unbearable pain from abcess/wisdom tooth/infection?????

hi

i have been in pain for about 4 wks now. i wasnt registered with dentist but went to a local one i had used yrs ago. turned out to be private but pain was so bad, i wasnt bothered. had check up, he said i had abcess, 3rd tooth from bk. gave me antibiotics for 3 days. he also said bk wisdom tooth wud need to come out as wasnt helping. anyway pain seemed to disappear, but wisdom tooth started to hurt, strange as it didnt before. was due to go bk 16th april, long time i no, for wisdom tooth out. 2 wks later, this was thurs, unbearable pain for 3 days, no sleep, glands were swollen, pains in ear and head, went to nhs walk in centre, didnt even no it existed. he looked, did x-ray, said there was infection in gum, and wisdom tooth wud need to come out as not helping. so 4 injections later, tooth is out. numb face for about 6 hours, best 6 hours ever... pain free. once it wore off pain came bk with a vengenance. it is now sat, half way through antibiotics, taking strongest pain killers available over counter, and the odd ibruprofen as well and still no improvement. the pain now seems to be in top teeth as well as bottom. cant close mouth properly, teeth dont seem to meet, pains in ears and head worse than ever, and was told to rinse with salty water. tried few times, nearly went through the roof!!! ouch is that supposed to hurt. and keep gettin sort of shooting/stabbing pains where tooth removed. i also seem to be having trouble swallowing tablets, seems like throat very narrow. and antibiotics taste awful, get stuck on bk of tongue. have spent hour or so reading other posts, so maybe i just need to b patient, but any advice would be great. my mum has told me to ring nhs direct for advice on pain but always feel like its a bit trivial, and they think im mardy. :?

Yes the antibiotics can cause tooth pain :D if you stop taking them your teeth might improve. Your gum will ache and sting for 2 or 3 days but it does calm down quite suddenly when it happens smile

thanx for the reply, so the antibiotics can cause other teeth to hurt as well. i was thinking i would probably need more, as only got 2 and half days left, and pain no better. i have never had pain like this before, would rather go through labour personally. just cant see light at end of tunnel, and its starting to get me down now. doesnt help that im working all day every day this week. but will carry on with painkillers for now, im hoping to get in docs monday for something stronger.

Yes they sure can make other apparenty healthy teeth kick off, its a killer isnt it sad Your GP might not give you anything for the pain, it depends how he / she is feeling :? Soluable Paracetamol (expensive ones with added Caffeine are best, some brands have Codeine aswell) and a few Ibuprofen might help smile

just an update, rang nhs direct for advice, i was taking paramol, they said there is ingredient in them that can make toothache worse and advised paracetemol and ibruprofen, alternated every 3 hrs, and to go bk to dentist. so monday, went to work, rang emergency dentist and was told to go and sit n wait as it is a walk in service. seen same dentist as last time, very nice man, did x ray, checked all teeth and made sure i was healing ok, said can experience pain for a while due to it being a wisdom tooth removed. still have infection so he gave me more antibiotics for another 7 days!!! and advised me to see doctor while i was there because of swelling and pains in face, ears and neck. turns out i have ear infection as well which explains why i felt my head was going to burst. so day 1 of 3rd lot of antibiotics, fingers crossed they are going to work, as i am seriously fed up now.

I too just got my upper wisdom tooth removed. I am 40 years old, and grew them in when I was a mere 14. I had my teeth for all these years and was quite devasted to hear the last time I was a the dentist that the repair on my wisdom teeth may not matter. I was told that the pain can persist in the wisdom teeth despite the fillings. My fillings were low, and close to the nerves. Then for the past 6 months I felt a hole in the one and just decided yesterday that it was time to go in and get it checked. Ironically, my filling \"popped\" out when I was flossing before I went to my dentist appointment. THANK GOD! I say this b/c my tooth was exposed. Dentist numbed me right up, and took the tooth out. No sharp pain when pulling, but I will say that it does feel like \"tree roots,\" and I do mean tree roots are attached to the tooth. You will feel like when they are pulling that the roof of your mouth, and your throat are in some way attached to this tooth by \"long tree roots.\" It doesn't feel good, but I will tell you don't be afraid b/c it doesn't really hurt. It is a strange feeling, and an uncomfortable feeling, but it wasn't that bad.

Now when I came home with my upper left wisdom tooth in a coffin and given 5mg of percocet 16 in all. I had to take 4 at a time due to my tolerance. I didn't tell Dentist of my tolerance. And this goes without saying as you all know. But, my extraction recovery was fine on that side except I did get a small hemotoma.

Okay, here is the bad part about all this. Now, my right upper is killing me. I mean killing me. But, to the girl that said she rather go through labor (child birth), she is crazy. I don't know if she has ever been through it, but for me there is no pain as bad as that. I broke my left femur at 18, and I would do it over again, and over again, to avoid the actual labor that I went through when I was 25.

Anyway, on to the subject. Right upper wisdom tooth is now been excited. I think it may show the same that showed in the other x-ray of the other tooth. My other tooth that was removed was x-rayed first and since the last one 6 mo.s ago, I let the pain and hole go on and now the x-rayed revealed that the nerve was dead and that there was cavity going on at the top, and that bacteria of an abcess formed below at the roots. I was given 3 options. Patch it up, and pain will come back, or root canal, or removal. Well, I am not getting a root canal on a wisdom tooth. It costed me well over $2500 and had insurance. Do you hear that folks. I have insurance coverage. The entire price would have been $5000. Well, folks not for a wisdom tooth that I had done twice. Third time is not a charm, so out it goes. Now, I am waiting for the dentist to come back and call me today so that they can see about this other tooth. I need to get it x-rayed to ssee if the same thing is going on.

Ms.Wisdom Teeth Hurt

Well all I can say is that you were lucky. I have a great dentist but had to have my left upper molar removed in hospital. I have a bone marrow disorder which means that my blood does not clot and my doctor was worried that I might haemorrhage.

Anyway the offending molar came out on Friday. I had 2 local anaesthetic injections but before they could take effect the dental surgeon atempted to remove the tooth.

I say attempted because the tooth shattered and she had to take it out in 5 bits. I was crying with pain all the time.

followed the post extraction instructions to the letter. But had to return to hospital because of severe pain which was getting worse. I have a dry socket, probably due to the bm disease as my blood doesn't clot! also an infection so am now on antibiotics. The cavity was packed with iodine stuff which tastes foul. It fell out within 24 hrs so had to return to my dentist and have it repacked.

Not a good experience at all!
