it NHS that provides or do I buy myself? I'm trying to get prepared as much in advance as possible. Is it necessary to raise the end of the bed? Thank you all again in advance x
I am getting the toilet frame, the tall stool from the red X,the private hosp is giving me loo seat, I bought long shoe Horn from a shoe menders, and a grabber, didn't have to have the bed raised, if you are going national health the Occ therapist should come to your house before you go in hosp and see what is needed.
Hi there
I had my operation at the Nuffield almost 4 weeks ago . The physio told me which equipment they would provide at my pre op . They gave me a grabber , a toilet seat, crutches and a leg raiser ( I'm not sure the leg raiser is standard ) when I got home I ordered another grabber so I had one upstairs and downstairs and another toilet seat for the same reason . I also ordered a v shaped pillow and a sun lounger ( all from Amazon) . I also ordered a slumber cushion from futons first so I could sleep on my side . They are expensive but worth every penny for me . Hope that answers some questions, but you can ask all these questions at pre op . Good luck xxx
Hi Fernlady,
I was given my raised toilet seat, grabbers and long handle shoe horn at my pre op assessment. My op was at a Spire hospital but was through the NHS. Might be worth giving the Nuffield a call to save any unnecessary expense?
I didn't initially raise the end of my bed but after a week or so, placed a large pillow (the kind from a sofa back) at the bottom of the bed for my legs to rest on. I found this very comfortable for sleeping on my back and now at 6 weeks post op, still use it.
When is your op?

I had my op in November, I got a chair for the bathroom and toilet seat and rail. I got a grabber and shoe horn off ebay. .wish i got a sock thingy now. Really need one unless you have some one around.

I got my long handled shoehorns from IKEA. 75p each.
Hi Fernlady
Rather than giving you info where you can get all the aids you need, I would suggest you first find out from the Occupational Health team at the Nuffield what they will be supplying you with. You can then decide if what else you require, we can then suggest which supplir to go to.
Best wishes

Hi Nikki, how many days/weeks before did you have your pre-op? I'm on holiday the week before, back for 2 days & then in!
Hi Dawn, my OP is 8th June. I'm just trying to get organised!
I got a my raised loo seat from Amazon. I know my hospital will loan me one but I am already having difficulty getting on and off the loo. Looking around on Amazon it seems you can get everything there - shoe horns, sock things, leg lifters, grabbers, chair raisers, dressing sticks etc. I think these will be handy to have around anyway as I get older so I'm planning on buying most of them - they're very inexpensive and I want to feel when I go into hospital that my home is all ready.

I was an NHS patient in a private hospital. I was given a toilet seat raiser, shoe horn, a grabber, crutches and a bath board. I would say all are necessary except the shoe horn as I chose to wear deck shoes and were easy to put on and take off.
Operated 4 weeks ago.

NHS in Hertfordshire provided :-
ONE seat raiser (not for my recliner)
Two toilet seat raisers - different types for our 2 loo's
Would have supplied bed raisers, but didn'tneed them.
TED aid (slippery nylon bag)
Large dressings
They did not provide :-
Grabber (eBay)
Shoe horn (Local disabled supply shop)
Recliner raiser (made my own - see my website)
Sock aid (Local disabled supply shop)
It may differ between authorities and individual hospitals though.
I didn't raise the end of the bed.
I did use our office chair as a dining room chair, and my wife's old wheeled veg store as my personal items trolley (see website again).

I think it was about 2 weeks before . Have you not had a date for it yet? I was able to have a good chat with the physio and find out about recovery etc X
