hi I have just been and had that awful big fat dressing removed. I also had my stiches taken out, I have not had it replaced with anything and I have been told " I can now have a bath or shower, but no long soaks. I have a plastic separator between my toes and have to wear the lovely sandals for another four weeks when I will also be sent another out patient appointment.
Cant wait for that bath tonight, my skin is soooooo dry, and flaking not only on the foot but all up the leg. My foot is still swollen and bruised. I was told its early days yet and it still has a lot of healing to do. My feeling on the top of my big toe may be permanent or may come back in time.
I've just had my big bandage removed although stitches next week but feels better having that changed told to walk on foot now feels odd but toes are moving also told will be in this shoe for Atleast another 5 weeks all in all recovery seems to be going ok x
Enjoy Sue. Don't have the water too hot! Be warned you shed skin over the first few baths! I used an old flannel to gently rub it off and even now the underside of my toe is still peely after a bath.
take it easy and keeps lots of padding (towels and bath mats) on the floor for when you get out. Balancing act!
Congratulations! Am I the only person who has to wear the giant bandage for six weeks? I had it changed at two weeks and now have to wear it for another four weeks. I've asked about taking it off but been told to keep it on!
I am 27 days post op and still have a dressing on. I will have it on for at least another 11 days as I am having two toes straightened and they have wires in them. The wires have to stay in for another 12 days. So it will be nearly six weeks by the time I am able to have a shower. Not that I am counting!
Thanks Sue, I'll remember that.. I feel like a snake already my skin is quite dry normally( too much sun bathing in my younger days) however is coming of in scales almost 😄
Hi I've still got a dressing on just smaller than last one have to keep shoe on another 5 weeks I've got wires in foot and big toe have another check next week think it's more for wound check and to make sure toes moving ok pleased bandage changed as was sticking to stitches where had bled a bit feels more comfortable now
Think it's that and the consultant what their preference is mine didn't give out crutches either, whereas some do, plus some people have bone removed some shaved so guess it may well depend on bit both, I'm happy with my care and advise so far will see how I progress and when time comes for normal shoes
Different procedures and different surgeon requests I think. There were three different surgeons at my hospital all giving different advice and recovery recommendations! Bizarre!
I will just be glad when I can get rid of the giant shoe and toe spacer, meanwhile I am elated I can have a bath again...shower tomorrow but tonight a lovely bath...
I have a minimum of 4 weeks in the bulky bandaging and it may be longer. It really depends on how much work we've all had done and some are luckier than others with the time limit. I'm on 3 weeks post op, next appointment next week but not sure until I get there if they will take off bandage or remove stitches ..... if they do, I might be able to have a bath (at last!)
Yay, congratulations! I had my visit yesterday with the same experience although my doc said that he used premenant screws in my toe and dissolving stitches so I will luckily not have those appointments in my future. I was showering pretty well with a taped bag on my leg but yes a full "foot loose" shower will be amazing today! Looking forward to hearing more from you as you continue to recover.
Hi,my advice to you: don't put water with soap on your feet, soap have a lot of stuff you don't need now. My doctor also took dressing away and allowed me to have a bath. For a week I was doing salt bath and try not to soak feet for a long time. Salt has a great healing power I am 4 weeks now, the scar is great looking, going around in normal sandals! Good luck, enjoy the bath!
i wont put put anything in the bath, I usually show with sanex because I suffer from allergys. Does anyone know when I can start using bio oil ? I got some today because it was on offer. I should think it's too soon at the moment because I am still at risk of infection, thus no long soaks. Funny isn't it I read on the Internet not to get it wet for weeks...
I just used plain water at first and then just a little soap and gradually build it up. My skin is still sensitive around the scar but have used the arnica cream up to the edge and did use bio oil a couple of weeks ago but it felt a bit stingy so decided to leave it for a while. Just be gentle and pat dry. At first a used kitchen towel to dry between swollen toes and also get rid of the peeling skin between them ...ugh! Maybe that is too much information!
