Up or down?

Hi all you post op hippies out there

I am now 5 days post op and home. My leg is very stiff as it has swollen so much, which I know is to be expected. I have two comfy chairs which I can sit in - one with arms and a high back like you get in hospital and one lift and rise. This has a dual motor so it is very easy to control and avoid breaking the 90 degree rule, so my question is this - is it better to sit with my legs up or down?

Hi, I found that keeping them up for some of the day really helped with my swelling. It also reduced the pain of getting back into walking so I think a bit of up and about and then some feet up time. My physio was very happy with this for me.

Hope you are doing well and it does get easier, honest.

Yes thats an easy one, I have a recliner and sitting in it raised, has helped the swelling go down I have no swelling at all now at three weeks, but just itchyness, I have just had a shower and still itchy...But this morning I did lie on my left unoperated side for 30 mins so perhaos I can sleep on that side tonight....

Kind regards Ian.

Thanks guys - I have to say it feels better to have them up but don't want to do anything wrong.😀

Hi Rosie.

I found it better to switch between the two. Spend some time with your legs rasied and some with your legs down. The best is to have your legs higher than your heart if you can because this can help with swelling and circulation.

Glad you are ok.

Thanks Hailea

Hi Rosie,

I would say up, as this helps with the swelling, if you try and keep your operated leg higher than your heart is good, hope you have a good recovery,  I use a dual motor recliner which I bought after my first THR, I use it all the time, also ice packs are great for the swelling

Lynne.
