Ultrasound

My new uro is going to have me get a ultrasound, will that test show my problem so he will know what procedure to do, Thanks

It will determine the volume of your prostate, an essential trait to decide on a procedure. If it is over 80 g, UROLIFT is out.

Lew,

If he is recommending an abdominal ultrasound, it will show how much urine you are retaining after emptying as much as you can. It can also give a rough idea of the size of your prostate.

If he is recommending the TRUS, Trans Rectal Ulta Sound, it gives a more accurate reading of the size of your prostate.

Both of these are probably not enough to determine a course of action but can be used along with other tests to determine what to do, if anything.

Before any procedure would be prescribed the doctor would probably want a cystoscopy, DRE, PSA, flow rate, Urine test for bacterial infection, and possibly a urodynamics test.

Hope this helps,
Thomas

Hi,
I’ve had a cystoscopy which determined that I have an enlarged median lobe. I’ve had many ultrasounds (gel just above the pubic area and an instrument sliding about) but all they show is the amount of urinary retention. I didn’t think that this sort of ultrasound determines the size of the prostate.
