Unexplained Weight gain

Hi

I'm looking for some advice on a weight gain that will not budge.  I gained 6 stone from an underactive thyroid issue and steroids for a respiratory disorder.  I have been told I need to lose 10kg by my consultant. My thyroid has corrected itself and my TSH is now 2.5 so I am off medication.  I eat under 1000 calories a day, do not eat junk nor do I drink alcohol.  I am up to 15k a day power walking and light jogging as my consultant advised me to stay away from weights and just do cardio.  In 2 weeks alone I have gained 4 lbs.  I have had everything checked and I am being told everything is fine yet no matter how clean I keep my diet and no matter how much exercise I do I am not losing a lb but am going up on the scales.  My cortisol level was just checked and it is also fine.

Any advice welcome

Your body is in survival mode and holding on to every calorie it can get. Start eating more. Under 1000 calories is way too low for that much exercise. I don't know your height or weight, but you probably need to eat 500 or more calories on top of what you are already eating.

Hi Net, how long have you been off the meds? It can take 3 months to several years for your body to readjust after going off meds, depending on the dose, whether you tapered off and your thyroid condition. TSH of 2.5 can be subcinical hypothyroid, which means you’ll play hell losing weight.

You’re diing great with calories and cardio!

Even though your TSH has gone down, you still have to deal with the autoimmune disease that causes thyroid disease. A glutenfree (no cheating on the gluten), paleo diet can help the immune system. Avoid soy, corn cane sugar and all processed foods.

When I went off the meds, I had sluggish kidney and liver. When the kidney and liver are  sluggush, your body can’t eliminate properly. And, the sluggish liver can affect your digestion and the functions of your pancrease and gallbladder.

Of course all this sort of thing is subclinical, while the weight gain is a very obvious symptom.

I found acupuncture to be extremely helpful in getting the system back on track. Essential amino acid complex was also extremely helpful. Be sure to take good quality vitamin and mineral supplements with coblimated B. B12 shots can be helpful. Liver, kidney and colon cleansing can help enormously. Low calorie protein smoothies and vegetable juices can orovide high nutrients.

Really, the trick is to keep from gaining more weight while your body adjusts after going off the meds. You might want to consider this as a temporary goal. Once your body readjusts, you’ll lose weight.

It’ll take time. Meanwhile, keep your nutrients up and keep with your program.  You could try varying your calorie intake each day.  That can help.

Welcome to the club , when you gain weight your body rarely wants to go back to the low weight you had before expecially if you are over 40 , your body will try every way to hold on to the extra fat , it's a hard cycle to break.

Until I was 44 my weight was 145 ,all muscular with a six pack , and then I gained 13 pounds in 2 years that I can't get rid of. I tried everything and I eat about 1500 calories a day and moderate exercise . I don't think my problem came form the Thyroid even though I take 150mg day Synthroid.

About your diet , you should definitely be losing weight with 1000 calories a day and exercise ,I don't believe you have your count right ,maybe you're making a mistake with your calories count.
