Unable to walk after hip replacement

suffered knee damage and cannot weight bear without a knee support from hospital. they have now taken me into hospital again to find out why

Carmel,

Same problem with me. When they dislocated my hip, they tore my meniscus in my knee. It's almost 10 months post op and they won't even address it anymore. I can walk but it's painful. My knee won't bend, either, to the sides. My appt. is next Tuesday and I'm going to get answers. I can't do anything that I was able to do before the surgery. Best of luck to you. Dana

Dear Dana

I really, really do hope that you get some answers so that you can bring your nightmare to an end.  Can I suggest that you say to them that you want to record the discussion so that you can refer to what was discussed in the calm of home.   It might also help to concentrate their minds!

Good luck

Richard

Richard,

Thanks for the advice. I hadn't thought about that. I wouldn't even have to ask them if is was okay. In the states, as long as one person knowing it's being recorded is all it takes. However, having the Dr know it might make a big difference. Thanks again!! Dana

Dear Dana

If nothing else it shows that you mean business and are not going to be a push over. Bit like when discussing something on the phone with a supplier for example, the simple act of asking for the name of who are talking to will often illicit the remark please hold on while I double check!

Cheers Richard

Hi Carmel:  My THR was September 6.  I took it easy the first week, then had to see the doctor to have staples removed.  I WALKED for the first time in 4 months that day - still walking with the walker, but I walked!  I was so excited!!!  Then my knee blew up, and my foot blew up, and my walking days were over.  Next visit with the doctor, he ordered an MRI of my knee, and learned I have a stress fracture, I guess a result, or a common occurrence after hip surgery.  So I have still ditched the walker, walking without it and when I go out I use a cane for stability, but my knee is fractured and I spend all my time at home with my leg up on the bed and an ice bag under and on top of it.  It feels like this nightmare is never going to end - I broke my hip in May and I was originally told I didn't need surgery; then in August I was told my bones had moved and I did require surgery.  I wish I had the surgery sooner - I was in so much pain and waited and waited for the pain to go away and to be able to walk.  Not only did they fix my hip (anterior approach), in order to even out my leg length they made me a 1/2" taller!  I like that part!  I hope it's nothing serious for you and that you are up and walking soon.  Patience is something I have been working on.  Wishing you all the best ~ Janet
