Update one week till pre op

hi all
still here
here is the findings from my meeting with the consultant please remember the x ray he is referring too was taken Feb 28th 2019 as always any comments/ advice welcome

thanks
Billy

First of all, I wish you a speedy recovery. I had my left hip replaced on June 3, 2019 and according to my doctor am doing fine. I too am overweight and walked with a waddle which my daughters kindly said was a penguin walk. I had little to no pain after surgery, mostly muscle pain due to using muscles that weren’t used for quite a while. Physical therapy kicked my butt again due to those muscles. I can now walk with no assistance, but I do use my cane if I am walking outside for a little more stability. My best advice is follow your doctors instructions and don’t try to rush things. We all heal at a different pace.

My right hip was worse than the left one too, with total loss of joint space and very little flexibility. I hope you can get your op done OK, have you still got the pre op booked?

hi Billy. gt news re :pre OP date. are they doing both sides at the same time ?? my R was severe arthritis and described by the surgeon post OP as completely useless lol. I thought I could ve told him that!
they prob wont re xray .I had mine done in jan 2019 and had OP in may. even tho I’m sure if they re xrayed theyd have seen how much worse it’s got it didn’t matter as the rubbish bit was coming out anyway and I’d imagine they know by looking at bones which bit is good and which isn’t.
but anyway you’re nearer the door so to speak
as for being over weight my BMI was high but they still put me on their advanced recovery programme . didn’t get told to loose weight altho I did off my own back.
keep us updated

hi. yes pre op Thursday 25th July

thanks, been a big decline in my left hip since i saw him . i am going to ask if he is willing to do both at the same time, i hope he says yes.

Great not long to wait. Roll on next week.

you’re very brave to even think of having both done at same time altho I can understand why. itll be great to have your OP either way

Thanks Julie1717 to be honest after my prognosis from the consultant in Glasgow which for some unknown reason was"Death" or " I would be no better than I am now "
I am actually on edge when I went to Glasgow with no worries ready to just get it done but that guy really put doubt in my mind. The consultant in Aberdeen was much better but I always have this doubt and fear in the back of my mind.
LOL so brave no but I do know what has to be done

you’ll feel so much better once its sorted tho Billy. glad you’ve found a decent surgeon who’s not as self opinionated as the first one !

Does anyone know how long after the pre op assessment will I be before surgery , I have heard it can be anything from a couple of weeks to a few months It does say on the letter that no date will be given at the assessment
Will give you all an update on Thursday after the pre assessment
cheers

Hi Billy, think it can be as long as twelve weeks but no longer as they would have to re-do the pre op and that’s just another waste of money! I was lucky, op date came through same week as pre-op, so I had a wait of 9 days. Gulp!

I hope thats all I have to wait I think 12 weeks would make me go crazy

I know at my pre OP( on the monday ) theyd not planned to tell us the date but at the following friday at their enhanced recovery afternoon. seemed very odd to me tbh.
anyway when my consultant sec rang me up to tell me the pre OP date as they were kate sending out the letter I asked her lol. and she told me. I think she shouldn’t have done as the consultant mentioned it at the pre op lol. but working in the nhs since 1977 I know theyll know this lol .
anyway good luck hope it’s not long but agree and at one time I did a pre clearing job as a nurse specialist so I know they only have a short ish window for the blood tests etc to be valid otherwise the whole assessment has to be re done.

Thank you Julie1717

I had to wait two months and was not told an op date at the time of the pre op. I was given the option for having an op at the last minute though if there were a cancellation. In my case there wasn’t though.

I am on the cancellation list but apparently have to have the pre op first.
so i have given my self a time limit and if there is no forward movement I think i will just stick with the pills and forget surgery for a while.

billy. please dont do that you’ve gone thro so much to get this far. of course it’s up to you but it wont be long before you’re feeling so much better. keep positive . we all get wound down by having yo wait so we know how you feel atm

I know but when I realised that I first reported hip trauma to my doctor in 1984 and was told to wait until I was 50 , it seems like a load of crap to put through all this. And to think that was 35 years ago lol so I dont have that long left to live so i have been through the worst of it

yes but whatever life time you have left should be the best it can be. I know where you’re coming from I’d been telling my daughters fir at least the last 2 yrs I was having no OP as the new hip dont always last more than 15 yrs or so. but suddenly when I couldn’t walk at all without a crutch and became house bound I knew I wanted a better life than what I was getting even if it’s only a short time in comparison to before. trouble is if you get yourself off the waiting list again theyll be reluctant to put you back on. plus these days many older people successfully having first / 2nd ops into old age.
but the decision is yours
