Upcoming surgery

Hello

You may remember I been having a bad time, my sister died last Friday and in between caring for her and my husband I got rushed into hospital with severe pain and sickness.   I'd rung 111 and the paramedic was at the door before I'd even put the phone down, id never been so eager to take pain relief, gas and air, morphine and paracetamol with even more administered at the hospital.   Upshot is I have Gallstones, yesterday I went to see my GP about foot surgery as I have a bunion which has dislocated my toe, but because of the gallstones she cannot refer me to the orthopaedics.  The NHS  have an 18 week policy, so because my gallstones are more urgent I have to go on the waiting list for that op, meaning I could not commit to the 18 week for my foot op as I would not be ready because of the gallstone op.

never rains put it pours.

Anyadvice for me on the gallstone op please re alendronic acid, Levothyroxine, pred and vit d.?

Hi angelcake, you really have been through it. If I remember rightly your sister had a brain tumour, this must have been a dreadfully sad time for you knowing the ultimate conclusion. I really do feel for you and send you all my love and best wishes.

now it is about caring for you. We all need to stay as heathy as we can whilst dealing with PMR. I contacted a friend to ask about a polup that had been discovered on my gallbladder following a ultra sound scan. She is an embryologist, but still a Dr so I occasionally bore her stupid with my complaints. She told me that the operation for gallbladder removal is day surgery and they don't even cut you open! You are knocked out but the surgery is actually keyhole surgery whereby they make two tiny incisions, and before you know it your gallbladder is out.

once you have a gallbladder removed you have a tendency to want to rush to the toilet more often to empty your bowels and apparently your stools are not quite as solid, but that's a small price to pay as undiagnosed gallbladder problems can be troublesome. Also you may find that your liver starts to perform better as these two organs wellness does effect the other.

i can't help you re all the other meds that you are on but I think you will be asked to up your preds before during and after the op, and then dosage back to normal. Do let us know how you get on.

All the best, regards, christina

hello and so sorry to read about your sister. You have so much to deal with.

I am replying because my sister in law's sister had her gallstones removed a few weeks back. It was keyhole as Christina pointed out and amazingly the very next day she went for coffee at a local coffee shop. The day after, shopping.

Ask if the anesthetists will be giving you extra steroid during the op. I think that is what usually happens. Its always best to ask someone to tell you excatly what will happen.

Your other meds will be taken and given to you by the nurse once the doctor gives the okay.

Good luck with it, and do give yourself some time and space to take in all that is haooening to you. Best wishes, Jen

Thank you christina for your kind words and all the info, hopefully it will be keyhole surgery

Hi, So sorry for all your worries coming at once. I had gallstones removed 30 years ago and had no problems afterwards. I have also had the bunion on my right foot operated on and am thinking of having the other one done but GCA has put a stop to that meantime. I am also on levothyroxine but don't know what vit.d is.

I am feeling quite poorly at the moment. I think it is reaction to the news of the breakup of my son's marriage after 18 years. As I also have IBS you can imagine how my insides are feeling!!

No - that is definitely unfair to put it mildly! Do you mean how the AA and vit D would affect the op? That's really a question for the doctor. Vit D shouldn't have any effect one way or the other, your thyroxine meds are also "for life" I would have thought.

The alendronic acid is definitely one for the surgeons though - it may be unadvisable for a while with the gallstones op. It may also have an effect on the healing of the bunion op but it isn't an op I know much about.

Oh my, you've really been handed a lot to handle lately and gallstones are so...... painful.  Unless there is some other issue I believe you will undergo the keyhole type surgery. Upping your pred for a few days then hopefully we'll on the mend.

Sending best wishes for a speedy recovery💐

Hi Doreen,

I totally understand you feeling poorly about your son's situation.  As mothers we are somehow in sync with our children no matter what their age and share their joys and unfortunately their pain.  My son and his wife almost split up last summer and I thought my heart would break.  They had a rough time but seem to have worked their way through it for now which I'm glad for the sake of my sweet grandchildren.

all we can do is let them know we love them and be there to help when we're needed.

in the mean time take especially good care of yourself so you don't end up in trouble yourself.

Hugs, Diana🌸

Thank you every one, I take comfort from your kind words and appriciate your advice and experiences x

So sorry to hear you are having a bad time, i cant help because im a newbie still, but some one will, take care of yourself.
