I had open myo on 24th April. Spent 3 days at the hospital. It wasn't that bad after all. Return to work after 15 days. The recovering had been great so far. The incision ( bikini cut) is healing gradually though still feeling bloated. Thank you all for the support I got from this forum.
Hi. Thanks so much for sharing!! Can you tell me, if you had a job where you worked from home on a laptop, do you think you could have gone back to work sooner than 15 days? Also if you lived alone, would you have needed any help? I have a 11ish cm fibroid and would prefer robotic or laparoscopic because less down time, but my OBGYN said might need open because of size. But I’m worried about being out of work and on my own. Lastly, did you consider doing embolization instead of surgery? If so, why did you choose open surgery? I’m in CA btw. Thanks!!!
The 15 days was just ideal for me to resume work. But if you work from home, it’s possible depending on how your recovery is. You will definitely need help at home for the first 10days.
I opted for open myo because I had 18 fib in all ranging from 2 to 8 cm and a cyst. And I would like to have kids someday.

Day 3?? would be too soon, why not 7 days to give your incision time to dry up to some extent. This depense on your body. Again I was lucky I didn’t feel pains, that I couldn’t manage. Which also facilitate my early return to work.
You will need help to do some house chores .example, preparing food to eat, etc. Its advisable not to carry heavy objects nor over stress yourself.
Thank you again! I am so scared and depressed. So many doctors say if you’re in your 40s they don’t care about saving your uterus or organs. I could have gotten a robotic myomectomy when it was 8cm about a year go but than thanks to stupid perimenopause hormones it started growing faster and now is around 11ish and the doc said open would be easier for her. But SO much more downtime for me. And I don’t want to lose any organs. I’m 47 and feel like my health is going to hell because of hormones while a man my age has years left of health and to have kids. 
Sorry for what you are going through. You don’t have to be so scared about the surgery. It’s not that difficult. Saying from experience. I was terrified, I even had to rescheduled mine twice before I summon courage to have it done. But afterwards, I ask myself why I had to wait this long.

Hello, I had an open myo in dec and I’m a teacher in CA so I did not return to work until after the 6 week window. If you work from home, I would say you may be able to resume but you want to give your body some time to heal because your body is going to go through a major change with the removal. It’s the day to day things that you’ll need help with.
Hi, thanks for your reply! What do you mean by day to day? Like driving? Or do you mean I wouldn’t be able to do simple things like getting up and grabbing a snack, or letting my dog out into the yard?
Yes all of that. I have a labrador and a GSD so bending over to feed them or walking along side them to open the door was very tiring. Learning that my body had limitations was hard because I wanted to still do the same things I did before surgery.
Thanks I get it. But it sounds like you could do it, it was just exhausting? I don’t have a husband or helpful family so I would be on my own.
have you asked your insurance about having a nurse stop by Daily or having a nurse come by for the first week or so? Just a thought. I’m also single, I live alone, and I’m looking into that option myself.
Hi I live in the US so doubt insurance would cover something like that. Also I can’t afford to be on disability or out of FT work for more than about a week. So I would need to work. I’m still trying to see if there’s any way my doctor could do laproscopic or robotic but she says it would take a lot longer and is worried about how long I’d be under anesthesia. I also think she just may find open surgery easier for her. She also thought Lupron wasn’t a good idea. Thanks.
