Update on cancelled hip replacement

hi all

just an update and need some more info my hip replacement was on the 4th september but was cancelled i had my pre op assessment on the 7th august at the hospital where my operation was being peformed ive now got a letter today saying i have to go for another pre op assessment on the 8th october but not at the hospital where my op was being done although it is still one of the hospitals in the group area which covers the nhs  does anyone know if this is usual or will they be doing my op at this other hospital now sorry for chattering on only im getting so confued now and still no date for the actual op. help please

ps. i did try ringing but couldnt get any answers from them

Maybe. It's do to the type of hip surgery your having.like the anterior they need special operating table for that surgery.. and some hospitals don't have them.

Otherwise just may be staffing issues.

I don't know beyond  that.I'm in the usa. smile

thank you for your reply gingerlol

Hi Hippy, Have you not been given the name of your surgeon?  In any case; another pre-op assessment is not uncommon: the NHS so often has to postpone scheduled ops that the pre-op you first had has become out of date, & they need to do a second one. I'd suggest ringing again & asking to know the surgeon they propose - in whcih case they may better be able to forecast when your new date might be. Alternatively they may have a number of surgeons; & haven't assigned you on, just intending to book you with the first available.  Not much help, I know, but it might give you something to pursue?  Good luck.

Yes this is normal I had two pre ops just incase anything has changed you will get you date soon because it has to be done soon  after the pr op also your Anethetist princely holds clinics at all the hospitals in the trust

thanks for the info sandra just couldnt understand why being sent to other hospital for another pre op also i havent even met the anethetist yet did you at your first pre op

hiya ross yes i do know the name of my surgeon but he told me he only operates at the hospital where i had my first pre op this is why im thinking why are they sending me for another pre op at the hospital where he doesnt work feeling so confused

Hi Hippy, Others may disagree (?), but I'm of opinion that knowing well in advance who your anaethetist will be isn't of great importance. I only met mine a few hours before my procedure; time enough to decide I liked the look of him (&, indeed, he did his job perfectly competently).

Do you know what kind of hip surgery your getting?

hi ginger no not yet only that its a full left hip surgery

thanks for info ross

Hi Hippy

I did try to reply to you earlier but I'm having problems with the site

Anyway for what its worth.....Its not unusual to have to have a 2nd pre-assess

They only last so long.

I didnt see my anaesthetist until before the operation

Have you tried ringing the consultants secretary and asking her whats happening

I find they are usually very helpful

Its awful when you dont know things

Love

Eileen

No I Didnt see my Anaethetist until the morning of my operation , you only see the Anaethetist at pre op if there are any problems or your blood come back not as they should be, My son-in-Law is a Consultant at Wrightington and told me if everthing was ok I wouldnt see the consultant beforhand dont worry Wigan Hospital have three hospitals.Wigan Leigh and Wrightington there are more staff at other Hospitals ,Wrightington is only Orthapedic not used for anything else but wonderfull hospital known world wide good luck Sandra x

thanks sandra im with the pennine acute trust and they have a few hospitals bury oldham and north manchester so maybe this is why then if they short of staff at north manchester and im being seen at oldham which is nearer for me anyway i just hope i get the surgeon i was told as like i said previous he only operates at north manchester take care xx

hi eileen thank you so much for the info i did speak to secretary she said they would be in touch but so far not heard anything take care xx

The way I think about this type of frustration, is to believe that it is going down exactly the way in which is should for reasons unbeknowns to me.  There are four really great words I like that carry the power to help me not fight against the flow of things.  "It is as it is."  I agree that the delay and switch will definitely benefit you in some way.

My best to you,

Dawn

thank you so much dawn

                                      kind regards to you

Hi Dawn

Just read your post to hippy........that is the right way to look at it.....I must try that with this stupid fracture {after THR}......doesnt seem to be healing and it is frustrating

I must remember those four words

Love

Eileen

Greetings Eileen, How did you get that fracture? Is it on the operated leg? And why did the doctor say it woild not heal?.I don't understand? By the way you don't have answer these questions. Its my nursing. Mind ,sorry that's how I I'm wired.smile

Hi Ginger

So you were a nurse

I nursed but not general nursing.....I'm an RNMS registered nurse for mentally subnormals....Dont anyone shout please.....I know there is no such thing as mentally subnormal now its Learning Difficulties but that was a while ago I trained.

I'm in the UK.,........its the same 3 years that a General Nurse does for her training but we skimmed over biology and things like that and majored on psychiatry, psychology, and sociology. So I know a little bit but not enoough Enough to say that med is contra-indicated.....will you check please  LOL and things like that.Although how I remember my drug assessment from 35 years ago I dont know

OK back to your questions....ask what you like I dont mind.

It was my 2nd THR (8 months ago)  weeks into recovery and i was doing an NHS exercise.....hands on the table, abduct our operated leg slightly {to strengthen the muscle} one time I did it....craccccckkkk!!!! my leg gave way, they took me into hospital C Rayed it and said "you have fractured your greater trochanter bone {mean anything? It didnt to me at the time} We cant do anything, it will heal itself. It will take a long long time......no one would give me any idea of how long

Why it wont heal.......not sure.....like I said in another post I was on the operating table havining an aspiration {to check for infection} and I suddenly said to him.....will it ever heal? So not the best time or place to aske really  but he's used to me being nosey and asking lots of questions etc. So I'll make a list out {always do} and ask him when I next see him to explain and lots of other questions as well......thats something elese he's used to LOL I walked in  one day with no notebook......he said Where are your questions Eileen

Ask anything else I havent explained properly I dont mind

I'm an arthritis care volunteer over here and a couple of us do stands in different places and anyone that wants, to comes and gets information and asks us loads of questions. We try to answer them all if not we have a file that we can look at to direct them somewhere else.
